But let's just go with the sign of "lazy assed port":
Renegade Ops: Press Start!
The PC version of Batman Arkham Asylum has a "Press Start" screen too. Guess it's just a "lazy assed port!"
FYI, pretty much all titles released for the XBox have one of those screens because Microsoft used to require it for primary controller detection.
Can you click menus in Batman: AA? Because that's sign two of "did you bother putting any form of mouse recognition in your goddamned pc port". See DX:HR for "not a lazy port"
So you're abandoning the argument that a "Press Start" screen automatically signifies a bad console port after you saw how silly it was? 'K.
I agree that non-clickable menus are a black mark against the game. However, I've also played PC versions of AAA (or at least AA) titles, priced accordingly, from major publishers, that also lacked them, and had far fewer PC-specific options than Renegade Ops does. So I'm not going to rip an arcade title from a relatively small developer which I payed $15 for a new one over something like this. They clearly made an effort on the port, a rather uneven one I grant, but I've seen much worse from developers which should do much better.
I went into this expecting Renegade Ops to basically be a quickie port and expecting the 360 pad to be the preferred control scheme and overall the game so far has met or somewhat exceeded my expectations.
No, I'm saying Batman:AC has some lazy fucking port habits, too. I haven't played it on the PC because Batman: AA's demo on the PC just crashes right off with a library error that's been around since 2009 with "the devs are looking into it!", so I'm asking does it have yet another one that Renegade Ops has: complete ignorance that you have a mouse in the menus. They took extra weeks on the port, and this is the state it's still in. It's also randomly going windowed mode on me, and moving said window around, but I'll chalk that up to "AMD still can't write a driver to save their lives"
I don't think "Tank Controls On/Off" was that indecipherable as far as being a control scheme.
I'm sorry, but are the tank controls labeled somewhere?
Because if I put something that says "Squid controls: Yes/No", chances are you have no idea what that means when the control scheme for Squid isn't listed anywhere nearby, and you've yet to play a squid.
Also, for laughs: when flying as a helicopter, tank controls are disabled again, because the setting only works for car mode.
But anywho, I'll step out since clearly I'm in the wrong for assuming that in your two extra weeks of port time you couldn't think "hey guys, are we just assuming everyone thinks their computer is just an xbox with an upgradable video card?"
Go back to playing SSFIV with a keyboard then, as obviously every PC game ever should be purely kbam and any attempts to adapt are flawed and horrible things.
Since when did PC gaming change from fitting the machine to the situation, to treating the kbam as a controller and pretending there is no other way to play games?

Weird how that roles reversed over the years.

I tried to play the first level without tank controls with kbam and fell off a cliff and died like 3 times. Finally failed the mission due to the controls and decided to see what "tank" was. Blew through the next 3 stages no problem.
Seems like a fun game, need to try co-op. The armored guys special is kinda awful. You can't fire while the shield is up, and it doesn't really last long enough to do much since it seems to get depleted from getting hit and from just having it on. I tried to use it when I had about 30 seconds left in a mission to get to a location. It wore out just as I was about to cross the line, and then I exploded. It helpfully spawned me 20 seconds away from the last objective, which I did almost manage to make it to again, until the same thing happened.
Also I can't tell what his final upgrade is for the middle tree, but it seems useless with the rocket launcher. The regening ammo isn't bad, but not very fast, it's like one a minute.
Also if you really want something to complain about with this game, it's the fact I have to disable steam overlay, AND use a hack by some other consumer just to get the game to launch on my pc. That is fucking ridiculous considering they have already delayed it twice at the final second.

