Is there a reason that streaming software stops downloading while it's paused giving people like me with shitty internet no choice but to have the video constantly stop and buffer?

Good interview. I think Jeff explained his side of things pretty well, a side that I am not sure we've heard before.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt going forward. I'm still going to keep up with GB, they're a great and they're saying the right things that make me believe they'll continue to be.

To save them bandwidth costs. Youtube does it now. It only loads chunks at a time.
A lot of people, a not-insignificant number of users, will preload an entire video only to decide five seconds in not to bother watching, thus consuming an entire video's worth of bandwidth for the provider for no similar outcome for the user.
Alright. I thought that the Giant Bomb announcement was nuts, but holy shit what.

The guys from Tested are linking up with the guys from Mythbusters.
Naturally, some stuff on Tested is going to change. You can expect to see Jamie and Adam blogging alongside Norm and I about topics that excite all four of us--more than just the digital world. We’ll also be posting about things we love that we previously would have considered off-topic--science, art, nerd culture, the maker movement, Lego, and more. Of course, Norm and I will still be covering technology--phones, tablets, and PCs, plus all the things we love that you’ve come to expect from us, like making coffee and frying turkeys. We’ll be doing many more projects and how-to guides as well, and of course, we’ll still do old favorites like App of the Day. Podcast listeners, fear not. We’ll keep publishing This is Only a Test every Thursday afternoon.
Also, I sadly missed most of the Gerstmann/Davison livestream, unfortunately. Hoping it gets archived soon.

I've never been to Giant Bomb and read/watched/whatever any of their content so this news is fine with me.
i don't read much reviews, but they have entertaining video content. plus the site has really cool stuff on it, like an achievement tracker and the wiki which has a ton of info on thousands of games.

I'm glad you've posted here to let us know? I guess?
Anyway, the Tested thing is bananas and I think I have the opposite reaction with them. It sounds like they are just expanding their focus so they can pretty much talk about whatever, and honestly that's a good thing. I don't care what's "on-topic". If Will or Norm find something cool they want to talk about, I want to hear about it. And now I will, on the website, as opposed to only on the fake-outtakes part of their podcast.
I might be being naive but why didn't the Giant Bomb crew turn to their fans and explain the situation to them frankly? They could have explained that they need more subscriptions or they could no longer remain independent.
Sounds crazy, but considering the massive success of the Idle Thumbs kickstarter you have to wonder.

I really enjoy the Bombcast, especially after they got over that whole energy drink review thing they used to spend like an hour on every time. Listening to them argue with each other about GOTY 2011 was especially entertaining.
So long as that doesn't change much, I'm cool with this. Gerstmann has proven before that he's willing to walk away from bullshit, so I'm not really worried.

They basically did with their subscription system, but that was only keeping them going month to month. The site's too big to survive off a kickstarter.

Back when they started subscriptions in the first place, this was exactly what they said. I think people would have thought it a little scummy for them to do the same thing again.
There's also the possibility that they really don't want to beg their fans for money every time they are in financial trouble, and instead want to solve the problem in a real way.
plus i mean, i doubt CBS interactive want to take that kind of PR blow that would result if they fucked with the GB crew or the site's content. they already dealt with the shitstorm that followed jeff's firing from gamespot, and a few people lost their jobs because of it. if you didn't watch the livestream from earlier check it out because it eased my fears, showed that giant bomb wouldn't change suddenly, or ever.
i think it's easy to cast doubt because of the history there, but like jeff said he loved working there. the situation was caused by management not understanding how review sites work (that if you review a game poorly, you could lose out on advertising dollars from that company). i doubt any situation will arise like this again (atleast between these entities, could happen elsewhere), because both parties are much more aware of the industry they are in.
It's hard not to be little cynical about this, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. As long as they can maintain their identity then I'm all for it.
I still don't fully understand what this relationship actually means. Like, why CBS would buy giantbomb. I'm guessing that there will be some cross promotion, its unavoidable. I will see some GS dude in a quicklook, say "he's pretty funny!", then proceed to see what he's done on GS.
Either way it looks like they had some options, and went with the one that made the most sense. I wouldent mind some talk on the podcast on why this was necessary/why gamespot/what other options did they have.

