'Struth. I'm all for the kind of aweomely game-y tropical setting that Far Cry the First did (the fact that I'm living in Southwest Florida isn't a contributing factor, I swear), only given the polished, surreally beautiful look that Far Cry 2's savannahs and underbrush had. Giving me free reign to to what I want in that enviornment comes first though.
I have a lot of complaints about FC 2 (namely the plot and choices that didn't mean jack, because some dev thought it was 'artistic' or some bullshit; it wasn't) but overall I liked a lot of things about the game and the things that made it okay/good and not great were basically deliberate decisions on the part of developers that had some weird ideas and must've really HATED Africa. So I think if they learn from their mistakes and keelhaul that one dev who thinks pointless player decisions make an artistic statement, FC 3 could be great.
Also, sign me up for the jeepus rammus being stupid list. Driving along, and suddenly a jeep appears on the horizon gunning to ram you, or on your bumper shoving you forward. Never another tactic, roadblock, attempt to follow nearby and gun at you, it's just RAMMING SPEED all the time when it comes to enemy vehicles.

Yeah, a combination of these two (if they pick the good bits) is not something I'd be unhappy with. The first one was great up until the game stripped away all the really good stuff for lame run-and-gun mutant gameplay. The second had some good ideas shackled to some atrociously awful ones. As in so bad that the make the game not worth the effort.
Open wilderness stuff? Neato! Oh wait, I have to drive everywhere. EVERYWHERE. And there are enemy checkpoints every fifty yards. And they respawn so fast that you can still be fighting the first group when the second one spawns. And if you run, they chase you and can rubberband cheat to catch up. And if they break your vehicle (which they will), you have to get out, fight them, then fix the car. And if you decide to drive around them, the terrain still breaks your vehicle and you still have to fix it. Need to heal? Have fun digging crap out in the middle of a fight. Actually having fun? Enjoy the disease effects as you try to pull out your pills, also in the middle of a fight.
I really can't think of another game which tries so hard to just ruin anything which might be fun. And I played all the STALKER games, which, between mods and the stock games, are generally exercises in self-loathing between the golden moments.
But take the jungle setting and trap stuff from the first one, the big environments, neat realism, and lots of stuff to do in the second one, put it all together and you could make a pretty great game. Oh, and for the love of all things holy, a damned fast travel system which is actually useful. It doesn't need to take me everywhere from anywhere, but at least make it so I don't have to drive fifteen minutes to get to anything of interest, much less what it takes to get to where I need to be. Just Cause 2 has a ridiculously huge map and I could cross it in the same amount of time it would take to find a car, start it up, and get it wrecked in FC2.
I didn't mind the too much. Kept me on my feet! But they did botch the whole...EVERYBODY IN AFRICA WANTS TO KILL YOU thing. And they even had factions..
I agree with Ninja Snarl, I wanted to enjoy FC2 so bad but it just wouldn't let me. I would endure all the BS respawns and jeeps that suck ass, but once the sickness kicked in and I ran out of pills, I just put the game away forever. I should buy FC1 and see how that is, but i'm going to hold out until they make FC3, hopefully without the suck factor added into it.
I loves me some FC1. Played it so many times, though only twice to completion. Every other time I just go until I come up to the first mutant monkeys and then start over, because seriously, fuck those monkeys. Fighting bloodthirsty mercenaries in a tropical paradise never gets old, but by the second giant gun-toting monkey I just want to do something else again.
Though I do have fond memories of jamming the blast doors in the volcano open with a chair that I'd shot six hundred times to move it there from the armory, just so I'd have access to said armory after getting door-camped by four rocket monkeys.
Fuck rocket monkeys.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKERS

The best part is when they give you a mission to blow up a stash of Malaria medication and then not allow you to take any. It felt like I could almost hear the developers laughing at me. Even the plotline of the game seems to be an exercise in the developers being massive dicks and just abusing the player, and not in an atmospheric, fun way ala STALKER.
I've gotta say, there's a very deliberate move being done with the game's graphical presentation to make it look video-gamey. Like does anyone else see that?
I see what you mean. The shadows are too crisp, there's little to no blurring with distance, the colours are too pure and saturated with little to no mottling, etc. Seems too much like a concept painting at the moment, but all these issues can be smoothed out with a few tiny tweaks as time goes on.

I never liked Far Cry 1 - mostly owing to shitty AI, like the time I was crouched, walking slowly past a door in a hallway that I had literally just got done lighting up with a mounted machine gun when off to my right I suddenly hear a "DID YOU HEAR SOMETHING?!" and out come three guys who proceed to kill me to death.
Far Cry 2 had the absolute best environment I have ever played in any game. The game, though? Yeesh.
This game, though? This game looks tits hot. Hope it actually lives up to it.
Yeah...play FC2 til you open up all the weapons and all the storage boxes for your safehouse...Than just relax and search the jungles for diamonds...Or just destroy jeeps and fight checkpoints. Played as a sandbox game and ignoring the missions is the most enjoyable way.
I saw that it got pushed back until the end of the year.
I was really disappointed. I was getting ready to cancel some pre-orders just so that I'd have time to play this. I absolutely LOVED Far Cry 2, barring that game breaking bug I hit...

