Does Hate Plus deserve its own thread? It's as good if not better than the original so far, but it's not what I'd call optimized at all. Runs like molasses.

Probably not, I don't think it would get much traffic for what it's worth. I've only gotten a chance to play through the first day of the game so far, and it seems about as good as the first game so far. It's kinda cute that thing she did where you have to actually wait after you finish a day, but I've got to say it might be a while before I get that play over the course of 9 days achivement unless it isn't consecutive.
Edit: Oh and I'll make sure to post my picture for you guys when I go for that achievment, heh.

Well I made a thread without any replies, so I guess you're right. :P
I need to finish Analogue before looking into Hate Plus.
I only briefly checked where I left off the other day, but it kind of looks like a brick wall. I read the latest unread messages, got Mute's opinion on things, and that was it.
I also checked out the first two episodes of Corpse Party: Tortured Souls.
First, in case you couldn't tell from the last trailer, it's definitely not for the squeamish. They do not hold back in showing off the literal buckets of gore and other fluids.
But at the same time, a lot of the violence feels comical to me. What makes the CP games so effectively jarring is how they hold back showing off the really gruesome moments, instead using sound and narrative descriptions coupled with your mind's eye to paint a far more disturbing picture than just witnessing some over-the-top splatter. The more I keep seeing this "less is more" approach, the more I realize how it's way more disturbing. The Anime adaption skips that subtlety entirely and just goes right for the gross-out visuals. Also, the ghosts just aren't as creepy when you can get a perfect view of them at all times.
The bigger problem is how it abridges (and at times, outright skips) some of the most crucial moments from the game. There's one scene transition where it literally goes "three ghosts later". They also completely messed up the big scene with
Morishige
That aside, it's still a decent adaption. Nowhere near the train-wreck that is the manga.
Unfortunately not. They're Blu Ray OVAs. I'm not sure if there's some policy regarding the streaming of OVAs, but I usually don't see any posted in Crunchyroll or otherwise.
They obviously went the OVA route so they could go wild with the gore, but it would have been a lot better if they at least made it 12 episodes instead of just 4.
Looking forward to this. Apparently it's easy enough to mod the game with the artwork and music from the PS2 version? In any case, I can't wait to finally play this, and hope this opens the door for other more recognizable VNs.

I need more Vita visual novels. Already hyped for Danganronpa 1. Is there any chance of an XBLAZE Code: Embryo localization?
These are the days that I feel bad I never stuck with mah Japanese learnin's.

Probably no chance. There's lots of VNs on the Vita(well, quite a few at least), and US publishers haven't been kind. I'm still sad we didn't get NISA's Science Report Investigation game.
I did eventually go back and beat Corpse Party but the scariest scene for me in the entire game, bar none, was
the flashback to the original Sachiko murders. The bloodcurdling audio, combined with the inability to actually see what is happening, was physically sickening. I made the mistake of playing with my earbuds instead of the regular speakers and boy howdy. That was possibly the most frightening thing I've ever experienced in a video game.
That sort of thing is far scarier to me than a bunch of cartoon gore.

Which ending did you get? Also, that means it's time for the Boooooook of Shaaaadooooows.
Corpse Party is the boss. The first time I played through it was on my Vita, in bed, over the course of two nights with earbuds. The best experience, but yeah, it sits with you for a while. I agree with your spoiler, that was the most awful (in a fun way) part for me as well, but there's a lot that the game does amazingly well.
The running from ghosts would always give me small chills, and if there's any one scene that was just like "ah fuck that's creepy as shit" it was the child spirit Yuki
becoming
Holy shit.
I myself have been sitting on Book of Shadows a bit because I can't stand the transition to first-person pixel-bitching. Are the stories worth all the scanning and backtracking I've heard about?

