So I created a character to join the Dark Brotherhood.
At first I thought I'd make a sneaky Khajiit as befits a guild of stealth assassins.
But instead I made a orc who just shows up at people's house and beats them to death with a hammer in broad daylight.
He's having trouble fitting in.
"So, your first contract. No chance for a bonus, huh? That's all right, you're better off! Who needs magic items when you've got raw skill? And the great thing about killing a target up close and personal is you can talk to 'em before you do it! You know, say something scary! For example, this one time I had a contract to kill a little Nord girl at her birthday party. She asked me if I was the jester! So I said to her."No, I am a messenger of death." You should have seen the look on her face! Ha ha ha ha! Anyway, she won't be seeing age six!"

I had one of those in Oblivion. For every mission I totally blew off the 'stealthy assassin' archetype and killed my targets, the people surrounding them, the people not surrounding them, and like half of the town guard. Good times.

So, Illusion. Just started a new character, what are the de-facto spells I should be using? I'm a Khajit assassin type, mostly going Illusion/Dagger/Bow route. Tell me thread, what should I do and use!?

The Fury line of spells, with the silent casting perk, is great for killing off rooms of enemies from afar
The Calm spells are great for stopping the occasional bear/tiger ambush
Muffle is ok, but you're better off just getting boots with a Muffle enchantment
Invisibility can be useful until your Sneak is high enough to sneak right past someone's face
The forsworn conspiracy is bugged to hell and back for everyone. New character won't fix that. I just avoid the whole stupid town for now, until they do something about it.
Edit: I got a fun bug where the quest kept trying to restart AFTER I left the mine, which meant it bugged up over and over and I got more and more bounty while guards I couldn't deal with besides "murdering" just followed me everywhere. Markarth is ten types of retarded.
So is there a downside to purchasing skill levels? For some reason I just have it in my head that there's a downside but I don't know where I got the idea from.

Also, for perks prioritize dual casting and "your spells now work on x" feats. Dual casting doubles the effective level cap of spells (after the +raw boosts!) and will be necessary to effect a lot of enemies i think.

You don't get to enjoy the grind? This is actually the only real use for money other than buying houses I guess.

Other than the expense, no. It's actually a good way to make sure certain key skills stay high as you level. I found light armor levels too slowly on my assassin, so I trained it a bunch.
So, I might have missed it in the other thread, but is there any way to work around the backstroking Dragon bug? 'Cause I gotta kill this one, and the fucker goes from Hummingbird-esque stationary to peregrine falcon in less than a second, and this "battle" has consisted of me firing my bow, then sprinting to hell and back after the Dragon takes off, flies around and heals, then disappears into the upper atmosphere.

I actually really like Markarth, specifically because it inspires these strong feelings in us. That means, in my mind, they did a good job. That entire city is a no-win scenario and even when you think you've made the right choice, some other fact pops up that makes your selection just as fucked up if not more so than the other option.
My crazy mage bought a house there. I like to think he did it so he can keep an eye on the Silverbloods.

I'm mostly annoyed the Silverbloods get plot armor. I'm playing a guy who doesn't commit crimes at all, but for Markarth I'd be tempted to just take the bounty.
I bought the house in Whiterun right at the start. I didn't even think about going somewhere else. Didn't even know if you could. Like in Morrowind, I sided with the first house I even met up with (Hlaalu) and just rolled with it.
So a couple of quests into the Imperial Legion questline, I fucking put on my game face. Fucking Stormcloaks.
Also, I like that it's sorta discreet and modest in size. I like to think that the people just see me walking around town and think 'oh there's that dude, he's probably some up and coming merchant or something'. Little do they know that I kill Gods.

I have to be a bit honest when I say that part of my hate for the place stems from the 80-90% drop in framerate I get by being in the town and looking at anything other than a wall.
Speaking of framerates, can anyone recommend some good optimization mods?
I remember about a week after Oblivion was out, I had a nice suite already of about five or six mods that did nothing but improve framerates. Didn't make things look nicer, but just invisibly reduced polys, changed the way things rendered etc.
I can run Skyrim at pretty high settings all round at a rock solid 30fps. I wouldn't mind turning everything down a step to get a buttery 60fps, but I rather like how things look on these power specs. If I can eek out an extra five or ten frames just with some ini tweaks or some model swap mods I'd be all for it.
There was a great one for Oblivion that did something to the LOD models in the distance that literally doubled my framerate for no visual cost.

