Friend Gave Me His IPod Touch- [RESOLVED]

So, a buddy of mine just got an iPhone and no longer needed his 2nd gen iPod Touch. He gave it to me, but with all of his stuff still on it. It's neat to have access to his music and videos, but I'm not sure how I go about associating my own AppleID with it to truly make this thing my own (i.e, the apple store still thinks it's him using this iPod and wants his login credentials, etc.).

I'm sure I can learn this from Apple's tech support, but as nice as they are, I'd rather not spend a few hours waiting on hold with them if I can avoid it.

So what are your thoughts, H/A? If "You're going to have to call Apple Customer Care" is the answer, so be it, but if you can save me that effort, I would be extremely appreciative!

Will a factory reset do what you want? The only problem I see happening is that maybe your friend has to disassociate his stuff with the device.

You can switch accounts if you go to Settings > Store. I don't know if this effectively wipes all the apps and files that your friend already put on there, though, so maybe a factory reset, which you can do from iTunes, is the way to go.

A factory restore from iTunes would be the best way to do it. You'll lose any of his apps though.

If it's anything like an iPhone or iPad, go into System -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings / Erase All Content and Settings. Then, next time you plug it in you can assign it to yourself and your account. It takes it back to "out of the box" status.

I don't know know if you can make it "your own" and keep all his old content.

If you've set itunes to not auto sync, and do what kpc said, you can simply add to whats there from your account. If you ever do a complete sync to your itunes, you'll lose it all though. I'm not sure what his stuff purchased from iTunes will do though, probably not work.

Thanks very much everyone. I just went ahead and reset it, according to suggestions, and that worked just fine. H/A succeeds again!