No, the idea is that the PC allows you the versatility of using whatever input device. If KBAM doesn't work well because of poor design -- which is a big deal since that is the default standard every PC has -- then that takes away from that ideal. I don't know how you can espouse the versatility of the PC and then deride people who complain that the non-keyboard controls are shit and are unplayable. It's not a choice if you have to use a gamepad.
(And fighting games, SPD motions aside, actually play pretty damned good with a keyboard, better than the 360 controller at any rate.)
I got the bug where the game wouldn't start and I'm using Win 7 x64 with an i5 2500k. The fix is to restart steam and Renegade Ops downloaded another 78.6 MB.
Now it works and I'm rocking out with Gordon Freeman. And I need multiplayer buds! My only friend with this game right now is Gaslight

Your thumbs may be broken if the 360 pad or analog is worse for you than kbam in a fighting game, but hey maybe if you practice enough it'd work better?
Still, going by your logic, all RTS are shit because they arent playable with a controller or joystick... Oh wait, no, they have a default control scheme in mind. It's called a twin stick shooter because it implies two sticks. Which regardless, kbam never emulates well. Even the games I really enjoy like Steel Storm are better with a 360 controller. Thats just how the games play. I know, shocking. The shock will soon wear off though.
I, on the other hand, will now go into the Starcraft 2 thread and complain about how I cant use my logitech controller or flight stick to play, because the game is so badly designed.

It's a game released on the pc. If it controls like shit with a kb&m then it deserves to called on it.
YAY opinions! its like writing a review for a flight simulator. Without using a full joystick setup. Then saying it stinks.
Its not that it won't work, it just won't work as well. Same goes for this game. It was designed primarily with pad in mind.

Could I play this alright on KBAM? My Gamepad appears to hate me at the moment.
The game was patched today and it seems to have fixed the dual core problem. Now I just get horrible stuttering every few seconds in the menus and every few minutes in the actual game. Ugh.
There is a sort of steep difficulty curve to the last level.
It's probably not impossible, but it is fucking hard. I tried it co-op and single player, and I got to the last boss each time, but without the resources needed to beat him and his army of helicopter motherfuckers.

What. You know theres actual Fightsticks called "The Hitbox" that replicates up/down/left/right being on 4 face buttons right. It gives you more options for control because it can be faster and more precise to hit the direct keys you need instead of sliding from one position to another. CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Played up to mission 7 tonight with Redlance and its a great game. So many awesome scripted moments but its the random stuff you end up doing that sells it the most for me. Like I flipped of the boxes laying next to the edge of a ravine and somehow barrel-rolled right onto the bridge running across it. And then there was last night when Redlance drove into me and then ramped right off into the air.
Also, I got another game it can be compared to; Desert Strike. The chopper bits just remind of that game, isometric with great explosions. ALso also, The people behind the Expendables movies should get these guys to make their games because this could totally be Expendables: The Movie.
Yes there are and they're great. But you got an epic moment coming up involving a huge explosion. I'll say no more. Also next time I'm on, shot me a message for some coop, me and red need two more for even more chaos!

I wanna try finish the single player before delving into the co op, plus I'm playing Splinter Cell: Conviction co op at the minute but I bet this has to be great fun co op so gotta give it a go!

I find it hella difficult to understand what's going on on the screen with this game.
Suddenly a fight is over and my car is somewhere weird and I have no idea how it got there.
I can see how that could happen, I mean genuinely. If you're colour blind, you might not be able to see the little red arc that hovers around your car/buggy, it helps you keep check of the direction you're moving in.
Also, I did 3 missions singleplayer and then hopped into multi and it was amazing.

I have some difficulty picking up on colored objects when there things of a close color next to them.
Man, after beating the game with Diz, going back and trying Gunnar seems like double hard mode. That guy NEEDS upgrades to make his special not suck, because otherwise its slow deploy, slow turning speed, and inability to move make it pretty much useless for all the things you'd want to be hitting with heavy weaponry, like tanks and rockets. You have to stop behind them, deploy and fire, and then pack up and move in the interval between their attacks. Diz's upgrades, on the other hand, just make a good thing amazing.
Guess I'll go try leveling Roxy again or check Armand out; I don't know if it's just me but Gordon's jalopy seemed to flip over or get stuck in corners way more often than others and I was never sure how useful antlions were because I was paying attention to other things.
I guess I should try the multiplayer then? my wifes out at a halloween party so I'll be on for the next few hours, if anybody wants to play give me a shout on steam
That wad awesome you guys. Coop with Peewi and rikdaly. Completely finished game. Sorry you couldn't stay on Peewi, the ending was fantastic. Amazing punch line.
Game is fantastically cheesy and so much more fun for it.

