Router issue, blocking a webpage? Help please!

Ok...I am at a loss here and I feel pretty dumbfounded about this. I recently asked for advice on domain name suggestions. I got the advice I needed and it was awesome. On Jan 22, 2012, I registered my domain name with 1and1.com. I didn't do anything with the site for a few days just because I was not ready to use it, but as of the yesterday, I am ready to get some stuff installed on the site.

Now, I can log in to the admin pages of 1and1. I can use their webspace explorer and look at the folder structure for both my site and the subdomain and even peruse the wordpress files installed in to the subdomain. I can access everything on their site in regards to my domain with no issues.

I did not try to access the webpage at home yesterday. I instead tried to set up Filezilla to connect through FTP. I went through their FAQ and found the correct settings for SFTP (I connect to a linux server) and they tell me to use port 22. I put in all of the correct information. The first TWO attempts to connect I got password failure issues. I couldn't remember exactly what the password is because like most people, I have a ton of passwords memorized and it could be one of 3 or 4 different passwords. After those two login failures, I went searching for my password. Found it and tried again. Now filezilla can not connect to the host. When I try to load up the webpage through a web browser, it sends a request and I get no page to load. Just the page that tells you to check the name and domain, etc etc.

When I was at school today and I had a few friends this afternoon through facebook (friends are in different cities and states) I could load the default page that 1and1 sets up for new domains. My friends could view it as well. I can not view it on home on my laptop or home computer. I even dug out my old notebook that I don't use anymore and fired it up. Same results.

At this point, I am thinking that it is something to do with my local router or maybe even my provider, but I can't imagine that they would do something. I have a Linksys WRT54G router that is around 6-8 years old. I have never had any issues with the router in the past. Any suggestions on what to look at or what to try and get this resolved? I'd really like to be able to work on and view my website while at home.

In short:
domain www.thetechfitz.com
will not load on any computer on home network -- WRT54G Linksys router
will load for other people outside of my home network

open up a command prompt and traceroute to www.thetechfitz.com

Provide us the IP address where the traceroute fails.

I've had that same Linksys router several times and have trashed them all because of really weird, strange, issues. I have a Belkin, a laughing stock of the industry, that lasted longer and worked better than Linksys.

Hhmmm....I don't see where it is failing on the tracert.

Okay. You definitely have a route to it. What happens if you try to access the webpage from your home PC via the IP address?

Are you using the hostname or the IP for FTP?

One thing it could be is that your ISP has not yet propagated your domain name in it's DNS records. Some ISPs take a long time to point domain names to the right IP/location/etc.

I tried by the IP and it did the same thing. So frustrating. I have tried to FTP by the host name and the IP and I had the same results for both. I am about to reset my router and see if that helps. Just a real pain in the ass to do that and then set up my network settings again. I don't have that many settings...just a real pain.

Protip: Cisco/Linksys makes some fantastic hardware and then shits the bed with their firmware. If possible get DDWRT (I think you can get it for a number of Belkin models as well). I also recommend changing your DNS Servers to either Google Public DNS or OpenDNS.

Furthermore, you could bypass DNS altogether by adding an entry to your hosts file (by default C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts). It's a text file (with no extension) in which you can manually designate names and IP address (there's an example in the file itself and plenty of resources on the web, including microsoft, that can tell you more).

Well...I just added it to my host file on my laptop (work/school computer) and it didn't change anything. I have not messed with the router yet because I am getting some work done and I need the internet to do it. I will look in to the DDWRT. Isn't that an open source firmware? I am trying to recall that from memory right now. I have used the google DNS servers in the past. I was just lazy after getting two new computers for christmas and did not set them up to use the google dns. I will get that changed and see if it helps as well.

Hah. I just proved for sure that it is my router. I searched for other wireless networks and out of the 7 around my house, one of them was unsecure. I hooked up to it and verified that I was online and tried to load the webpage in question. It loaded just fine....

Looks like I am going to work on my router sometime this weekend.

