His ability to be completely comfortable with the implications of what he was doing always impressed me. Even from the very start when he was picked up as a grad. I haven't spoken to him in a while but I'd love to sit down and pick his brains about it one day. Fascinating stuff.
You wouldn't happen to know how he fell into the position?
It was through their graduate programme. He stumbled on an ad for it in the paper one day and thought it would be a sweet job. Although he studied law and in my opinion would have made a very good lawyer, that kind of career didn't interest him even slightly. I think the grad programme had maybe 3-4 positions throughout the country and he managed to talk his way into one. It's probably a lot easier in a smaller country like NZ to get into through that route. How you get there otherwise I would have no idea.

Have fun with ICP, it's the reason I'm drinking heavily this week.
I used to run a really ancient ICP at my old job. I got really good at figuring out how to keep it running and replacing random parts. The one here is much newer, and much smaller. And it has an autosampler! (the little things make me happy.)
I would love to get back on metals analysis again, but I won't push it. I like having enough money to survive.
The problem with modern ICP (specifically this ICP-Mass Spec I run) is that it's an extremely sensitive piece of equipment. Mechanically, electronically, and the math used to calculate all the data and convert it to usable information. On top of that, there are a lot of knobs to turn on it so to speak. Tons of variables from sample introduction all the way on through. When you're detecting things in parts per billion and parts per trillion, even little variations fuck things up.
Then you have to figure out to to fix it. So far this week I've spent 25 hours and about 2 grand, but I finally got it working today. I'm also wrecked.
Besides that though, it's very good at detecting extremely trace amounts of analytes. Holy shit is it sensitive.
I work at Costco, running the gas station at my warehouse. So basically I stand outside all day (in south florida) and teach people how to pump gas. Or babysit. Gah people still live in the schoolyard.
Yeah, I used an ICP-MS at one point. Never needed it to be too terribly sensitive, so we didn't have many problems. The main one was when the samples had trace amounts of whatever the Internal Standard was. We were overkill on the maintenance, too, so the problems we had were pretty easy to trouble-shoot.
I quite like the simplicity of a regular ICP, though. Sensitive enough for the work we do.

I'm a Critical Care Fellow at URMC which honestly is a fucking sweet job. Basically once the other doctors can't take care of you cause your too sick they call my team to get shit done before whatever you have kills you. Even more awesome than that I have the most amazing little guy who I am trying to be a good dad too.

At first I was thinking there aren't that many Costcos in South Florida, so I thought you worked at the one near me in Wellington, but then I looked it up and there are a decent amount.
And I'm definitely not going to stalk you now that you are being such a prude about it. GEEZ

I was a MICU nurse who regularly worked with Critical Care Fellows. More often than not, the Fellows were talented young people who could get a patient's ass out of the fire. Sometimes they were complete shit and the senior resident bailed them out.
Now I am a nurse anesthetist student at Boston College. I am going to graduate in May 2012 and work as a nurse anesthetist.
I am in the business of saving lives.

I am a data warehouse developer for Evil INC, basically.
If you have ever mistyped a url, something like facebokk.com, and get directed to one of those crappy pages with just a bunch of search terms, that is what my company does. I am responsible for crunching data and trying to milk revenue out of that business model. We make ridiculous bank off of people who do not know how to internet properly.
I like what I do from the pure applied mathematics perspective, but I absolutely despise how we make the money. Hopefully I will find a new job soon. I can't do my job poorly, but I don't want to be doing what I do.
I also play the bass a lot, and build homemade synthesizers to make crazy electronic music.
Well, the Wellington store is pretty new, and I don't work at that one. Keep in mind not all Costcos have a gas station. Boca is supposed to get one, but I keep hearing November, and I keep not seeing construction. Without getting too specific, I work at the one closest to Century Village.
Correct. But we have to remember that this is still a co-op, so if you decide on a body part that is going to keep others from working my wiener, you are obligated to be working someone else's lap with your face.
I got a degree in aerospace engineering but it turns out there is bugger all work in that field where I live, so I ended up doing mechanical engineering at a building services company.
I hated it so much that I am back at uni doing computer science and learning how to make video games.
This is the same as improviser? Where do you preform?
I did improv comedy for four years in college, with the last year me leading the troupe. We did shows on campus and some shows off of campus as well. Last spring our troupe opened for the Upright Citizen Brigade's touring group when they came to our school and after that we performed in Seattle with Jet City Improv.

I am annoying my family and "wasting my talent at fucking everything" by being a bus driver
but what they don't understand is that I really enjoy being a bus driver

I was part of a troupe in WA, left after 4 years. Went to the Seattle International Improv Festival for 2 or 3 years. Took classes from Stephen Nachmanovitch (the best improviser one could ever learn from, I got a tattoo based on that guy. How... embarrassing probably.) I Graduated from iO and did the Second City Conservatory. Then... I stopped doing improv completely. Cold turkey. That was 3 years ago. Maybe 4. I just started dropping into theaters now and again though. There is one near my new job where I know a few of the fellas involved. Guess I'm getting back at it. Seems weird. I would have never guessed I would have stopped. And once I stopped I would have never guessed I would start again. Now I just never guess. Hope you keep at it, I know some of the cats at Jet City. They'd come over and do the festival at UP there in Seattle.
yeah I was about to apologize for it because I was trying to hurt your feelings but didn't actually believe it which is a pretty goddamn lowborn thing to do but I didn't want to bring it up because I was worrying it would sound like insincere condescension to smooth waters
so I tried to kinda skate around it with a vague assertion that your method is the correct method
and it is

they don't have me train many new guys anymore
