Question since the whole 4x thing is being discussed. Conceptually I like the idea, in practice I've played very few 4x games. One of the ones I did put some time into back in the day was Galactic Civilizations II.
Question is, where would that fit into the list of 4x games? I thought it was pretty fun but a limited frame of reference will do that to you. Thoughts?
It's one of the best ones ever made, and many consider it THE best 4x ever made
If you're into it, you'll feel right at home with Endless Space. It feels like a spiritual successor to Master of Orion and GalCiv. Highly recommended.
w000000t! After complaining about the difficulty wall in BoI:WotL yesterday, I was finally able to get a decent build going and eventually beat the DLC version of the game. Take that Mr. McMillen. That game is so damn hard, but so satisfying once you finally get your chance to flip off your monitor as the credits roll in defeat.
While Endless Space merits its status as the new turn-based 4X hotness, GalCiv II remains one of my favorite sci-fi 4X games without the words "Alpha Centauri" in the title.

GalCiv 2 is generally viewed as a good 4x game. Its expansions added a lot.
I really enjoy Sword of the Stars. Turn based empire building with Real Time combat. Looks good too.
However, as much as I wanted the sequel to be the next big thing, it landed with a dull thud. Beware the sequel unless you can find someone who owns it and can speak to if it has been improved since its busted, broken release.

Cool, I have impeccable taste for liking it then! :P
In that case, i'll offer up that the GalCiv2 Ultimate edition is on sale on Steam for those looking for other 4x games to play.
It also featured a pretty extensive ship building system, and i'd spend hours trying to cram cannons and engines and spoilers and chrome rims on ships and crap now I want to play it again.
I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.

I realize it just came out, but I'm a tad bummed ES hasn't given us a little bit of the Summer Sale goodness. Surprised? No, just bummed.

Oh holy crap. High praise indeed. I had been watching that one somewhat but now you just pushed it higher in my attention span. My wallet curses you.

But it's super, SUPER good. The battle system is something that takes getting used to (it's basically rock-paper-scissors with playing cards), but everything else is ACES. UI, skill trees, controls, everything's super sleek.

Hey, didn't the wishlist used to let you see the price right next to the game? Because right now it just has a link to the game's store page where the price should be.

I was having this problem yesterday, changing the sort fixed it but that fix doesn't seem to be working today.

Civilization is, in fact, the quintessential 4X game.

I preferred SMAC, but to each his own.

The universe is wondering why you haven't called back lately. And why you don't want to move in with it.
The universe also like you to meet its parents.
