In Japan they released a revised version of Ultimate G&G which took out the collection aspect and turned it into a straight action game with the traditional G&G 2-loop system. With the revisions, the game is just about as top notch quality as the other games in the series. If it weren't for it being a little too long (1 hour 30 minutes to clear once you know what you're doing) I'd probably say it's just as good as Ghouls & Ghosts.
Yeah it's too bad the US never got that revision, because it's really unnecessary to have the ring collection. It would be tolerable if they didn't have 5 or so for finding all the red chests. That's ludicrous, because you'll never find them all without a guide. It's impossible. If I walk down the dead-end tunnel that should trigger it. I shouldn't have to jump at the perfect spot.
I repurchased the game on PSN in part hoping for this (and to play it when I got my Go), but it's still the original release.

I know you probably don't want to buy it for a THIRD time, but if you really want the revised version it's on Japanese version of PSN for 1500 yen ($20 with current conversion rate). The game's name is "Goku Makaimura Kai"(極魔界村改). Just go to the PSP store, find the section which has UMD games and look under the マ symbol. It'll be there, and the only the "kai" version is on Japanese PSN. This is something that really SHOULD be added to the import section of the US/EU import store.
I spent so much time on Super Mario World. And that was before strategy guides, the Web, gaming magazine etc for me. Everything was new. I just about shit myself the first time a 'hidden road' opened up on the map.
I rather enjoyed Stealth Bastard - if you've played N or N+, you know the drill, though Stealth Bastard has a slower pace and more puzzles.
And it's free to download!
Thanks for the heads-up on this!
I spent the last two hours playing. I beat almost the entire second half the game. I spent 30 minutes on the last level before admitting defeat. They saw you coming, Josh. If anyone can kill it, you can.

Because of this thread I pulled out Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, and Yo Noid! and just had a blast reliving the platforming greats. (Ok, maybe Yo Noid! isn't considered a great, but I loved it.)

Never been big fan of Darkwing Duck. It always felt like the poor man's Mega Man. It is not bad game tho', and I can understand why kids loved it back in the day.
In the final version, they switched back to the original cave theme from Doki Doki Panic. Probably for better considering how weird this version of Underground theme was.
Maybe not the most high-profile game, but M.C. Kids was one of my favorite NES platformers. Unfortunately a tool-assisted speedrun is the best youtube video I could find of this game. The game is too often dismissed as a "crappy McDonalds game", despite being well-designed and clever.
ha, i actually HAVE played evvery game in the OP's image. But no way would I call Wonderboy in Monsterla a platformer. It's an action adventure game. If it's a platformer, then Zelda II is a platformer (protip: it's not).
Also, flashback was released after Another world, not before. There are a few other minor timeline problems with your image as well (like astal being before Earthworm Jim Special edition).
PC Genjin 2 (Bonk's revenge) predates the JPN release of mario world by 4 months.

I'd agree, but Wonderboy does have enough platform elements where I'd allow it, namely the water section outside Alsedo, the Ice Palace, and the Dark Castle. I believe "platformer" should mainly apply to games where the primary challenge comes from the navigation of platforms, which is why I'd still consider VVVVVV a platformer albeit one with an unusual jump. It's also why Mega Man is a platformer though it maintains an inventory like an adventure game.

Because it was hard to find specific release dates for some games, whole list is compiled by release year based on information I found from the net (Wikipedia, Mobygames). That Another World, however, is honest mistake that I didn't want to fix. I actually accidentally used Genesis release year for Another World, but because switching places was so annoying with tools I had, I decided to say "fuck it".
I'm a weirdo with this genre. I am terrible (terrible!) at 2D platformers, though I can do most of the ones Nintendo has released this gen. I still play them, but my true love is 3D platformers. For some reason they just click for me in a way that the 2D ones don't. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and yes, I even loved Sunshine. I was also a huge Spyro fan back before they went and ruined the series.
For some reason, despite being a lifelong PC gamer and a dedicated KBAM jockey in most genres, I simply must platform with a controller. Also, I tend to measure my enjoyment of a platformer by my FPS (that's "Fuck"s per second.) Yes, a high FPS is good.
Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.
I always hated Gex, he was up there with Bubsy as far as platforming mascots go for me.
Although I'm sort of a hypoctrite since I love Aero the Acrobat. :P
I don't have a particular fondness for Gex the creature. Really, it could have been anything as long as it had fire breath and freezing breath. I always liked that.

But I really loved the Bubsy games when I was younger. I wish they were a bit more lenient as far as one-hit deaths go and I wish they toned down the speed a bit but otherwise the entire thing was fairly solid, or so I thought.

You're confusing Wonderboy in MonsterLand (Aka MonsterWorld I) with Wonderboy In MonsterWorld (Aka MonsterWorld III). MonsterWorld indeed has more platforming (although I still wouldn't call it a platformer) but MonsterLand is very straight forward. The only real platforming in the game is in the dragon's castle (which became Nightmare Castle in MonsterWorld) during a bit where you have to jump from falling platforms. And due to it not being a platformer, the jumping controls are ill suited for this section.

I'm assuming you're only familiar with 3D Gex, which could be called the Bubsy of 3D platforming, but the original 2D 3DO Gex is awesome, one of my absolute favorite platformers. It's got a great difficulty curve (the later stages are very challenging), excellent graphics, and the voice overs are actually funny, unlike Bubsy. The voice clips in bubsy aren't funny at all ("Oh sure, blame the bubster" -- that doesn't even make sense without context) while a few voice clips in gex made me laugh (while swimming in the sewer, "I hope that was a candy bar").
Also, this thread is severely, severely lacking in The New Zealand Story. One of the most important platformers ever.

No, I've played the original Gex also. For some reason, it just never did anything for me.
I didn't really mind Gex 3D that much. I wouldn't say it was a top tier game, but it was alright. I always liked the spoofing other other genres/games thing that Gex did. I liked the Garfield Sega Genesis platformer for the same reason - I like games that bounce around being themes/genres.

I don't know why but I thought Gex was awesome back in the PSX/N64 days. I'm sure if I went back and played them today I'd find that they haven't aged well though.

yeah I hope there's a better picture DUE. so much awesome.

Well, it didn't die.
In fact, it's getting a full steam release in the next few months.

Definitely the platformer that I'm most looking forward to in the new year.
They're also adding more action stuff, which I hope turns out well.

Super Meat Boy.
So I'd say past year.
