Also Robert I wasn't directing the "don't bitch at me" at you. Some people flip out when a person admits to blocking ads.

But you know the way we actually are able to afford to things like the comic and the forums and everything else we make online is through advertising, right? It seems like as a fan of PA or of the forums or of anything else we do, you'd like to support us, no?

Sure but I'm kinda calm-grumpy. Sit me in front of network TV for an hour and I'll chew through my own foot to get away.

I buy a three day pass every year. I'd never click the links anyways. I do sometimes check out a link in the news post. I'm not advocating in any way that everyone should block ads. But this is kind of my happy place online. Ads, for whatever personality flaw I have that causes this, make me highly bitter. I'm not going to invite that into my happy place.

My only complaint about the ads is that while phone browsing, they always to be the last to load and will seize the page until they are finished.

Look, I'm not going to stop you from doing what you do. You're more than welcome to block ads. The Internet is our shared platform/playground, and my job is to work within its bounds rather than try to control it. But I just need to make sure you have all the information at hand here.

We try to actively add value to our community - whether that's through humor, education, or a show/event, and we do it in a way that isn't designed to maximize profits. We love what we do here, and money isn't a huge motivator for us... but we do need to make money to keep the lights on etc. I appreciate that you buy a 3-day pass, but keep in mind that 3-day pass pays for PAX to run. It's not really there to subsidize the rest of our operations. I suppose we could design/price it that way, but we don't.

I also wonder if folks really understand that blocking ads hurts our ability to generate revenue for the site - it especially messes with certain clients, because they end up paying for X ads, seeing less than that get delivered, and the come back to us pissed.

We're not some faceless corporation, and we really really like you guys. We've always been as straight up as possible, and I've always wondered what people who liked us back that blocked ads were thinking. People know that we gotta pay for bandwidth. We have overhead to cover, etc.

    It's an interesting discussion.

    Some guy.

Also weaver I dislike ads as well. How come you're allowed to not look at them and I have to. Cause, if we all stop looking then we'd be fucked!

  • WeaverWeaver Breakfast Witch Hashus BrowniusRegistered User regular
Blake, the closest thing I can think of right now to my reaction with ads is severe social anxiety. I thought I'd made a point that it's not just ads on PA or just ads on web pages. It's anything. I only brought it up because the questionnaire asked about how often you follow ads.

I would largely leave the internet if I couldn't block ads. I can't shop at stores that play ads over their loudspeakers. It's kind of a thing.

And hell, does PA have a donate button? I'll pay my due.

Throw me in the 'why isn't Rock Paper Shotgun' on that list group. I consider PA Report's the Cut to basically be the daily version of RPS's Sunday Papers. I'll be hellishly surprised if I don't start seeing overlap between the two. I used to also use Evil Avatar a bit, I guess, but cut them from my bookmarks a year or two back. But RPS and PA (plus PAR) are pretty much my only daily specialist news sites. Everything else is just links from there or something someone posts on the forums here.

Pretty sure you also need to whitelist googleadservices.com and doubleclick.net, which sort of defeats the point of having adblock.

You can also just disable adblock plus on all of Penny-Arcade. You just right click on the icon and disable on penny-arcade

ya know i agree with blake

since the thread left SE++, i have to make a conscious effort to go look at it, and so most of the time i don't

every once in a while i'll go and read through what i've missed, but that's not often

i guess in the long run it's better, because instead of looking at the thread, i'm actually going to the site and generating ad revenue i wouldn't have otherwise

Yeah, I actually have PA whitelisted in adblock but the above things I mentioned blocked in NoScript. Whoops.

That survey was damn long but considering the amount of content you guys have shovelled our way throughout the years and your service to society as a whole, if it helps, it was worth the time spent.

    Your forums still suck though.

It's not the longest severy I have ever filled out
I think the one for the pre xbox 360 online one was one of the longest and rather disapointing ones I have filled out.

It was werid to list what type of games I now play compared to the last time I was asked and what I said. TO see the difference in 10 years was rather odd

PA is probably the only site i have whitelisted on adblocking. i otherwise use a combination of Hosts file IP-level blocking and in-browser blocking.

too many ad networks serve up malware/spyware, inadvertently or not. i've seen too many malware infested computers to want that. PA is one of the few sites that i know actively vets their ads before they go live.

except for some of those goofy TV spots that play before PATV vids. i think there was a commercial for term life insurance on there at one point :P
really i just miss Jerry yelling "WELCOME TO PAX!" at an unreasonably loud volume

I don't run adblock, and will usually fill out surveys and such if it's for an organization I enjoy, because I know how the game is played.

But I never ever pay any attention to ads or popups or anything like that. Maybe it's because I remember the early days of internet advertising all too clearly, but I can pretty honestly say I've never been actually enticed to a product or service based on internet advertising.

Newsposts are another matter, though. The only form of advertising that really does work for me is word of mouth, so while the implicit endorsement from Mike and Jerry simply by virtue of being on the site likely works for many, I'm usually not going to give a damn unless they also elucidate their opinions on the front page or some other medium.

My game purchases from the last 8 years or so have come from the forums. I'll read articles and critiques from M&J, but by that time my mind is more or less made up, simply because I hear the positives and negatives from the users, and can go back and forth and get a better understanding that if I like X, will I like Y?

    It's an interesting discussion.

It's totally an interesting conversation to have, especially around here because the discourse is very direct between PA, usually yourself, and members of the community. I love that PA doesn't bother with having any real kind of public relations. It makes any attempt to actually be accommodating feel geniune. But I'm tempted to furrow my brow a bit when companies take this stance only to sort of imply an obligation on the part of the consumer to support said company vis a vis ad revenue, especially when vocalized dissent usually leads to the response "well if you don't like this FREE service, there's the door."

I'll be the first to say I don't have a solution that's going to make every single person happy. Within the past few years I've started making a much more concerted effort to support the companies and organizations I deem worthy of it, and to hold back on the ones I don't, and Penny Arcade is absolutely one of the former. I just don't like when the conversation becomes 'ads are where we get our money, otherwise you gotta pay, and you wouldn't want that, would you' *knocks over expensive vase*

Why? Why did this survey have to encompass the time period of the Steam Sale?! Everything's skewed as a result of that...

Oh, and my 174+ games on Steam -alone- doesn't help things. 200+ games, 1-2 games purchased a month, makes things look weird.