I am already aware of On the Spot, when I was not before
I trust Gerstmann completely. I think this move is going to be fine.
I feel awful for Rorie, however. It should have been you, Alex. It should have been you.
I do honestly wonder why CBSi would want to buy Giant Bomb when they already have Gamespot, and then just let the two competing sites continue to operate as normal.
It might just be cynicism, but I have to imagine that one or both of the sites is going to have to change or go away.
If I'm being optimistic, I want to say it'll be Gamespot.com that slowly is faded out, because the name is tarnished in my mind. In fact, though I had no real attachment or connection to Jeff back in those days, I quit going to Gamespot after the way they treated him on principle.

They also own GameFAQs and Metacritic. That's four different gaming related websites, all doing different things. Variety is a good thing to have and I'd imagine the people behind this realize that.

The impression I got as to why GB is going over to CBS is because they don't have any "business" dudes. Without business dudes they never figured out how to make money on the internet, specifically in the case of video games. I imagine the CBS connections with ad companies and experience with gamespot would be substantial in helping GB's revenue increase.

This gamebiz interview with Jeff and John is a good read:
It is, quite literally, the craziest... Back in '07, when I got fired, I've always described it as the craziest thing that ever happened to me; this is a very close second. It's something we kind of joked about back in early 2008: "You know, you realize we're just going to build the site and sell it back to those guys?" "Ah, that'll never happen!" And here we are.

I don't see why this is a cause for concern. A lot of the Giant Bomb dudes left GameSpot over Gerstmanngate, I trust their sense of integrity to not walk into the same bullshit again. They've got a proven editorial track record. If anything, Giant Bomb now has more of a funding safety net, so good for them.

I actually feel a little weirder about Tested's new branding. I mean, I fully understand putting the Mythbusters guys right in there, but it still feels off. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Those two are pretty different beasts compared to GB and GS. I'm not saying GB and GS are the same (they aren't), but they have a lot more overlap than the other two do.
I was stunned by the news, but I am glad that my favorite guys (Vinnie, Dave, and Drew) are sticking with the GB guys.
I think JD at GS realized though that his site was terrible. He even downplayed their podcast. This brings some savvy and swagger back to a terrible website.
On Screened, well, I will be honest. Matt is terrible. He mails it in, he is slightly racist/stupid, and his insights are useless. Once Alex started to step back, I unsubscribed from the podcast and stopped reading the site. I have zero sympathy.

The gamebiz article linked above gave me the impression that Davison sees GB to be more of a media/personality/future of games journalism website, whereas GS is more about posting every new screenshot and trailer and that general all-encompassing coverage. It makes sense. Instead of trying to build a new trusted brand, use GB as the blogging/opinion editorial arm, while GS can function as straight news/press release rewriters.
GiantBomb always kinda reminded me of Tech TV's old show, The Screen Savers. Sad to see it bought out.
You mean like what happened to The Screen Savers? Only Leo Laporte HAS a head for business?
Well, unfortunately, I think what happened to the screen savers will also happen to Giant Bomb. But I was speaking more in terms of tone and style. Not to be a downer, but I never really went to their site, I kinda felt like Darmak up there in that the site didn't really appeal to me. But at the same time, it had a culture and an audience that it did appeal to, just like the screen savers. Plus it had that whole "close, personal interaction by nerds for nerds" sort of feel that screen savers had, and I can dig that. Personally, the only webvideo I watch related to gaming is AVGN, and the occasional GT Review (or really, my first choice is a Longplay, not let's play, on Youtube).
It's just sad to see something personal being taken by a corporate giant. I think it's inevitable that Giant Bomb will lose at least some of what makes it special to certain people. Look at what happened to the testers - the entire site has basically removed references to the original owners, with now the mythbuster guys taking the entire site (and changing the scope).
Actually, what's happening to the Testers kinda reminds me of what happened to G4's only good show - Icons. Once G4 restructured, they went away from telling the stories behind the creation of companies, game series, and parts of the industry, they just started doing behind-the-music style episodes on everything from teen pop celebrities to fucking nike. They totally abandoned gaming.