If I am a mercenary going to Africa I am getting my shots, but this somehow escapes the PC and the PC only.
Perfectly valid criticisms of the game aside, I just wanted to point out that there is currently no such thing as a malaria vaccine. When you travel to a malarial region, you bring your pills, which act as both a treatment and a limited prophylaxis. I like to pretend the PC left his in his other pants.
I really dug the Heart of Darkness vibe and especially the weapon firing sounds in Far Cry 2, but the driving everywhere ruined it for me. Then, when I finally went back to finish it at about 80%, the npc for the next mission was gone, and after googling it, seems I'm SOL.
I'm surprised I haven't posted in this thread already, but like a lot of you guys as well as the reviewers at RPS, I have this mad, weird passion for Far Cry 2. It was so wildly innovative and also spectacularly awful in other areas. When all is said and done, I probably put 60-70 hours into my single play-through, although I got so frustrated with all of its problems (design as well as technical) that I shelved the game for about a year before speeding through the endgame.
Having watched those trailers the moment they popped onto the web during E3, I am beyond excited for the third game. It's one of my gaming franchise holy grails, and I'm glad to be getting almost all of them this year (See also in descending order: Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, Darksiders 2. The only one missing is Fallout 4). Just from those traily bits alone, there seems to be a bigger focus on the role playing elements as well as the story, so I'm excited to learn more about what's going on with this. If it still somehow manages to get a spring or summer release, I will be very surprised.
I still need to finish Darksiders - my steam library is simply...too huge ^o^
Yea it does feel like they're focusing a bit more on the story in FC3 and listening to a lot of the criticism from FC2 (the lead designer doesn't work at ubi anymore). We'll see what happens but I'm hoping it'll still bring a lot of the good from FC2 into 3. Hoping anyway.
There is a ComDev on the project already, but the team is laying low at the moment, focusing on finishing the game. The silence in recent months is very much intentional. Expect him to appear with new information on Far Cry 3 soon enough though. Once the silence breaks we're going to have quite a bit to say!
found that on the forums by an Ubisoft UK Community Manager.

Looking forward to 3.
The funny thing is that driving everywhere was one of my favorite parts. I especially loved the mechanic where you could pull your map out while driving and had to alternate looking at it and looking at the road.
AI is intense in that regard. I still have hopes of just driving past and ignoring certain guardposts but they'll track you down. Long distances too =(
Someone has made the first single player mod. It adjusts the costs of upgrades/weapons, increases stealth armor so it's useful, and increases weapon damage (plus others). Kind of cool IMO. But still get frustrated watching those dumb guys in tee shirts take 3-4 bullets to go down for good...Especially when STALKER and BF3/BC2 HC where you have people in BODY ARMOR go down in less -.o
I got the files. Thanks so much. This mod is great. You fixed everything that needed fixing. Before using your mod - I used to drive through a hot area and enemy would all start shooting at my vehicle and my vehicle would instantly take damage and stall and I would have to get out and fight - often getting killed instantly. But after installing your mod - the vehicle upgrades allow me to drive through hot areas and take a lot of enemy fire and my vehicle does not take heavy damage instantly and stall, instead I am able to keep driving and have fun while enemy chase me in their vehicles. Now I drive straight through several hot areas without ever having to get out and fight, which saves a lot of time when I need to drive someplace far away and I don't feel like stopping every 30 seconds to get out and fight annoying enemy and then repair my vehicle. This game is so much more fun now. All the other tweaks you made are great too. Thanks again. 2 thumbs up!
I don't know what difficulty he's playing on, but on infamous the AI doesn't behave that way for me. Like I said they chase me down and don't give up until one of us is dead. I'll post on IMDB and ask him, hopefully he'll get it and reply.
Now I wish I had the PC version of FC2. Mod support always makes everything better. I'm still hoping Ubi Montreal can pull off FC3 with that perfect mix of open-ended strategy and gameplay to back it up. Having everything come full circle with a Far Cry game that outdoes what Crytek originally did would be fantastic.

I take back what I said. I like Far Cry 2 a lot. You know what would've been awesome? Africa co-op.
Far Cry 3's E3 demo looked like a game I would sink a lot of time into

It's annoying that Far Cry 2 doesn't have sound options for PC. I have a nice headset, but if I put it on Stereo, 7.2 surround sound, quadrophone, anything, I can't hear my cellphone, when I look directly at people I can barely hear them.
I bought FC2 for $2 in a steam sale, and I always found it annoying because it would default to 800x600 whenever I alt-tabbed. Without the option to change it back easily. Other things were annoying as well. I never really got through it.

Despite loving it, I agree it's a diamond in the rough.
If you can get past the occasional game ending bug and stealth not working in the second half of the game, it's wonderful.
If you get stuck on respawning checkpoints, crazed Jeep drivers, and rusting weapons then it's terrible. But since I actually LIKED all of those mechanics...

Farcry 1 was a huge disappointment for me. Such a good start then just, blechh. FC 2 is a better game in spite of its flaws as far as I'm concerned.