I hate vague upgrades without knowing the real effect, so I timed out some stats. I thought you guys might find this useful for choosing upgrades as well. Numbers are approximate; typically the better version of an upgrade was twice as effective.
General:
The secondary ammo upgrade gives +1, the ammo++ gives +3, so together they give +4 (7 total rockets/railgun rounds). It doesn't seem like they affect the flamethrower -- it took the same amount of time to empty it regardless.
The ammo regen upgrade fills 1 round (or 1/6th tank for the flamer) every 20 seconds.
The ammo pickup boost means pickups offer 2 rounds instead of 1, or 1/3rd tank for the flamer instead of 1/6th (pickups only, doesn't affect ammo regen).
2.5s to charge railgun normally, 1.5s with upgrade.
Nitro extinguishes fire and brings you to max speed immediately or gives you a brief surge if you're already boosting. It has a 5s cooldown.
The health regen upgrade restores your HP up to a cap of a little less than a third, about 30%, healing ~3% every 2s and thus taking 20s to finish from nigh-death.
ARMAND
Armand's invulnerable shield doesn't need to be fully recharged and can be used partially, for as long as you hold the trigger down; the cooldown numbers are from fully depleted. Every time you trigger it, it has an initial cost chunk, then a constant drain, so quick uses of it aren't very efficient even if they're often the most useful since he can't attack with it up. With the ramplate upgrade, you can plow through buildings/towers without slowing down and destroy jeeps by ramming them, regardless if the shield is up or not. I didn't find the shield's health regen fast enough to be worth a slot, personally, but the deflection upgrade is awesome, especially with multiple rocket enemies: just park and throw the shield on right before impact to send them home, then release it and gun them down until the next volley. It even deflects mortars (although the shells don't return-to-sender), which means you can just plow through those barrages without slamming the emergency break.
Full duration: 4.5s
Full duration+: 7s
Cooldown: 50s
Cooldown+: 45s
Cooldown++: 40s
Max Cooldown: 35s
DIZ
Diz's EMP is great for stunning heavy hitters so you can focus on them without fear. With the upgrade that kills rockets in midair (and boosts EMP radius so you can hit near everything), you can get out of thorny situations with multiple rocket trucks pretty easily, and stunning a tank and then sitting on its backside and pounding the vulnerable point almost feels like cheating. I did the testing on hardcore, and the damage upgrades didn't seem worth it. It took both of them to be able to one-shot jeeps or 75% a tower, and while it does noticeable damage (maybe 40%?) to rockets, it's negligible on tanks. With just the larger one, it's about 66% damage to jeeps and half a tower. I wouldn't bother; your machine guns (especially upgraded to 3/3) do plenty of damage, and if you use the stun duration buff, that's just more time to finish off a tank/rocket or clean up minions. Maybe it does more damage on normal, but even then I'd rather have longer stun for the real dangers like tanks/rockets.
Stun: 5s
Stun+: 8s
Cooldown: 45s
Cooldown+: 42s
Cooldown++: 39s
Max Cooldown: 36s
ROXY
Roxy's airstrike does monstrous damage, but you pay for it with a massive cooldown. The aim upgrade is more useful than it might sound -- without it, you can drop your flares right next to a tank and have it come out virtually unscathed, but with it you can feel pretty secure that every thing in the zone is getting obliterated. The radius is pretty small by default, so you'll want the larger duration/radius boost. With both of them you'll fill the screen, but the larger one gives good coverage already so I think you can find a better use for a slot than using the smaller radius buff as well, like the instastrike/damage radius+ one which makes the airstrike a useful panic button for when something needs to be destroyed immediately.
Cooldown: 90s
Cooldown+: 84s
Cooldown++: 78s
Max Cooldown: 72s
GUNNAR
