Surge Protector

So, um, I'm looking to buy some surge protectors. Problem is that my shopping habits behave somewhat like this:

Thus, even though I won't have more than a few thousand dollars worth of equipment on these power strips I'm concerned about making a stupid purchase. And about the possibility not being able to see in deep-water situations but that's for another thread.

The internet seems to have come to a consensus that HDMI cables, etc. don't correlate in terms of quality vs cost. But do surge protectors vary in caliber, and if so which ones present the best :)/$$$ ratio? I understand a little about how surge protectors work (from what I gather they have low impedance at 120V 50-60Hz but high resistance to impulses) so you can get technical if necessary.

Everything I have read about surge protectors is that they do dick and the companies never honor the warranties they claim to have.

If you want real protection get a reliable UPS and run your hardware through that. UPSs condition the power running through the wires and will trip if they see a surge. Plug your surge protector into that and just hope lightning never strikes your house. Nothing will protect you against a direct blast.

APC Smart UPS 700 is the newer model of what I have under my desk now. A UPS system is not just a battery backup to keep things running in a power outage but it constantly monitors the power quality and it it senses something is off it will switch to battery until the power flowing into your house is okay.

This is the outlet strip/surge protector recommended when I asked this sort of question a few months ago. But even with that get a good UPS for actual protection.

I thought plugging a surge protector into a UPS was not recommended?

edit: here is some discussion on it
    http://serverfault.com/questions/29288/ups-and-power-strip-interactions

I run my computer/expensive consoles off a Belkin UPS i picked up a few years ago. Everything else off either that outlet strip linked above, or an APC one.

The UPS has fully tripped, going to battery power, a few times. It usually gives me enough time to shut the computer down. It came with software to do this automatically via a usb cable, but it didn't play well with Vista so I uninstalled it.

Had it partially trip a few times during the summer, would just hear the fan go on for a few seconds. Glad I had it for that, I think the little jolts add up over time. Wouldn't have even knew they were happening if I was just running an outlet strip.