Houses are chosen based on the neighborurhood, to me. This means Whiterun is easily the best house. A nice, cozy neighbourhood certainly beats Riften's hive of scum and villainy or Markarth's... Markarth. I don't need to lord a big house or anything, either. I'm imagining my guy as the kind of person who goes around and greets people, chats a bit with the neighbours, and joins the kids' game of hide-and-seek for a bit. Obviously a warrior, but a pretty nice dude. Then he grabs a bow, goes out, and plummets half a dozen dragons from the sky before filling them with arrows, and makes sure to go back home in time for dinner.
Though I recently visited Solitude for the first time and the place also seems a pretty nice place to live. Does one have to join the imperial Legion to buy that house?
If I could mod: I'd create a survival skill that allowed you to make your own temporary shelters in the wilderness. Igloo's for up north, tents for the plains and a lean-to for wooded areas.
So, thieves guild guy tells me to meet him at the flagon. I wait and wait and wait... The guy wont leave his stall in the market. Is there anything i can do to fix this, reloading a save wont help
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
Anyone have any tips for fighting Red Eagle as a two-handed warrior? I'm at level 27 and he's kicking the shit out of me.
I felt super badass in my new Ebony armor and now he's putting me in my place. I have a feeling some of it might be due to the extra damage his fire sword is putting out and my fire resistances aren't working due to the patch.
So is there a downside to purchasing skill levels? For some reason I just have it in my head that there's a downside but I don't know where I got the idea from.

yeeeep this is precisely what I did
I made sure to sell my shit to the shopkeeper in Riften who offers it, so when I ran down her money, I'd buy a level and sell some more stuff to get some of it back
helps with the "shopkeepers can't afford my shit" thing I'm running into at level 35+ too

It's like the game wants me to play something else in my Steam library.
The console command doesn't work. Open console, click target - in this case, the ID is 00035541 - the type "kill". And nothing. Reopen console, exit console. Nothing. Reopen, type "kill 00035541", exit console. Nothing. Really freaking weird. Any ideas?
An unusual location I found while using the 'moveto' console command to locate Viola Giordano for the 'Blood on the Ice' quest, as she is missing from my game currently (this appears to prove it).
The game list this location as 'Unknown Location' in my save file, not sure if it has a proper name or where to find the location id.
In it found a plus (+) shaped corridor with one living NPC (M) and several dead ones (Viola, Edda, Nepo the Nose, Tynan, and a few others). These were all NPCs that had been killed at one point or another, aside from the one living NPC. Appears to be nothing but an endless expanse outside.
Also, the boxes on the ground are empty coffins.
Some kind of purgatorial death locker? Thoughts?
tl,dr: Weird location found. What do you think it is?
I switch weapons a lot. Is that real common for you guys? I typically sneak around with a bow and daggers; if I can sneak right up on a guy with the daggers, awesome, but if I can't, I like to open up with a bow shot. Sometimes, I can confuse the enemies by continuing to sneak around after I hit them. I can get in a number of shots before I get noticed. When I finally do get seen, though, I typically switch to a heavy one-handed weapon (like an axe), and a shield. I don't have any feats in Blocking yet, but the shield slam attack is nice for setting people off balance for a moment. I use it in between shouts to keep enemies semi-staggered.
I assume that once I hit 100 Stealth and pick up Shadow Warrior, I'll end up sticking with daggers all the time. Does it work the way I think it does? I can just squat down into stealth in the middle of combat, and the enemy will take a moment to detect me again? Because ... that's fucked up. I do 15x normal damage when I sneak attack with a dagger, and I can get that rating even higher with some additional equipment. Being able to do that at will seems like a bit much.
Which of these is most handy? I'm about to make the choice about where to put the points. I'm guessing not axes, as dudes don't stay alive long enough. The most trouble I've had with bad guys is definitely armor related (magic or metal), which makes me lean towards maces, but swords feel cooler in the kill animations.
I used a warhammer pretty much the whole game. I just wanted to have the biggest damage number next to the item description, basically. The elemental fury shout eliminates any problem with the weapon speed.

Not really. You can try to squat and attack immediately, but most of the times you're not gonna be fast enought. The "redetection" time is no more then a split second, not even enought to just roll behind a wall/rock or something. I can become invisible whenever I want to and the enemy immediately loses track of me though, but that might just be a result of 100 Sneak itself. Also, spoilers:
You can get a power from the thieve's guild that turns you invisible for three minutes and keeps making you invisible even after attacks once a day. There's also the power from the Shadow Standing Stone, but that doesn't last as long and ends after performing an attack/action.
Invisibility potions are nice too, but the ingredients (Vampire dust/Nirnroot) are hard to come by.