Gunnar sucks. Like Armand, his power only drains partially when you use it -- you can have it deployed without firing, but it won't recharge until you pack it up. Unlike Armand, he has the worst cooldown in the game, almost tied with Roxy but with less impressive results (albeit staggered damage because of the partial use) and unlike her, he can't hit 'n' run: he has to remain stationary when deployed AND there's a short delay before the cannon deploys AND it turns slowly. You can get a turn speed upgrade, but if you choose to pick up the bullet shield, you might just not bother, since the shield is planted on the front of the truck, not the front of the gun, so if you're worried about bullets you may as well just face whatever you want to attack before deploying. The bullet shield obviously does nothing for rockets or tank shells, so you'll need the rocket shoot-down upgrade if you want to be able to use this thing safely against some of the more dangerous enemies; otherwise you'll have to do what you're going to have to anyway for tanks: plant yourself and fire a few rounds quickly in between enemy attacks, then pack up and move before you get destroyed. Gunnar sucks.
Sustained Fire: 4.5s
Cooldown: 90s
Cooldown+: 85s
Cooldown++: 80s
Max Cooldown: 75s
GORDON
Gordon's antlions have the shortest cooldown of the five. They'll survive half a minute after you spawn them, assuming they don't get killed, after which they implode harmlessly. They will follow you around, but even with the speed/health upgrade, you'll leave them behind if you're cruising somewhere. Sometimes their targeting will be a little wacky and they'll gang up on a crate instead of a rocket launcher, but whatever, they spawn quickly enough. With both cooldown upgrades, you can have them out constantly, and they seem to do pretty good damage. The final upgrade makes them explode on death. If you want something more defensive, the first upgrade makes them each leave behind a health pickup behind when they die.
That wad awesome you guys. Coop with Peewi and rikdaly. Completely finished game. Sorry you couldn't stay on Peewi, the ending was fantastic. Amazing punch line.
Game is fantastically cheesy and so much more fun for it.
had a blast playing last night! definitely worth the £5 entry price
Having now tried three of the four characters (everybody but Armand), I can say that Diz is so much better than anybody else it's not even funny. EMP makes tanks almost a non-threat as long as you can drive in to zap and then anal-rape them.
Roxy's airstrike is nice but the cooldown is excruciating. I can use Roxy's airstrike to blow everything up once, or in the same period of time I can use Diz's EMP and blow everything up myself during the stun twice. It's really not even a choice. OK, you may not be able to quite kill everything with regular weapons during the stun duration that the airstrike would kill instantly...but the airstrike isn't really instant, it's on a 2.5 second delay, which may not seem like much but when you consider that EMP is instantaneous, it's much better as a defensive/panic tool in tight spots or much easier to use by just driving into the center of a furball of enemies and hitting LT.
Really all Roxy has going for her in comparison is the more impressive pyrotechnics. (Granted, in a game like this, you can't completely discount that, but still).
I have no fucking idea what the point of Gunnar's special ability is. "It's like a built-in secondary weapon which isn't really any more powerful than the random secondary weapons you pick up, and you can't move while you're using it!" Yeah, sign me up for that.
And Armand, like I said, I haven't even bothered with yet because he sounded lame based on the description alone. Plush's writeup makes it seem as though he has some potential to be effective, but probably more work than it's worth.
One thing that is nice about Roxy is that you can drive-by bombardments, just boosting through and dropping your flares in their midst. I definitely agree that Diz is the champion, though; before this came out I thought I'd go with Roxy because the airstrike looked awesome, but Diz's much-shorter cooldown and ability which is useful in every situation quickly won her top spot. I wasn't expecting to like Armand, but I think he's pretty good actually. Better with upgrades, but his default ability is still "press LT to become invincible" which is enough to get you through some powerleveling on hardcore.
Gunnar is so bad I hope they patchboost him. I'd rather drive an enemy guard tower.

Nitro extinguishes fire and brings you to max speed immediately or gives you a brief surge if you're already boosting. It has a 5s cooldown.
The health regen upgrade restores your HP up to a cap of a little less than a third, about 30%, healing ~3% every 2s and thus taking 20s to finish from nigh-death.

had a blast playing last night! definitely worth the £5 entry price
Gunnar is so bad I hope they patchboost him. I'd rather drive an enemy guard tower.
