You probably know him best for that classic newspaper comic that grandma cut out and mailed to you on a disturbing basis, Family Circus.
Oh, but what can we say of the 50+ year comic? It's endearing characters and witty humor that cuts deep even to this day. From the deep philosophical meaning Keane put into his strips, or the artfully executed jokes, he was clearly the master of the one-panel comic strip. His skill would raise a new generation of one-panel strips such as the Far Side.
His son Jeff was already being groomed to take over the comic, but no doubt the Family Circus in the mornings to come will missing that special something.

I have to agree with L Ron. Family Circus never once even brought a smirk to my face. I found his comics to be very dated and way to campy for my tastes but then again I am a monster and have a sick sense of humor to (and am under the age of 80) so really I was never the intended demography for his work. Just like Cathy is a good comic, it's not really meant for me.
...okay, that was a bad example. Cathy is a horrrrrible comic.

I may not have enjoyed the comic, but there is no denying how influential it was on future comics. That is my primary reason for mourning this death.
I was ready to get even more sad today. Heavy D, a good friend's grandpa dying in a fire that nearly killed his family, and the possibility of Stan Lee dying.
It would be too much to bear.

Don't forget Andy Rooney too!
I actually think that Stan Lee is secretly a robot with the aging exterior of a human but in reality he will never die.
it would be nice if it meant the comic wouldn't run anymore
or really, who cares, because newspaper comics are awful anyway
largely because they've been dominated for decades by soulless, humorless tripe trudging on with the momentum of a glacier-sized dog shit smearing its way down olympus

i liked the ones where someone would run around all day and we could follow the intertwining trail

I remember the days of Calvin & Hobbs and Far Side, those were the good ol' days in the funnies.
Really even hearing about his death is not saddening to me as I am sure he lived a long and fruitful life as a cartoonist. Largely I am indifferent to the news but then again it could be that it is because I'm just largely desensitized to death.
In 1992, when Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson began requiring newspapers to run his Sunday comic feature in half-page size, Keane opposed the idea. Keane said, "I can see why he wants to do it for himself, but it is a disservice to other cartoonists. It diminishes the space other cartoonists get or forces newspapers to drop strips."[13] Keane also voiced his displeasure when Watterson announced his retirement three years later, saying that the decision was "not fair to the readers or to the editors who have paid good money and provided space in their newspapers."]

Bil Keane didn't like the fact that Watterson wanted a half page spread for Calvin and Hobbes
whaaat!

no I kid
I don't want him dead
but I hate his goddamned comic
It isn't nearly as bad as the movies or the current TV show... my god that is just mindless filth in my opinion.
The comic had its moments.
Not that anybody is dumb enough to buy a newspaper to find out
It makes up for everything else.
whaaat!
*Offers you a plate of lasagna.*
no it doesn't
That image mcp posted pretty much wins the day.
bill keane also didn't use the entire space he was given, so I don't see why he was complaining in the first place. watterson is using what you ain't!
nah
you should trundle out the same horseshit puns and malapropisms for fifty years like me
Either way, yeah, incredibly boring comic, even if it had an impact on some people.
