If they could have, they would have. Bayonetta wanted to let you switch between more than two sets but they couldn't due to memory limitations. There's a LAWT of stuff that can be dismembered in this game and needs to be stored in memory. I have a feeling they just couldn't do it.

X equips an item in the menu which can then be used with the down button.

    So health or electrolyte packs.

The item menu is probably my biggest complaint about MGR.

Trying to use it in the middle of combat (say, to swap subweapon...) is a recipe for doom

Just finished this a little while ago. The final boss was one of the best I have fought in a long time, probably since Bayonetta.

It's a testament to how much I enjoyed the whole thing that I downloaded the Gray Fox skin and dove right back in to find collectibles and just generally destroy things with all that I learnt over the course of the game.

    Fucking gaming journalism, man.

Gist of the article: gaming "journalists" bitch about how MGR didn't tell them how to do anything. Like parry or augment mode. Or how to lock-on. Or how to select subweapons.

Y'know, because it's not like there are tutorials telling you how to parry. And it's not like there are codec conversations telling you how to go into augment mode. And it's not like the fucking manual that comes in the box where the game's disc is tells you what all the controller buttons do, right? That never happened, and to think that it did would be silly.

    Fucking game journalists, man.

Personally, I agree. The game did a poor job of explaining things. 3 more early VR mandatory tutorial missions and you're fine. Blade Wolf kicked my ASS because I didn't know you could lock on.

My copy didn't come with a manual, because I rented it, so maybe that's my fault. I also didn't do Codec calls because those were always the most tedious, talky bullshitty bits of MGS games, so since the game didn't make me, I didn't bother.

Look, I dug the game, I thought it was real fun. I thought they did a great job of making a game with a story Kojima would've done, but with an editor and some people to clean of the script and trim it down and make it work. But there are a few things it doesn't quite nail and think passing on all of it's dynamics in an easily swallowable pill is one of them. It's because of forums like this that I figured out some of the more esoteric things.

All that being said, they totally tell you how to use Augmented vision like really early on. And how to parry. It just takes time to nail the parry so it feels natural. Those are baseless complaints, I feel.

Well he's fucking doomed now. Piss a blogger off and they'll blog about it.

I read the Kotaku article where the guy whined about not knowing what to do and I was genuinely confused. I mean, I've quit two +games and returned to the Title screen in MGR, because after I selected continue, and then bumped up my difficulty for my next play through, I hit "yes" to DO YOU WANT TO PLAY THE TUTORIAL by accident.

I mean, as soon as a new mechanic is introduced, you get a VR mission dedicated to it, and a codec telling you about it.

What I don't get is, there's a button on the Pause menu that reads simply: Help. This button tells people the combinations for the combos. There's also an options menu that has a controller map that players can adjust configurations for. So basically, between those two screens and the tutorial off the top of the game, players should have the basic knowledge needed to start playing.

So basically, 5 button presses and players discover all the basic things they can do in the game.

So why are people having so much trouble figuring out the things that Metal Gear Rising is telling them to their faces?

And here we have our first great example as to why 8gb of memory in the PS4 is a good thing!

Also, all this talk about locking on... I have played the demo twice. Once for like five minutes, and once again to its conclusion. I don't even remember if it told me how to lock on, but I know for a fact that I did. Must be my Dark Souls muscle memory kicking in. More reason people should play those games.

If I'm being cynical, it's because the game doesn't hold your hand for an hour or two and force you to do every action in the game.

They are complaining about the lack of tutorials, the same tutorials that people complain about.

Tutorial handholding you can't skip is a metacritic boosting strategy I feel. It suits their need to play through games in a hurry to a tee. They lose sight of the fact that other people in a more relaxed environment want to play games, not just experience them.

One of the essential features of play is discovery. Discovery is one of my favourite things about playing action games and I will fight to the death anyone who thinks all action games should hand hold you.

