You know, I think as far as next gen goes, theres one thing we can all agree on.
The 'greatest hits' boxes need to not look like ass. The yellow of gamecube, red of Ps2, or the very worst, green of Ps, looked like crap. I vote more of a metallic blue.
The 360 Platinum Hits look like flea market bootlegs.

Greatest hits boxes are terrible. What drives me nuts the most is when they change the color of the spine so it won't match with other cases in a collection. Personally I think they should stop changing the box altogether - put a sticker on the plastic wrap to draw attention at the store and be done with it.

in all honesty, i wont buy a used game if the only case they have is players choice.
They should doubleshot mold Greatest Hits boxes with hot pink and lime green and add one of those little sound things that come in dumb cards so that the box makes a farting sound every time you open it. Also, they should occasionally misspell it as Greatest Shits on the back (where you won't notice it until its too late).
The ugly is to punish you for not buying it earlier.
So true. I actually never minded the GC yellow, though.
On the plus side, I keep all of my games in a CD binder, so I'd buy all of my games with Pepto-Bismol pink packaging and plastered with pictures of Tingle if it meant I saved a couple of bucks on 'em.

That would suck for people that want first run prints and other collectors.
I'm all for different boxes (they don't have to suck though), it helps set market values. It gives those willing to pay the collectors item, and people who just want the game something cheap.
It's just a shame they tend to pick some obnoxious color to state "greatest hits"
The boxes of the US "Players Choice" Gamecube games I've got aren't too bad. The yellow strip is pretty subtle, and the graphics on the spine were left intact.
In comparison, the Australian boxes are hideous. They have a gold band running around the whole front of the box. The worst part is that the spines are totally gold on all Aussie "Players Choice" games, making their blandness stand-out on my bookshelf, mocking me for being such a cheapass.

Meh, I agree that player's choice boxart are hideous but if it mean I can spend $20 on a game rather than $50 then it's fine by me. also:
Ah, ok then. Like I said, down here we got silver themed slips, and silver cases. Looks good, but I arrange them away from my other GC games cos of the different look.

Anyway, Nintendo did away with the Best Of Player's Greatest Platinum Choice Hits All Stars crap with the DS (SM64DS, among others, dropped to $20 without changing the boxart), so I assume they will with the Wii as well.

They'll get around to it, eventually. Just around last year they finally started a Player's Choice line for GBA.

Eh, the GBA is an old, Yamiuchi-era system. Doesn't count.
All they did was add a yellow bar. And you can replace the insert from the cover project at Snackbar-Games.
I really don't understand what the big deal is. It's not like they shortened the game along with slashing the price.
The point is, why make it ugly, if you can make it good.
My point is that it's not ugly. You want ugly, look at the Xbox's Platinum Hits. They tastefully added a way to show you that this game has a reduced price without having to look at the price tag.
It's not like it's sparkly or bright pink or anything.
It's just like in CCGs, guys. The less collectible, cheaper version must be distinguished from the limited version. And, since collector's would be outraged otherwise, it must look at least somewhat worse. In CCGs, that usually means a white border instead of a black one.
Same concept. You want the pretty, you pay the money.

Actually I just buy the used version instead. So essentially by making the boxes look like ass, they're losing money from me, and gamestop is getting the money instead.

The PAL cases actually are more nicely constructed.
The case for my US version of Resident Evil 4 was slightly damaged during shipping, and one of the discs was nearly impossible to get out as a result. I had to actually mangle the case a bit to get it to release. In contrast, the PAL cases are much more sturdily constructed, with a nice push-to-release system.
Maybe that's why we pay 50-75% more. For better plastic cases.

yeah, its bad. i've noticed the 360's in particular is pretty bad too.
Best pic I could find in 2 minutes -

Cos down here (Aussie) the GC players chice used silver cases with silver around the edges and down the spine and whatnot.
AAAAH! MY EYES! DE GOGGLES, DEY DO NUTTING!
I've actually seen one of those on The Cover Project. It didn't look all that bad.
Also, the GCN logo on the spine (usually black) is yellow on our Player's Choice cases.
All the differences are on the insert, which can be easily reprinted and slipped into the case.

Maybe I'm just less picky that you guys.

Yep. PAL gamers definitely have the worst boxes. Look at that spine.

Eh. I'm a much bigger fan of the "game shot" NES boxes.
