And how, exactly, is it Bethesda's fault for releasing Skyrim on the PS3 when they did, when work on the Dawnguard DLC was likely not far from just being started on?
What actual reason do you have to legitimize your attitude towards Bethesda over this, is what I'm trying to get at. As the article says, they are working with Sony on resolving the issue. And I don't think you can say that they don't care about getting it to work on the PS3, because if they don't get it on the PS3 they can't get people on the PS3 to give them money for it.
I suspect that for Skyrim PS3 owners that it's just another thing that they alone have to deal with, like the months of practically game-ending performance issues that took ages to get fixed.
Plus, if Bethsoft has to go through so many hoops just to get the DLC working on the PS3 period, I could imagine that the final product could potentially have issues the other two platforms don't have to deal with as well.

And it's lost money for Bethesda, because they've clearly had to pay the people who are trying to make it work on the PS3. If they can't manage to make it play nice with the PS3's hardware (which is believable), then that's wasted time, effort and money that could've been spent on something that would give a return. So, yeah, conspiracy talk needs to go right out the window before this even starts.

If there's any fault to be assigned here it would be Sony for having a complicated architecture for PS3 development. But even then, sometimes shit doesn't work right. It's better that the fault is found before the product is sold instead of after. Then people can get all pissed off. But for now, it's a delayed release until further notice.
I will vouche for the competency behind the MGS PC port.
I'm actually craving information on this new Metal Gear. In typical fashion, I thought it's neat another one is being made, but I haven't been "wow'd" by the series for some time. Until I read the "open world" note. Is it actually open-world (even in the confines of a city / village)? Is it meant to compete with the likes of Deus Ex and Watch Dogs? Is this Konami stepping back into the realm of being a colossal video game developer, rather than a fledgling one?
This is a good comparison that you've unintentionally made.
If it's open world a la Deus Ex then I'm all over that.
Okay, can't say I ever saw this one coming - Guild Wars 2 is suspending their digital sales because the game servers have been getting overloaded and it's hampering in-game performance.
“Ensuring the best possible play experience for our fans is our highest priority. We’ve said before that we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences. We have now reached that point,” the developer said on the Guild Wars 2 Facebook Page.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but anyone who wants to play can get the game from any hundreds of other sources. This just seems like an easy way for them to barely lose sales, if any, and say "look how much we care."

They make less money from sales that come from other sources. In a game with no subs, this isn't money they'll necessarily make back.
Valve has begun banning Steam members who create fake projects on the company's just-launched Steam Greenlight service.
Anyone is able to add their game project to the platform, which seeks to find the next must-have Steam launches.
But that's entirely the problem: create a platform where anyone can submit anything, and quickly you'll have people testing its limits.
Those caught creating fake entries face a week's ban from Steam's community services. How effective this is can be judged by a quick scan of the Greenlight front page.
"I've already seen just in the last HOUR: two entries for Mass Effect 3, five various entries for Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead '3', Command and Conquer 1, every single Need for Speed game," one Steam user reported.
"That's not including patently offensive games that make fun of Africans, Indians, various pro/anti American games [and] a game about 9/11".
"Best WTC Plane Simulator" was just one of the games to be removed in the service's first full day of operation.
Greenlight initially launched with 30 projects. There are now around 590, although that number appears to fluctuate as more are added and troll entries are removed.
As of writing, the homepage is randomly showing a German Red Dead Redemption project page, and an entry almost-entirely comprised of one Russian teen's face.

They know exactly how many boxes are out there, and can plan for that known quantity plus what they've already sold digitally. MUCH easier to get running against that than against "how many players? WHO KNOWS?!" That was part of the D3 headache, they had absolutely no way to plan ahead other than via estimate for player concurrency. With boxes, you at least have a 100% max worst case.

I remain convinced that Steam Greenlight is just Valve's way of shouting "You see this shit we have to put with? How do YOU like it, smartarse?" at users who complain about some game or other not being on Steam.
This morning we announced that Paragon Studios will be taking to the skies of City of Heroes for the last time.
In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world's first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks.
The team here at Paragon deserves special praise for all that we have accomplished over the last 5+ years. These developers are some of the most creative and talented people in the gaming industry. By now, we've all been given this news internally, but to anyone who may be reading this message after the fact; know that your hard work and dedication has not gone unappreciated or unnoticed. To any potential studios looking to grow your team; hire these people. You won't regret it.
To our Community,
Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. You've been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldn't have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Don't dwell on the "how" or the "why", but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team.
Thank you, and I'll see you in the skies, one last time.
That's weird, I wouldn't have expected them to shut the game down but to just go into lockdown. I guess the money they were making was less than they needed for upkeep so that wouldn't be a possiblity.
CoH went free to play last year, right? I think this is the first time I've heard about a MMO going FtP and still going tits up. Bummer.
I mentioned this in a comic thread, but I'll say it again. I wasn't a fan of the gameplay in CoH, but out of the three superhero MMO's I played, it's the one that seemed to have the most passion and heart behind it.
Apparently CoH was actually still making a profit while other games like Aion were losing millions upon millions. NCSoft's official statement was that CoH "no longer fits in the long-term goals of the company."
I suspect that it's them further moving away from Western games. Guild Wars 2 will keep on trucking, but I expect GW1 to be shut down by 2014 and the upcoming WildStar is probably on the thinnest of ice.