There's also popups right on the screen with button inputs every single time you're meant to learn something. When you get the codec to tell you to use augment mode, there's a fat Dpad Up: AR Vision on the screen. When you walk into the dark subway later in the game, there's a fat Dpad Up: AR Vision on the screen, just in case you forgot.

Legendary Dark Knight mode in the PC version of DMC4. Memory limitations were why you only fought a handful of enemies at a time in that game.

You are correct sir. This was my experience as well.

I died against the wolf a few times, said out loud, "What the fuck? This camera sucks, I can't fucking fight and move the right fucking stick at the same fucking time. Is there no fucking lock-on in this fucking game?"

I fucking curse a fucking lot when I'm gettin' mad at video games.

Then I looked at the controller map and dominated the wolf on my next try.

But the camera is still kind of crappy when you are surrounded by enemies. I guess the solution is to not get surrounded?

So hey, weird Chapter 5 glitch in Rising
Near the end of the level, at teh section outside The Gideon Hotel after you've fought the dinosaur-like UGs, is anyone else getting a glitch where the Hostage dialog doesn't occur?

I get spotted right off the bat by the Grad before the dialog ever starts up. I can save the hostage, but I never get their conversation like for the rest

EDIT: okay, running forward then quickly dashing back before
    the grad could lock on
    triggered it

No, you won't. You will eventually look at your horde of stolen S-rank dudes and then you will throw poor Magpie out to the ocean-curb like everybody else. You are running a business, and you have no room for slackers, regardless of whether you may or may not have kidnapped them with balloons while they were sleeping.

Also, Peace Walker has the most elaborate easter egg I've ever seen in a video game.

Glad you said that, because the intro movie made little to no sense for me, and made me very angry.
Here, let's undo the most powerful moment in the history of this series, and possibly the entire medium!

The second that cassette is played with The Boss on it, Big Boss should have shot him and been like "I shot her point blank, fuck off."

But yeah, I mean the only complaint I have is that I want this TOO Much. I totally see now how PERFECT this was portable. The missions are quick, they're fun, and they're Metal Gear. I want it on the Vita, but Im playing it on the XBox.

I can not help singing 99 Red Balloons everytime i abduct someone.

Also at some point I will want to take this online. I can't imagine how fun it is co-op. The unlocks are amazing.

Man, now that I have the HD collection, I'm presented with the same issue as other people: do I play chronological or release order? I've already played and beaten all of them with the exception of Solid Snake and Peace Walker. I may have to go release order to get the full effect. Good thing I still have my original launch day copy of MGS kicking around.

Do you get Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as bonuses in the HD Collection since the versions of 2 and 3 in the HD Collection are Substance and Subsistence?

If so, then the only answer to how to play Metal Gear, if you have all of them is Chronological. That's how I plan to. When my HD Collection arrives.

As far as I am aware, yes. Each chapter has their own separate "score card" for ranks, etc.

The only reason to pick New Game ( erases all customisation, ranks but keeps collectibles ) is because there are some titles which require going through the game without upgrading certain things.

Unless I've been lied to by horrible, horrible people, the HD collection has Substance and Subsistence, yes. Pretty much I'm looking at this as I paid about $12 for Peace Walker and got three games I've played before and one I haven't as bonus content. Full of win. • Vincent GraysonVincent Grayson Frederick, MDRegistered User regular
Chronological is the wrong way to do it. MGS3 has a lot of references and callbacks to MGS2 stuff that loses its impact if you play MGS2 later.

Play them in the order they were released.

They are, but with a catch. MGS3 is missing Snake vs Monkey, the Boss rush mode, and very strangely that dream sequence easter egg. MGS2 is missing the skateboarding game. Other than that, they've got all the remaining bells and whistles, like the camera overhaul and MG1 and 2 in MGS3 and all the virtual mission stuff in MGS2.

And I'd throw my vote for chronological. I did it, it's fine. But only if you've already played every game out there and are just doing a general replay. It's absolutely not something to do for a fresh playthrough.
