I like my place well enough, especially not paying a water bill since they somehow screwed up the billing when my ex moved out

Travelling is a lot cheaper than most people think. Especially if you go somewhere cheap, like say China, it gets cheaper and cheaper (relatively speaking) than being at home. Heck, if I was out of a job, I'd probably find it would be cheaper to go stay in China for a few months off my savings than to stay in Norway.

Of course I'm not sure that would be the wisest option, but hey it's there.

I usually do a month-long trip every year, backpacking around somewhere. It's fantastic good fun.
Of course, you can do this because you're in Norway

US peeps are lucky to receive ten days off a year; not very conducive to travelling! It's also more expensive just to get to a foreign country (simply due to size/location of the US) than it is in Europe.

Since living here I've begun to understand why so few Americans hold passports...

    I don't think it's that hard.

I agree it's way easier to travel in Europe though.

Also most Americans dont even leave the state they were born in.

I'm always amazed when Americans don't have passports but when you think about it they don't need it to travel between states.

I always renew mine as soon as it expires.

I imagined I'd be visiting my parents every year, but so far I've only managed a trip back to the UK every 18 months, and that always uses up all of my annual holiday :( Still, my parents also take turns to visit me, so I do manage to see them at least a little more often than that.

Perhaps wages also have something to do with it? Earnings are pretty good along US coasts, but seem much lower in the central states; of course, the cost of living is much, much lower there, and I know it's possible to have a huge house and nice car and yet live very cheaply, but that means you appear richer than you are and probably don't actually have much disposable income for the most expensive things like flights.

  • M.D.M.D. and then what happens? Registered User regular
Could be wages and time off, I've always had a passport growing up so i'm just upset that more Americans dont travel as there are so many awesome places to visit. I still need to go to China, i'm jealous my buddy is there.

I need to get into school and get my apartment first though when I get back to the states. It's pretty cheap in SC too so im happy about that and I hope I can still travel with the change of living im about to do.

  • JansonJanson Registered User regular
I think what can be irritating is when people's minds are closed to the idea of travel, or they believe they can know about a country/foreign lands just by reading about it.

Of course, you don't have much of an idea what it is like to live somewhere else while on vacation, either, but at least you manage to experience some things for yourself.

I looked at flights to England in two weeks and they're €60. That's a night on the booze.

yea pretty much, sad it costs me something like €175 to go from Berlin to Bremen which is 3 hours away on train. But I just found that they have bus rides for €50 round trip that I wish I knew about sooner.

Wish I had some money left over from Christmas to send you some art for those walls, Mori/Jans.

  • JansonJanson Registered User regular
Ah, thanks Weaver, but really, we have a LOT of pictures! Just not put them up yet! :)

Also, our pictures are probably the best representation of what dorks we really are: two limited edition Mass Effect 2 prints, the sentry gun poster from TF2, two signed Sam & Max prints, two signed PBF prints, signed photo of the actor who played Wes Janson and signed photo of Misha Collins... and then three signed prints from a Canadian comic artists whose work I've never read - I just liked his art style! Hehe! Oh, and Mori got me two Hark a Vagrant! prints I need to frame, and then he has the signed Giant Bomb poster...

I do have a painting of hummingbirds by a Chinese artist! That's different!

Oh, cool! That is a lot of neat stuff.

I love the IKEA frames; great for the price, nice glass and good quality wood - I got some for the same price at Target but they had plastic which bends and distorts the pictures. :( Unfortunately, the prints we have left to frame are all completely incompatible sizes with the standard IKEA frames (in fact with any frames).

  • M.D.M.D. and then what happens? Registered User regular
Oh yea, I saw you post your place up on facebook and i was gonna say something there but I really like it Janson. I hope I can find an apartment just as nice, I especially hope I get some decent kitchen space.

Oh man a Diablo 3 poster would be sweeet.

Also @Janson don't forget we have the enormous Avengers banner that @DE?AD gave us!

  • JansonJanson Registered User regular
Thanks! Good luck with finding one! It helps if you're flexible (and also checking every day, as nice apartments tend to be snatched up!)

It's lots of things. The US is only bordered by Mexico and Canada, and until 9/11, you didn't need a passport to visit Canada. A lot of Europeans don't realize just how big the US actually is. It's not like Central Europe, where you can drive for a few hours and cross three national borders. With some states you can drive for 6 hours and st ill be in the same state. The size also means we have just about every conceivable climate. If you are in the UK, and you want to enjoy hot, sunny beaches, you have to go to Italy/south France. In the US, you drive to Florida. Want good skiing, Switzerland...or Colorado.

Then there's the issue with the pesky oceans. To get anywhere that isn't Mexico or Canada will probably involve a long overseas flight, which are not cheap in the least. Combine that with most American's lack of paid vacations or vacations at all, and I'm not surprised most don't have passports.

I really enjoy the place I am at right now

right smack dab in downtown Ottawa

this is NOT the view from my apartment, but rather the view from our building - it has roof top access with a park area on top:

Woah, that is a high building!

Most apartment blocks around here are two-three stories at most. :)

It seems that most apartment blocks in Ottawa are all high-rise

I have come across some low and mid rises, but they are few and far between

    I really do like it

We are wayyyyyyyy smaller than Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, etc

But due to the fact that we are "Canada's capital" we attract the attention of all the big name shit anyways

Just last night me and the gf went to see the Blue Man Group perform at the National Arts Centre, it was amazing

If I remember correct, it's something like 15% of people don't leave the state that they were born in. Though, I can't find a solid figure on that at the moment.

    I hate flying

Which I know is odd considering I have no issue driving and how much more unsafe that is

It's not the lack of control either, I don't give two shits about using the bus

But I know I am being a dumb baby so I face it like a MAN and distract myself with pokemon whilst gritting my teeth for the duration

    cigarettes are a big one

    weed, drinking

when he goes shopping he buys cheap cheap pasta, which is fine, but then he spends the money saved on frozen pizzas instead of fresh veggies
