I'm pretty well versed in the game so I am happy to answer questions but no I cannot explain how to play I am an awful teacher. My advice is to learn through a couple practice games. Which again I am happy to oblige with when I have time.

You have two monsters of the same level but one isn't a tuner? Or maybe it is and you just don't have synchro that you want to use at the moment?

By stacking those monsters on top of each other you can special summon an XYZ monster from your extra deck( as long as it's rank and material requirements match up to the monsters)
So you have let's say you have two level three monsters You can summon a RANK three Xyz from the Extra deck.
Yeah Xyz don't have levels. They're purposely designed not to work with most game mechanics to prevent abuse.
Now those two monster used go underneath the Xyz monster and are no longer considered monsters but a sort of token called an XYZ material.
Generally you can detach one of these as an effect cost for the Xyz monster. So for the most part the effect is balanced by how many materials the monster needs to be summoned. Better effects require more monsters .
( for example No.39 Terrorbyte has a built in mind control and as such requires three monsters to be summoned. he also has 0 attack but 2900 defense making him worthless for OTKs)
Xyz like a champ.

I kinda wanna make a black magician deck but in the duel place i dunno how I decide what my deck is supposed to fall under (besides not playing any rated games)

I think that's part of it but also they have really strong synchro monsters that are easy to summon.
Also they unbanned Dark Hole it is like they want me to only ever play crystal beasts and fortune ladies ever.
Does anyone how Synchro Monsters fare these days? I'm curious to know if they can put up a good fight against Xyz Monsters.

They're also sort of about swarming, but they're not nearly as good at it as Blackwings, which makes it kinda sorta really annoying to go up against Blackwing decks.

Blackwings should run their Synchros excluding Silver wind the isolated Dark end dragon and whatever else you see fit.

Lost to Lightsworn everytime.
In retrospect Double Judgement Dragon on Turn two every time was probably a clue dudes were cheating. I have since become more proactive at tournaments regarding calling judges

Pick a Theme.
Themes are very prevalent in this game. Mainly so new players can build a deck with some consistency.
It helps trust me. Gladiator beasts and Gravekeepers are good starter themes. I'll post a link to the Wiki for complete card lists as some theme cards don't share a name.
Get a Monster Spell Trap ratio you like and stick with it
I prefer 20/15/5 plenty of room to modify as the format dictates.
Try not to go over 40 cards. Rarely if ever will you see a deck with more than 40 cards. You actually put yourself at a disadvantage
Really know what your deck is capable of. You should be able to draw any hand and have at least 2 posssible plays. Missing an option will come back and bite you on the ass.

Also not sure there's any interest but I made #cardgames on slashnet since the game client doesn't necessarily seem good for idling or communicating with idlers or communicating in general. It would just be good for random game inquiries for me since I'm usually on IRC anyway.

This is basicall why I made the thread lol. I unfortunately made it when I agreed to an absurd amount of overtime though so I won't be able to play for a week. It helps that people will try to get you banned for anything. They've added an appeals system though which is thankfully curbing that but it still happens.
Yeah the in game chat is mainly for declaring chains and saying good game.
It's got more older players now than younger ones. At best it's an even split. Play it CD. Join usssss.
