Lion machine with effed-up Java

Mike DangerMike Danger "Diane..."a place both wonderful and strangeRegistered User regular
I TA a course on Intro to CS, and one of the students has screwed up the Java installation on his personal machine beyond belief. I can't even get "java -version" to produce any output. Apparently he tried to install the Java Developer Preview and either didn't completely install it or installed it but then tried to remove it. It's causing the IDE (BlueJ) to throw an error about how it "can't create a virtual machine".

Is there any way to get him back to the basic Java installation for Lion, without reinstalling the OS? Google has given me conflicting answers.