Game itself looks great, but I'm still not convinced about the controller bits. I liked all the things they did with it, but I can't help but feel like it'd get old after a while. It's grabbing my interest a lot more than Wii footage did though, that's for sure.

Why not spin it off, then? I assume that the IP is probably nearly worthless, while someone else might want the game itself.

People who preordered Ni No Kuni - Wizard's Edition through Namco Bandai just got an email, titled "Namco Bandai Games America - Preorder Release Date Change"
It reads
Thank you for ordering on Namco Bandai Games America. The release date for the preorder product has changed. The product listed below will now be available on September 4, 2012.
edit: And an hour later, we got another email with a correction. Back to January 22, 2013.
So, Wizardry Online is about to go into beta. And apparently Sony (via SOE) got their hands on it, which bodes well I think -- the previous US Company that had it had just announced closing 2 FtP MMOs they brought over.
The new Final Fantasy iOS game is $29. This is actually FAR cheaper than I pegged it at -- if you do the numbers it cost like $40-50 in Japan, spread across 13 months. Still, in a world of $0.99 "games", it stands out.
Square has this tendency where they tend to go by retail prices for console games, and then depending on the platform it's releasing on, they add or subtract 10-20 bucks. A PS360 game tends to get hit by the tax and end up somewhere around 60-70 bucks when other games are 50-60, and on iOS they subtract 10-20 bucks from the price they would've sold it for on a dedicated portable system (40-50 gets dropped to 20-30).
I guess they figure it's a simpler setup that way than maintaining server farms for F2P games with tons of in-app purchase content, but still... Those guys are definitely trying to headbutt the trend.
Alright and in this next scene all the animals have AIDS.
Dimensions also has optional music DLC on top of the $29 for the full game too. I don't know what it is in your dollars but it's a pretty hefty extra chunk.

Yeah, it's a pretty developed setting and universe they've created. The game was indeed making them money still. So the long-term goal is "moving away from Western games"? That's pretty vague.
I'm a little staggered by this news, because I've sunk some money into CoH. It's the first "game is shutting down" news I've had to take for a game I actually played a lot of.
And if the game was released on the DS, it would have been more or less the same price (most likely 39.99, but the point is the same) and nobody would have batted an eye. I know the market and the platform and everything does have an obvious effect and all, but it's still worth pointing out.
As far as what the price means in general... I'm probably going to use the wrong word and piss some people off. But if the whole phone handheld market wants to be a legitimate threat to the traditional systems, then it's eventually going to need some legitimate games at legitimate price points. I do not mean this to say that the .99c games aren't "real games" or anything. They absolutely are. What I mean is that there's still a world of difference between those .99c minis and a Mario or Pokemon game. At some point, you're going to have to start looking into putting those types of games out, and you're going to have to charge a lot more than a buck for them. If the market accepts them, then maybe we can break out the harbinger's trumpet for traditional handhelds. If not, then they still have a place in the world for now.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
People keep comparing Dimensions to like a DS game or something... it has the length, the content, of a game that could fit on a dedicated portable but I personally don't think it's directly comparable. It's an incompetent port of an older phone game. I mean it looks a bit better in the flesh than it does in screenshots, but the graphics are still really below par, especially given who it's coming from, I'm not especially enamoured with the sound. The virtual d-pad is horrible, with a massive dead zone, I find it awkward to control generally. It's not like they ported this game and they totally knocked it out of the park and now they want to slap an appropriate price-tag on it. They're charging full-whack for a creatively-weak, low-budget port that feels like it's been ruined in the transition to its new format. They're not charging a high price for quality, they're charging a high price seeming only for the brand.
Dimensions WILL be re-released on a console in 1-3 years. It'll be standard price. It'll probably have an extra chapter and an extra bonus dungeon, to boot. Probably with bosses from Final Fantasy 5 and 6 as well.
I'm just kinda ticked off cause my iPod ("Gen 3" 8 gig, which is really a Gen 2) won't run it. Not sure if it's iPad only, or if I need to upgrade to 5th Gen iPod next month when they're released.
