[Skyrim] & [The Elder Scrolls] Please post in new thread.
Chocobolicious is right. You get two maps if you preorder. One paper one that everyone gets that buys a hard copy of the game, and another "burlappy" one because you preordered.
There is a lot of misinformation out there about the map. You only get one map. All copies in the first production run have the premium map bundled inside them.
Except all the unboxing videos show a very specifically paper map. So unless paper = burlap, I have to wonder at that.
See my previous posts about the map... basically it looks like "high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap" is just marketing speak for textured paper. Heck I'd like to be wrong but I wouldn't count on it.
Bethesda has also bundled maps with both morrowind and oblivion, so there is a good chance that skyrim will have a default paper map with all copies as well. Not sure though if fallout 3 came with one though.
So is this the sort of game where racial abilities and what-not matter, or should I just be picking a race I like for lolRoleplay reasons?
You won't be using your racial as often as anything else. If you want a head start with a certain build, you could pick a race that compliments that.
Going Block, Enchanting, Heavy Armor, One-handed, and Smithing? Orc has +5, +5, +10, +5.
Light Armor, Smithing, Speech, Two-handed? Nord gets +5, +5, +5, +10.
etc, etc.
Even with the smaller bonuses, it's a SP and by all mean play whatever is the coolest to you. No one is going to lock you out of a raid because of your race or misplaced talent points.
That said, I'm sure there are racist NPCs somewhere who might talk down to you depending on what you are. But alas, one quick shield bash to the face usually shuts them up.

Is steam not pre-loading this? Seems pretty weird, guess i'll be joining the other million people frantically restarting steam at 1 am to get the download started.
Secrets, lies, and tragedy. The trifecta.

Don't preloads normal appear a few days before launch ? I was expecting tomorrow or Wed.
SKYRIM !
We have 3 guys in my section at work, including me, all taking the day off to play. I'll be the only one playing at 1am, though...
I almost pre-ordered a physical copy but realizing that i'd probably end up stuffing that collector stuff in a shoebox the day after I got it was what got me to just go with the Steam download. Less overall clutter I suppose.
Do we know anything about the speech system in this game?
Is it like in Fallout where you have to pass flat speech checks, or is there a silly minigame like in Oblivion?
I can't recall for sure but I think the indication has been that it's just going to be a flat check.
I may be the only one a little disappointed by this, as I may be the only one who actually sort of enjoyed the minigame in Oblivion. It was pretty easy once you figured it out. Although there was a mod that did make certain types of speech more attractive to certain types of NPCs than others (IE, boasting works better with a macho warrior) that I always wanted to try and never got around to.
Part 15 has a "dragon hunt" (in a previous episode he walked right passed a dragon w/o noticing it and got a lot of flack from his viewers about it) and a few nice deaths. No major spoilers, just wondering around and killing stuff mostly.
I couldn't help but laugh when he shot that elk in the ass and killed it. Its body literally flew a good 50 feet. The physics in this game are so fucked.
I like when that kind of stuff happens. If I want to see something fall realistically, I'll drop a pencil. It is only in video games that I get to see the unexpected happen!
You sir, must be in my head...reading my thoughts.............
Hrmm, I feel like thematically and aesthetically I want to be nothing more than a nord...but due to the stat disitribution, and Berserker Rage, the Orc is closer to what I intend to do with my guy. Worse yet, even if I were to play both at some point, I would probably build them exactly the same way.
At the moment my tentative plan is to still go with my Breton (almost pure-) spellcaster, as I've never played that type of character before so it will be challenge and I'm eager to try out Skyrim's supposed magic improvements.
I've pretty much never used Conjuration before at all, though, and I'm going to have to make sure I pump Destruction.
We need that awesome chart that had Races and Skills in the OP. I can't find it in this thread.
You mean this?
Yeah, I love that thing. It's beautiful.
I made a quick spreadsheet totaling up the Perks in the various Skill Trees. If we only get 50 Perks, you're not going to be able to max out more than four Trees.

I wouldn't worry too much about the race stats. It mattered more in Morrowind and Oblivion because everything was tied to a long list of attributes. The choices you made at the beginning could have a substantial effect on your character. But those attributes are gone in Skyrim. Skills and their perks are now the central focus; and if you wanted to "game" the leveling system to get more perks for your favored skills, you'd probably want to choose an opposite race to your intended class, right?
It seems like your racial choice won't have quite the same impact on your character, and that gives you greater freedom and roleplay opportunities. I won't feel like I'm making the wrong choice or being punished for choosing a race not traditionally associated with my class. I don't have to pre-plan my character, run calculations and spreadsheets in order to make the "right" choice.

The most sane way to pick a race is based on the sound played when that race/gender is injured.
You have the entire game to max every Skill. You might only see your character's face once. But you're going to hear that howl or shriek of pain every time you play.
This makes me wonder if we'll have the option of picking a voice for our character like some other RPG's like Neverwinter Nights let you do.

Awesome awesome. I assume this information is recorded on a wiki somewhere? I kind of want to go in blind, but I always fuck up RPG characters that way. Obscure systems within obscure systems.

I'm not able to get Friday off work. Going to rush through as fast as I can then enjoy a nice weekend of solving that internet dragon problem. And livestreaming it.
Anyone one here read the Night Angel trilogy? I want to make a Durzo Blint character and am trying to figure out which race and mix of perks would make the most sense. I'm thinking a combination of One Handed, Illusion, Pickpocketing, Alteration, and Sneak perks could make something pretty close...
I wonder what the default key mapping for the right & left hand on the PC is going to be. I mean..the logical choice'd be RMB for the right hand and LMB for the left hand, but I'm still used to the Oblivion method of RMB controlling the shield and LMB controlling your weapon..even though you held your shield in your left hand and your weapon in your right :rotate:
I roughly meet the recommended, but would anyone know of something with similar spec needs I may have on steam or there could be a demo for?
Its a pretty safe bet that if you can run FO3/NV on nice settings with some texture packs and other mods installed you should be alright. Skyrim is still just a tweaked version of the same engine after all, and hopefully better optimized (as I recall unmodded FO3 had some limitation where it wouldn't utilize more than 2GB of memory).
Why does this LP guy keep calling the female NPC he has "Carl"?
Why does he go "BOOM!" every time he uses a dragon shout?
Why does he aim a bow the way one would aim a gun and doesn't take trajectory into account?
Why does miss or flat out ignore so much stuff?
Because he is simple-minded and we love him for it.

They changed that with Oblivion.
Only Alexander McQueens.
