Yeah, Enslaved is a fun game. It's short, has nice gameplay, looks good, and has some very nice environments and such that draw you into it. I ended up renting it after playing the demo and taking Raijin's suggestion on actually playing the full game, and I had a nice time.

I really wanted to say Demon's/Dark Souls for the way their stories are presented, but then I read the difficulty clause and, uh

    yeah

i don't understand dark souls in the same way i don't understand genital piercing

it's just a thing some people are into that they enjoy and insist has benefits and i just see as painful and unpleasant and unattractive

also throw a couple of good JRPGs in there for flavour... I know you said that he might not be into them but Lost Souls comes to mind as it has a GREAT story and totally engaging characters.

Mexico is that one game's flaw.

Metroid Prime tells a great story, but in a different way than most games.

Final Fantasy Tactics has an exellcent story, if he can wade through the localization issues. I heard that the PSP version cleaned that up, though.

To be fair, Mexico was a comment on actual mexico.

As in, the are all as bad as each other.

But you don't need to spend ten hours making a point.

I didn't do much in Mexico

I am sure there was probably things to do there

I was just burned out from doing so much already and now here's a bunch more you can do only in mexico it is like the game started over again

I guess I was hoping there would be less to do and it would be almost a bullet train to the finish

    but, no

Note: I am really bad at open world games. I just don't want that many options, dangit

I know people have already suggested them but I would like to second Heavy Rain and Fallout 3 as excellent examples of what video games can do/be

The good thing about Fallout is it can be played in third person, which reduces nausea (for me at least)

    Yes.

    Yes you fucking should.

Locked at 30fps, bullet-time Devil Trigger, only three melee weapons, "finishers" that slow down combat, retconned story, awful art direction, etc.

If you want him to see how cinematic games have become, the Uncharted series would probably be the best games to show that off. Shit is beautiful

Heavy Rain is a good one, as is Dark Souls.

I would also recommend God of War 3, to give him a taste of what that's like, Dead Space, and the Force Unleashed...because being a Jedi is fucking awesome.

So he's got a PS3, then? And you want to demonstrate the cinematic impact of games to a person who doesn't play games all that much?

    Get him Flower.

Edit: that's not a request, or a suggestion. It's a demand. Accessible enough to ease him into playing console games, no consequences so he can figure out objectives without running into a game over screen every minute, cinematic escapist experience, procedural music to demonstrate the merits of the tech, eye/earcandy to attract visitors and nurses to the scene.

    So yeah. Get him Flower.

It's not really any harder than the old Contra games

I do hate the way everyone talks up the difficulty, because if you take your time doing things ingame it's not really all that bad

FFT for the iPhone/iPad would prolly just frustrate him.

Metroid Prime's a good one, too. If you're going that route, be sure that copy of the Orange Box gets to him so he can see Half Life 2.

EDIT: also for the PC games, self-explanatory but make sure if he gets copies from someone else that they're not buggy as shit. Game crashes are a real mood killer.

I know, it's mine too. It's still just a dumbed down port of the PSP version, and the bugs they claimed to fix are just kludges that appeared from side effects of the algorithms necessary for iPhone functionality. In other words, you can rotate the screen however you want, but the framerate's fucked the whole time, sound effects are watered down like crazy, and casting is just horrible.

Point is, best experience is still the PSX version. Even with the crappy localization.
