[STEAM] Winter is coming. So start saving, because a PA'er always pays his debts
So for those of you who didn't read the full rules and got pre-emptively disappointed like me.
Apparently they choose winners between July 12th and August 1st.
I knew there was a delay!
Probably to do research on the initial winners and make sure they weren't using SAM. Basing the winners off achievements when the system is quite easily exploited I thought was a weird move on their part, but at least by taking their time, it sounds like they are doing their due diligence.
I believe that's easy enough for them to do. The delay is more likely due to the law requiring them to take no purchase mail in entries and accommodating the delivery delay.
I've never understood this about any contest or sweepstakes. Why must all companies adhere to such a ridiculous rule? No purchase necessary? It doesn't even make sense.
Its like, I buy a bottle of Dr. Pepper, and there's a code on the bottle cap. No bottle cap, no code. Its pretty simple logic. Why should I have the option of mailing in to Dr. Pepper (or in this case Valve) and requesting a game token for free, when it is not free for them to give away the prize.
I mean, prize money doesn't just materialize out of thin air. Prize money comes from sales and general business success. No sales means no money. No money means no extra cash to throw around as prize money.
Now obviously in the case of the Steam sale, its very possible that much of it is donated through advertising and Valve themselves won't be out anything from their own pockets. But somebody somewhere will be out some money, and that's the part I don't understand. Why is Joe Schmoe allowed to enter a contest like this without actually participating in the game?
It has to do with certain laws in certain countries. Some countries (like Canada) make it so you have to be able to enter a contest without purchasing the product. I don't exactly know the reason why, but there it is. It is Valve basically covering their ass.
Because these countries have laws against gambling. Spending money to enter a contest is gambling. Therefore, for it to be legal, the spending part has to be optional. There are loopholes to let local raffles and things get around this, but national and international contests have to follow the rules.
I wonder if Valve could have argued that the "use a feature of Steam" challenges are enough to get around the "no purchase necessary" clause? I mean, Steam is free...there are free games on Steam, so that should allow someone to generate 10 entries without buying anything. Of course, I am not a lawyer, etc.
Possibly, but I don't see why they'd want to risk litigation when adding the no purchase necessary language is so easy.

Hell, over at CAG they'll probably laugh you off the board if you didn't take advantage of the mistaken pricing on Retribution and Terraria.
Personally I like that...one game that people bought not thinking it would come back CHEAPER, and another game that people thought they could buy later, but then the price WENT UP.
It's that age old paradox: "You're damned if you do, and you damned if you don't."

What mistaken pricing on Retribution? I did at some point see it briefly as 75% off, but if was back to 50% off as soon as I had clicked on it.
I know my backlog is tiny compared to everyone else, but does anyone else feel like their Steam account is like an episode of Hoarders? People look at your games and say "So why did you buy this item?" and the only response I can give is "Well, I just looked at the sales, and then compulsively bought a bunch of stuff, knowing I would never have time to play 10% of it."
I remember coming back from being out somewhere one afternoon, and seeing my friend had sent me an instant message on AIM that just said "you have the fucking weirdest Steam library"
Having some touchiness in the jumps in Super Meat Boy. Probably just the fact that I'm using Xpadder on a PS3 controller, but anyone else experience this or find a fix?
I'm having a similar experience with a wireless 360 controller. The controls just seem to be overly sensitive.
Been playing Dawn of War II's campaign. It is amazing and is everything I've ever wanted out of an RTS. So glad I decided to get the THQ pack.
What's the deal with The Last Standalone? I know what it is, but does it have any unique content that I won't get from owning the three DoW2 games? And can people with Last Standalone play with DoW2 owners?
Tempted to buy that new Magic duel game for some reason.
I think the week has just gotten me hooked on buying shit.
Did you play/find any enjoyment from the first Duels game?
Because this one is basically the same thing, except a little better because you can remove cards from decks as well as add new cards, so you don't end up with some 80 card monstrosity if you want to use the cards you unlock.
I never played the first, but I was a big Magic player about seven years ago.