    Wait...ok....please riddle me this.

I hooked up to that unsecured network and I could get to the page just fine. So I thought to try out filezilla and see if it would connect. Once again, I had a password error. I was sure I had it right...tried it again and still an error. So I went out to 1and1 and verified all of my settings. All looked correct so I tried it again.

Now...filezilla won't find the host. Furthermore, my computer can no longer load that webpage through this unsecured network. I am extremely confused now.

    ok couple things.

1 it doesnt seem to be a dns issue, if it was a dns issue you wouldnt have been able to tracert to the website.
    which means
2 it probably isnt a router issue as well, unless you have some wierd manual configuration that intentionally routes that ip traffic back to you.
    3 this is mindbending

If you think it is your router, i would attempt to reset your router to factory default and configure from scratch, this should rule the router out as the problem.

Secondly I could have you use an alternate dns service. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Under your network connections, view adapter settings, right click the adapter you use to connect to the internet, manually configure ipv4 and add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your dns servers. This will rule out dns as an issue.

I recommend you do full virus scan on your computer to make sure your computer is not infected.

Also don't connect to unsecured wireless networks you don't have explicit permission to connect to. In most Western countries, that's a Federal crime.

All signs are pointing to FileZilla setting up some sort of a blacklist for his default internet options. I would try this:

    1. Flush the DNS on any computer affected by this issue. (Command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns)
    2. Reset the Winsock stack. (Command prompt: netsh winsock reset)
    3. Uninstall Filezilla.
    4. Reset Internet Explorer back to factory defaults. (Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab, Reset button at the bottom)
    5. Restart.

It's definitely related to Filezilla as the only two computers having the issue have had the timeout with the program. I'm willing to bet a large sum of money that a simple system restore to a few days ago would allow you to visit the site, as it would reverse whatever Filezilla has done.

    Edit: I can't spell.

At this point...I am really leaning towards some sort of really weird Filezilla issue. Although, I am not sure how filezilla would cause the same issue across multiple computers in the home. I tried to uninstall Filezilla and it said that it all uninstalled properly and required a reboot. So I rebooted and I noticed that the desktop shortcut was still there. I doubleclicked the icon and it actually loaded up filezilla?? I went in to the add/remove programs and it does not show up there. Although I do find it in the C:/windows/program files (x86) folder. I use the uninstall file in there and it acts like it uninstalls, but after a reboot it is still there. I have tried to manually delete the folder and it will not let me. It tells me that the folder or a file in the folder is in use by another program. Filezilla did an update within the last day or two as well...

But again, not sure how that would cause an issue with the other computers on my network. I think on Sunday I am going to have to reset my router and configure it again. I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials for my antivirus and I will run a full scan with it to be sure. I just scanned my laptop with MalwareBytes today and it found nothing. I don't surf porn or ghetto sites. I do school work, homework, work, email, facebook and some light browsing. I don't even play games on this laptop. I just got this laptop for christmas so a reboot to factory settings wouldn't be too terrible on me. Frustrating, but not too bad.

Pretty sure 1and1 is blocking based on IP due to failed password attempts?.

To test this, I just went to your website, saw the default 1and1 parked page, then tried to sftp to your website with a random username and password. After a few failed attempts it no longer connects to host and the website no longer loads.

You can probably find blocked IPs somewhere on the control panel to reset it, or you might have to email support. After that, make sure you have the right password before trying to log in.

Wow. That would make perfect sense. I checked around my admin settings and I can't seem to find anything concerning it, but I shot their tech support an email and I am asking them about it. Hope this works.

Thanks Daenris. That was the exact problem. I had to call them and their servers will block an IP after two failed attempts. The users have no way to go in and control what IP is being blocked. It is just blocked on a server basis and the tech support can go through the server log to see if your IP is being blocked. They claimed that it was only a 4 hour block, but I have been out for the past 3 or 4 days. I guess I learned my lesson on not failing my password with FTP access.

Thanks for all of the help everyone!
