Ancient "interactive game" from the 90s?

Back in 1996 or 1997 there was an attempt to start a sort of proto-ARG type game where you signedup and then began receiving cryptic emails and text messages, phone calls at odd hours with messages relating to a suspicious conspiracy. As the game progressed you would be led to websites that may or may not have had any relationship, found strange clues, supposedly needed to "hack" into restricted areas, all in an attempt to figure out what illuminati shadow government thing was going on... And what the character motivations were, or something...

I believe it stopped being run before the game could finish. Does anyone remember this? I believe I initially got involved from an ad in PC Gamer.

Anyone? I'm now having candle cove weirdness going on in my head. it's dark and I'm kinda... Yeah.

Seriously, anyone remember this?

Possibly Majestic? It's from 2001, but according to sources I very lazily looked up on Google it is supposedly the first ARG-type game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majestic_(video_game)

And then there was Missing, but that came out in like 2004.

I don't remember anything like that in the mid-to-late 90s.
