He cannot draw men that don't look like transvestites.
You cannot look at regular Tidus and tell me he doesn't look like a chick. At least Amano took the concept and ran with it instead of making some half-bishonen ladyboy.
I've always maintained that if Square were to make a "Chocobo Rancher" game that played like Harvest Moon, only completely devoted to the breeding, raising, and racing of chocobos it would be the most fun FF game ever
I would never again leave the house.
I wouldn't even bathe. I already have the cathedar, and I could make a quick colostomy bag with a penknife and a grocery sack.... maybe some glue.
Give it online capabilities and I wouldn't even eat
I am in the same boat.

I can't believe you philistines are actually entertaining the thought of an entire game based on one of the worst aspects of FFVII.

No no no. Amano did not "run with it" Tidus looks nothing like a chick, whereas Amano's version looks like something you'd pick up on the streets of Bangkok.

Chocobo raising catered to those with infinite patience and the pedantic. Naturally I got a gold chocobo without much difficulty but it was a pretty lame portion of the game and it involved a lot of unnecessary hoop jumping. Having to run each chocobo up to S class was a pain in the dick, especially since there were, what, 2 tracks?
It makes me laugh that so many people liked the most boring part of that game, and yet didn't like the Draw system of VIII which took the same concept of "doing the same thing over and over again", except it had a measurable effect on one's abilities throughout the game. Unlike Chocobo breeding, which got you some extraneous materia in the last third of the game.

Nay, sir, it is you who are the phillistine
also XIII sucked nuts
I'm pretty sure XIII isn't out yet.
I'm going to assume you meant VIII, in which case you are simply wrong. It was a much more mature and experimental game. They tried a lot of things that they had never done in a game before. Some of them worked, others didn't, but probably the biggest change was a character-driven plot. It was really the first time where they actually developed the characters and tried to make them three-dimensional. It wound up being very heavy-handed, though, (i.e. when the party thinks Seifer died and Squall tweaks. Crappy dialogue galore) and I think a lot of that was due to the translation. If I were very dedicated I'd learn Kanji (or whatever it is they use for games) and play it again but I just don't have the patience to draw all that fucking magic all the fuck over again. What you have to remember about the game is that it is essentially a coming-of-age story and that the fight to save the world, as it were, is merely a vehicle to convey that message.

So you're admitting to being pedantic?
It makes me laugh that so many people liked the most boring part of that game
Obviously what's boring for some is entertaining for others. Do you claim to be so superior in your definitions that everyone else in this thread who enjoyed chocobo breeding is wrong in that enjoyment?
and yet didn't like the Draw system of VIII which took the same concept of "doing the same thing over and over again", except it had a measurable effect on one's abilities throughout the game.
There were numerous problems with the draw system, including the potential to lose stats in battle.
Unlike Chocobo breeding, which got you some extraneous materia in the last third of the game.
Excluding the extremely useful(albeit lengthy) Knights of the Round materia, when the goal of a game is to entertain, -and I think I've shown conclusively that chocobo raising does just that- entertaining aspects of the game are hardly extraneous, they acheive the prime directive.

in conclusion, suck a dick Shorty, chocobos rule
I think the current discussion much makes it clear that I'm pretty freaking pedantic at times.
As long as we're talking about "enjoyment", then no. They can enjoy whatever they like. That doesn't make it a particularly good game element.
Uh...yeah. Duh. I don't recall saying the draw system was good. In fact probably the biggest flaw was the one you just mentioned. Casting magic for anything other than healing became pointless as it did more damage to you in the long run. So are you saying that there are no flaws with chocobo breeding? That is wrong, and I've already said why.
So, "Materia" are entertaining aspects of FF7? Yeah. Yeah they are. That is essentially what you just said. However, I was referring specifically to the ones you get for breeding chocobos. And they are extraneous. None of them are necessary. It is impossible to demonstrate conclusively that anything is entertaining as "entertainment" is non-quantifiable.
Also: The "extreme usefulness" of Knights of the Round is easily debatable as there are far more efficient, and less annoying, methods for dealing damage. Let's not get into elaborate materia combinations, though.

Man, I liked FFVIII a lot, quite a bit more than most people, but to praise it on character development? Is that a joke? From Disk 1 to Ultimecia, the only development on Squalls part is that he figures out he needs others...a little. Ironically Lionheart is so freakng powerful that he, in fact, does not need anyone else. Zell's character development is learning that he lives with his mom. Oh, and he has a short temper. Rinoa? You learn she's just a spoiled brat of a powerful military man, and a couple other spoiler things that have nothing to do with character development, but a convenient plot device. Irving is an impotent ladies man, who has stage fright. his characters "climax" is at the end of the first disk. Selphie? Oh noes, she lost a few friends at Trabia Garden. Deep. Hell, Quistis is about the only character in the game that has anything resembling depth with her inner conflict on being such a young instructor, thinking she's in love, and the stress of those factors. But even that whole aspect of her personality is nice and summed up before you even freaking leave the first island. Laguna had a reasonable amount of development but like everyone else as soon as his "crisis" was solved his character was simply a plot point.
And that's it. That is the entirety of the depth of any character in the game, no one is given any development past who they are with their initial introduction, and the only real reason for any of them to exist is to teach Squall that he's not alone.
Further plot spoilers involving their past isn't development. It's just interesting to learn that they actually mentioned that GF's are rumored to cause memory loss for a reason.
I love all FF's, I don't follow any lame ass internet trends where it's "cool" to bash popular games because "you played them before they were cool". Who gives a shit. Regardless, virtually every FF save I had characters that had considerably more development than any character in FFVIII. Obviously not every character in every game was vital or interesting, but there was always at least one or two people who had turmoil or otherwise growth in the course of their respective game.
In summary, you're full of shit about character development in FFVIII, even thought it really didn't have anything to do with chocobos. Yes, racing the chocobos to get each their S-Rank was mind numbing, but the concept of chocobo farming/raising/racing is excellent, and if they made a game where that's all it was, it could be quality. Expand on the racing, make it a kart-type racer or whatever. expand on the raising/breeding part and you have a game.
I agree that considering a full game dedicated to chocobo breeding based solely on the content from VII would be dumb. That is why it would have many more features expanded upon the original idea, dur. It has potential goddamnit. It would have been a much better product than fucking FFX-2.
