This is a renegade cop.
But this is a thread about Renegade Ops.
What's Renegade Ops?
Here's a teaser trailer, it should explain(?).
In case you don't really feel like that trailer explained much (which is an entirely reasonable way to feel): In brief, Renegade Ops is an arcade-style, top-down, twin-stick vehicle-based shooter.* It's published by Sega, and developed by Avalanche Studios, a smaller cadre of some of the same people who worked on Just Cause 2. Also, apparently it features some sort-of cheesy-looking, frowny-faced, cross-eyed, comic book-looking guys, and also some silhouettes.** Not that you really care about that.
Here, care about some gameplay video instead:
As has probably become abundantly clear by this point, these guys really have a fetish for things exploding in lush tropical environments. (The studio actually got started as a sort of support group, I hear.) And they hope you do too. Hell, they
know you do too.*** This time, though, they've taken a fundamentally different approach, creating a lighter game without Just Cause 2's emphasis on robust character development and an involving storyline. Renegade Ops is, in spirit, a lot like classic top-down/isometric racers and shoot-em-ups**** from the 8- and 16-bit days, such as Jackal, Jungle Strike, and Micro Machines.
What do you do in Renegade Ops?
Well, fundamentally, you drive around. There are four different characters/vehicles to pick from, and you drive around in one, you see. And then you blow stuff up. Each character/vehicle drives differently and more importantly has different ways to blow stuff up. Which is good, because there's a purpose to all of this, you have to defeat this guy named Inferno. (I bet he just
might be one of the frowny comic guys in that trailer!) Because he's bad, you see. And you defeat him by blowing stuff up. There are nine levels to drive through, each with stuff you're supposed to blow up to progress. Sometimes there are varied side objectives to make things interesting, like rescuing menaced villagers, which you're probably gonna have to get done by blowing some stuff up.
Screenshots of driving and blowing things up:
Things blow up in this game.
In this game? Sometimes? Things blow up.
Who do you do it with?
Who I do it with is none of your business. Oh, you mean in the game! Well, you do it with your friends, of course! Renegade Ops offers the choice of intimate split-screen mayhem for two, or (if you're somewhat more cosmopolitan in your proclivities), online shared destruction for four. The multiplayer modes are competitive co-op, which means that even as you try to beat your partners by blowing more stuff up, you also have to keep in mind the larger, shared goal, which is that you're all blowing that Inferno guy's stuff up.
Here, have a multiplayer trailer.
Screenshots of split-screen co-op:
Please note that although nothing is actually blowing up in either of these screenshots, please rest assured that this is an anomaly, and that I am led to believe things blow up on a fairly regular basis in all game modes, both single-player and multiplayer.
When do I get to do it, and where?
Renegade Ops has been available on XBox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network since the middle of September. After a number of delays, false starts, and psych-outs, the game is also
finally available for PC on Steam and Direct2Drive.
How much does it cost to do it?
A single copy of the game on any of the three platforms can be had for $15. The PC version is also available from Steam in a four-pack for $29.99, which I have been led to believe by those proficient in the math breaks down to a
significant discount for copy, so if you're planning on playing on the PC, trying to assemble a group to buy a four-pack is the way to go, and then you'll have ready-made friends to play with. Together you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll learn important lessons about life and about each other. You may even blow some stuff up.
*Hyphens!
**Alright, no more hyphens now.
***You perverted fucks.
****Damn it!

Says it's out now but it's still not released on Steam. This is gonna be awesome! So much action, so many explosions...
My Backloggery
I am. The game looks decent and the 4-pack price is low.
I want to know more PA people on Twitter.
Downloaded the demo to check it out and there were no reboots on exiting. There was a patch that was downloaded and applied immediately from the start, maybe they fixed that quickly.
Opinion... intuitive is the best description for the learning curve. You're stepped through controls without having to browse the control menu and the game itself is quick to grasp.
Podcast WHORING: Episodes 2-8 (Thanks Zonghui)
Also, they did a new quick look the other day and it shows off the 4-player online mode.
My Backloggery
Oh man that 4-player online bit looks so good! Really glad I went into that Steam 4-pack earlier so I hope to give it a try
Definitely plan to pick this up later.
I can make the buy and you guys can PayPal me the cash if that's acceptable to everyone.
Also, I was watching the credits and spotted a name that looked familiar, and after a bit of research I realized it was an old friend of mine from my IRC days 10+ years ago. So that was cool. Looks like he's been with Avalanche for a few years, so he undoubtedly had a hand in Just Cause 2 somewhere.
My Backloggery
Yes and he has antlions.
He gets Antlions? That's cool I guess, some sort of gravity gun thing woulda been cooler. Super jelly I don't get Gordon though, maybe DLC... fingers crossed!
My engine is revved.
edit: Holy smokes its 10 gigs! May uhh, may want to add some hours to that
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
It's on the min specs for Steam