Unfortunately I can't afford it at the moment, but I think I need a breather after Blood Covered anyway. It's not just disturbing, it's also really depressing.
@bss I never got that scene because I was only caught by a ghost once
the little boy, who buried me alive
Fuck going back for all the bad ends, maybe I will YouTube them sometime if they are ever uploaded where they can be seen all at once without the stress of playing through the game again
I played Corpse Party in order to feel despair, so I intentionally played the game with pretty much no savvy the first time in order to get all the bad stuff. That death is another good one, just how long it makes you have to live (hee) with it.
Wrong ends aside, though, I think cj is referring to there being two not-wrong ends, and they only really hinge on a couple decisions in the last chapter, if I remember correctly.

Right, there's two endings; the true ending, and the 'bad' end that leads into Book of Shadows.
And it's very much worth playing. The ending to Book of Shadows' bonus chapter is absolutely bonkers, better than any ending in Blood Covered. It also leads into the next game.
Right Stuf has a long, awesome history of shipping stuff before the actual date listed on their website. Basically if they get it in the warehouse early, they will start shipping it out.
I could not handle Corpse Party. Like, at all. I got to the end of the first chapter, I think, and the ending was just...I just said "Nope."
I mean, it's fantastic. But I just couldn't handle it. Specifically:
Finding Seiko hanging in the bathroom stall, and the "SEEEEIKOOOO! NOOOOOOOOO!!" wail right after it.
I played the game last Halloween because of the big sale that it was in and it was Vita compatible and I wanted something else to play despite having all sorts of stuff already. Did the earbuds, did the darkness, etc. Just got right to me.
I still can hear that scream if I think about it.
And I can't imagine that that scene was anything -but- tame compared to shit later on in the game.
Corpse Party is definitely a game that, when I'm gushing about it to people, I need to caveat the entire concept of someone else playing it with "well, you need to be okay with all this stuff especially since the best way to play the game is to dive straight into the nightmare fuel..." It does exactly what you describe extremely well and I love it for that, but yeah. Sometimes it's a: "That sounds really cool, would I like it?" "Uh, um... you probably shouldn't play it..."
Like I know people that get bothered by playing L4D2 in the wrong setting. As much as they'd love Corpse Party I don't think they could be subjected to it.

That really is tame compared to things later on. And Book of Shadows' alternate endings.

Yeah, see, I figured. I'm usually resilient to anything forms of media can throw at me, but the VA-work in Corpse Party is definitely not one of them.
Thanks to the latest Groupees Doujin Bundle Sale, I nabbed Higurashi: When They Cry on the cheap. I don't suppose anyone knows if they'll provide Steam codes once the game is released on Steam? Either way, I had to bite at the deal.
It is my understanding that there are three essential mods for the game: one that replaces the portraits with the PS2 version's portraits, one that does the same for the music, and one that replaces the translation with a better one.
Some people might prefer the original portraits, sure, but I just can't take that FFVII concept sketch/Popeye arms look seriously.
Regarding the patches in that link...
1. For the Sprite and BG Patches, do I just need to download the first link, or all five links listed?
If I do the latter, it asks to replace the same files from the other links, so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to just download the topmost or bottommost.
2. Which music patch do I use? There's more than a few alternatives between original and PS2 versions.

They outright change some of the fates of the characters, but if you really want to know what happens here...
But then Kizami appears and jabs a knife right into Morishige's neck.
As mixed as I am about them changing this, the whole knife-to-neck scene was actually well done and made me squirm something fierce.

Interesting. I wonder what ending route it's taking. Is it being simulcast anywhere?

I never fear death or dyin', I only fear never trying.

And as with all Ryukishi works, the first is optional. His drawings of the human form are generally AWFUL, but he is dynamite at expressions.
The second one is essential. The third is more of a cleaning up than a retranslation.

The Answer arc is a separate game, like the Eternal Punishment to Innocent Sin.
5/6/7 are from the second game. So you just want the first link.
I'm using the original music mod. Sounds a lot better, and the PS2 one seems incomplete.
I'm working my way through episode 1, so I'll give impressions here and there.
