I noticed there wasn't a thread for this upcoming Capcom game, so I'll just take up the reins on that one. I'd make a big complicated OP, but considering the demo is out NOW and people might want to start playing it and talking about it, I'll try to make this short and sweet.

Take Bayonetta, add some Devil May Cry, with a pinch of Ninja Gaiden, some Shenmue (lots of quick time events), Kratos' rage +10%, and heavily spice with Asian Gods and mythology, and you have Asura's Wrath.

Alright now that the basic info is out of the way, DOWNLOAD the demo NAOW, and talk about it right here!

I was looking at that. Maybe I'll go d/l it on PS3. PlayStation Store Update already happened so I guess the demo is there, isn't it? Anyway, looks interesting.

    Got it downloading now.

Here's hoping that it's good. I've been keeping my eye on this for a while now.

I played the demo last night. I'm still thinking about how awesome it was. I thought Bayonetta pushed the boundaries for ridiculousness, but it's nothing compared to this. You do Episode 2 in the demo and go "Daaaaamn, that was nuts." Then you do episode 11 and your head explodes.

Somebody is claiming that the demo sucks harder than a hoover, and that he was actually able to put down his controller and the game just played itself through the QTEs as if he actually hit them. I call BS, anybody else wanna try just setting down their controller during a QTE and see if that actually happens?

I'm not sure how that would be worse then a game over if you missed them. Fucking QTEs anyway, they've always been nothing more than the illusion of interactivity while an over the top cutscenes plays.

If you want an example of how this game probably flows, play Naruto Ultimate Ninja 1 or 2. Combat QTE QTE QTE combat QTE.

I'm still interested though. I'll give the demo a shot.

It's gloriously over the top and I love the look of it, but it seems to be more QTE based than anything else and that's a massive turn off for me. If my character is doing something awesome, I want to watch him doing something awesome. I don't want to be concentrating on having to catch the next set of button presses. And I especially don't want to have to hammer the B button as hard as I can at regular intervals.

Looks like I'll be waiting for a hefty price drop on this one.

Let's be honest, QTEs are basically the only way to do some of the ridiculously over the top stuff you can do and still give yourself some level of control to it. I think it would improve a lot of if you games gave you QTE branches so you could kill bosses/do random awesome shit in different ways each time.

  • MaddocMaddoc I'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother? Registered User regular
I'm not going to totally bag on QTEs because they can enhance gameplay.

    See: Vanquish, Bayonetta

But this is like... a full on QTE game, and I thought we moved past that point a long time ago.

But again, I'll give episode 11 a try later, and give it another chance. Maybe Episode 5 is just the worst part of the game!

Yeah, there IS a point where you can have too much QTE but I felt games like God of War 2 handled it decently well. Haven't had the chance to play GoW3 (no PS3!) so I'm not sure if they kept the balance at all.

  • The_SpaniardThe_Spaniard It's never lupines Irvine, CaliforniaRegistered User regular
To those not liking all the QTEs think about it this way, these are boss fights, you know the things that break up entire levels worth of fighting regular enemies and fodder. So the full experience should be a lot better with the more spaced out QTE boss fight segments.

So, after doing both parts of the demo: This took no skill at all. Anyone who thinks this is mechanically better than Bayonetta, or even DMC1, probably never played either.

You know what? In Bayonetta you could do all this over the top stuff without QTEs. You hit counter/direction/attack/jump buttons in the right sequence with the right timing and you could dodge, parry, counter, grab weapons, counter-attack with the enemies own weapon, etc, all flawlessly within the flow of combat without needing to descend into the madness that is QTE.

Unless the game is 100% different than the demo. Unless this Demo was showing off everything they weren't going to do with the game, I can honestly say I'll never buy it and be happier for the experience. I was bored within the first two minutes and totally stunned by the fact that the entire thing devolved into nothing but repeating QTE sequences til my burst gauge was full, hitting R2, and watching another sequence.

This is like God of War for people without real reflexes.

I don't like being needlessly negative/antagonistic in game threads, so I'll probably duck out after this.

But after watching chocobo play through the episode 11 segment, I have no urge to play through it myself. While it looks better than episode 5 was, that's not really saying much in the grand scheme of things.

Oh well, saved myself some money, because I was actually kind of excited about this with my minimal knowledge of the game prior, and I probably would have bought it if not for the demo.

I can understand people not liking QTE heavy games, I have to say that I moistened my pants when Dovrak's New World Symphony started playing during the second fight.

Yeah, based on the demo it's not blowing my mind.

As a quasi-anime action film however it is suitably GAR.

Well that was pants on head stupid. I mean, I like the art style. They really pulled off quite a bit with those cheap, low-res looking textures. But uh, the rest of that stuff? It was kinda shitty and I don't see how it's going to appeal to any market.

Capcom are going to have so many colossal bombs this year it's going to be awe inspiring. Dragon's Dogma (their most expensive game ever), RE Operation Raccoon City and Asura's Wrath are going to sell like 10 copies each.

    Dogma and OpRC look awesome.

This was always chancy at best (Considering how badly they are beating up DMC.) so this isn't exactly surprising.

  • Unco-ordinatedUnco-ordinated NZRegistered User regular
I didn't say Dragon's Dogma looked bad, I'm looking forward to seeing what the real DMC team can do (assuming the addition of the Lost Planet team doesn't bring down the quality). But it's going to bomb. That's not even me throwing guesses around, that's what Capcom think. They combined 2 or 3 of their big internal teams to make it, resulting in the most expensive project Capcom have ever developed and yet they never really seemed to have a plan for it.

And yeah, I forgot about DmC. It'll probably do better than the other 3 games (not that that'll be hard) but no way will it sell better than DMC4. Capcom's in for a rough year.

I personally love this over-the-top stuff. I kinda wish they would have a non-boss segment so I could really gauge the combat.

I get easily pulled into games, so just as I'm about to punch a sword longer than the diameter of the Earth and all of the sudden I get a "To Be Continued" splash, I was kinda disappointed. I really wanted to punch that sword.

I have a $50 BB card from Christmas that will go toward this game.

When the first "commercial break" section popped up, I realized that this is basically an interactive anime.

I saw nothing in the rest of the demo to change my mind. That stated, I was quite amused by it and laughed out loud at a few of the more ridiculous aspects.

I doubt I'll ever buy it. But I can see the appeal.

yeah I agree with the statement that I wish we had one boss and one normal gameplay segment to judge both

because I have a feeling that wasnt a super great representation of combat

    still stoked though

I'm surprised at how polarizing this game is.

Anyway, has anybody tried setting down the controller during QTE sequences and seeing if they win by default like that one guy said?
