This is the thread in which we talk about our fantasy baseball league, as well as baseball in general.
ATTN: Fantasy league managers. If any of you want to stop playing this season, Zen Vulgarity will take your team off your hands. Send him a PM, and if you work something out, let me know.
He's also considering starting a second league, so if any of you are interested in that, let him know.
I would be interested. I could also use some help on which bat I should keep to help defend last years fantasy championship in my local league. Jose Reyes, Ortiz, or Sizemore? Ortiz puts up MVP like numbers but is limited to DH status. Reyes is a SB machine, but seems to be a bit injury prone. Sizemore is great all around and might make "the leap" this year but there are lots of decent outfielders.
I plan on Reyes, but also steals is just one category. Homers help you in 3(HR, TB, RBI in our league). It'll kinda depend on what it looks like I can get with my first pick. If all the power bats are kept Ortiz will look better.

It depends on your league scoring but generally Reyes is the best player out of the bunch because of position scarcity and the relative scarcity of steals (each steal is worth about 1.5 HR since they're harder to come by). Ortiz had more HR, RBI, and TB but far, far fewer steals. Also, look at the differences between the top tier shortstops and the 2-3 tier ones. Ortiz does nothing to help your roster flexibility.
I'd rather fill my SS position and try to grab Travis Hafner in the 2-3 round, since Hafner is possibly a better overall hitter and should have a huge year.
I'm all filled up on leagues at the moment but I love talking fantasy anyway so you guys should keep posting What would the scoring be? Standard 5x5 or some fun SABR stuff? Roto or H2H? Playoffs or not?
Needs to be playoffs, because the bottom three or four players will quit by July, because this'll be an informal league. It's the only way to be fair in determining the winner.

Eh, ok. Playoff leagues tend to be a crapshoot due to playoff teams resting stars and random luck but if it'll turn out how you say, then I agree.
In one league, a dude obviously quit so we reassigned his team to a new manager.
Also, who will be commissioner? Will there be voting on trades? Transaction limits, etc? Lots of issues to discuss

I'd be commissioner unless someone else really needed it to be. Transaction limits tend to limit creativity. A 3 day waiver period will tend to keep people from just swapping out each day.
In a local league with buddies, a fifty cent tax on all transactions is pretty good. That way you have to think about it, and make sure it is worth it to you. then the winner gets all the money in the end. Doesn't work on internet leagues though.
We can have a running draft right here on the forums. Everyone signs up by next Wednesday. We'll randomly generate a draft order, and then I'll manually enter the picks when we're done. That way everyone gets to actually pick. If we're not close to done by near the end of the month we'll start setting timelimits on how long you get to pick.
Live Draft using the Yahoo league itself will be TONS easier, in my opinion. That way a. it will be quicker
b. people that can't make it put in prerankings
Mmm, unless I'm mistaken, you should change the league type from "h2h" to "h2h points"(unsure how you do that, but pretty sure it's possible), then we can figure out what scoring system to use, for reference, here is the one my league used last year:
"Stat Categories: R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, CS, BB, K, IP, W, L, SHO, SV, ER, BB, K
Stat Modifiers: R (1), 1B (1), 2B (2), 3B (3), HR (4), RBI (1), SB (2), CS (-1), BB (1), K (-1), IP (1), W (10), L (-5), SHO (10), SV (5), ER (-1), BB (-1), K (1)"
Overall, h2h points, 2 divisions with 6 teams and top 2 qualify should be fine, IMO, but I'll play anything you guys agree on.

I prefer a category based system rather than points, because it forces you to diversify your team. You can hit 20 home runs in a week, but only get one win for it if your team doesn't also do a bunch of other stuff. Points based means the team with the best players wins, category based means the best constructed team wins.

Yahoo is probably the easiest? How many teams are we shooting for?
Any input?

One could argue for ortiz, but both are better than sizemore.
Is this a keeper league? If so, how come you can only keep one? All three are definite keepers.

Reyes.

I'll make the league this weekend, unless someone else wants to.
We just need to decide if we want to do roto or head to head.
A live draft would be ideal.

I think that'd work. Any thoughts on that?

Problem is I can't find an option for playoffs. Want to stick with head to head, or go roto?