You should just play Magic Online and mortgage your house to pay for your addiction. :P

Dawn of War II's campaign is so good, so good.
And the Last Standalone is just the Last Stand game mode from Retribution, chopped out of the rest of the game and sold individually because it was so popular. If you own Retribution, you own everything in the Last Standalone already.
Planeswalkers is fantastic if like myself you don't really want to get into deckbuilding and the deeper aspects of the hobby as a whole, but still want a most of the intricacies of the actual game.
Also I love a game where you can have less than 5 life and your opponent nearly 30 and still come back to win.

Ugh, CAG is fantastic as a news reader for video game deals, but not much else lately.

This post makes me want to rename my "do not want" category to "hoarding: buried alive."

Their forum community is truly crazy sometimes. But when you're built around cheapness, I guess that's what you get.

Right?
Seriously though, I can't imagine how screwed I would be in the analog era. I love buying cheap things and collecting in general. If all this was in my house, I'd be doomed!
Summer camp is over. You've said good bye to all your new friends. All your crafts and trinkets are packed up and the bus is taking you back to civilization. But before you get back to "normal" life, there is one final camp activity:
The Sayonara Summer Camp Scavenger Hunt
A multi-part, semi-PA & Steam related challenge consisting of puzzles and riddles.
I tried to keep the difficulty hard without passing into 90's-adventure-game-unsolvable-without-a-faq hard.
The prize pack consisting of:
PA Adventures Eps 1 & 2
3-pack of Sanctum (So you can gift-it-forward) Just Cause 2
Via Classy Gent Blackbird SR-71C Just Cause 2 DLC
Via Classy Gent Nathrak Trine
Overlord Complete Pack
Via Classy Gent Forar Plants vs Zombies.
Teams are allowed, but I will only be passing the prize pack one person. It's up to you to divvy it up.
So I installed that Vampire fan patch and set a custom resolution of 1920x1080. So far so good.
Being the graphics whore I am, though, I just wanted to check if there were additional values I could configure to spruce up the visuals. There's a VPKTool that has a Texture Tools tab that lists terms like Trilinear and Anisotropic under "Header Information". Will checking these apply improvements.
Also read talk about editing the FOV, although that's not something I do often, so I don't know if it would be beneficial or just an aesthetic choice.
Lastly, none of the movies before the main menu display for me, it's just sound. Any way to have these play, or at least remove them?

You figured out the first one, and he PMed you the second one? I'm not clear on how this is working.
No, it's self-contained.
And annoying.
(Ahem.)
My main problem is that every password I try has to be brute-forced with every possible combination of Upper and Lowercase letters. If it's a compound password (multiple words), I also have to try it separated with punctuation, spaces, etc. This makes it a huge chore to try out any idea that doesn't work immediately (and none of them have worked).
EDIT: Really, if tomorrow's clue tells you some way to limit the variables on the password (it's only one word, or it's all lower case, etc.), I would be quite happy to continue. Right now, though, it's just grind work.

Just got a whole bunch of review codes for CSTW & BoDVII.
If you're a reviewer at a website who would like to cover the game, send me a PM or email me at rdespair at gmail dot com, and I'll hook you up. If you're not a reviewer, but would still like a copy, I'll be posting a few codes in the Steam thread later today, so stay tuned.

1: Zombie Driver
2: Plain Sight
3: X-Com: UFO Defense
4: System Protocol one (NOOOO)
5: King's Bounty: Crossworlds
I am very happy that my first three thoughts didn't work at all. This is going to be so much fun.
Games: Ad Astra Per Phalla | Choose Your Own Phalla
sorry, I was a little worried about that part, and I should have given an easy clue.
Per my contest post, I will give a better clue tomorrow at 10am PST. Take heart, that is by far the toughest part of the challenge.
Steam ID: Good Life
You figured out the first one, and he PMed you the second one? I'm not clear on how this is working.
All the clues lead to other clues.
Until the final clue.

No.
This is making my head hurt trying to figure out.
BUT I WANT TO SO BAD.
Not really for the prizes. Just because.

Also since someone else appears to have my user name with a lower case e instead of my capitol E, that won't work either!
Fuck.

I mean I figured out some of it, but I have no idea where I am going.
