I heard my name and got here as quick as I could. (New participant in summer sales. Apologies for the intrusion.)
I'll just put this out here: STALKER is a life-changer, for the better. Or maybe it's a just a really good, atmospheric action/adventure and a window into the corner of the world not often featured in Manshooter of the Week. Core narrative's problematic and scripting issues abound, especially in the earlier games, but if you can swallow tech troubles for the sake of adventure - sometimes eerie, sometimes beautiful, sometimes frantic, sometimes just magical - then you won't find too many better places to throw $dailydealmoney.
As an aside, Monger's dead on re: Chantelise. I bought both it and Fortune Summoners sight unseen just because of how much I loved Recettear, and I was not let down.
So I already have and have thoroughly enjoyed Recettear, so would anyone recommend either Chantelise or Fortune Summoners?
I haven't played Fortune Summoners yet, but for anyone that's curious about Chantelise:
I spent a lot more time with it than I thought I would, given that it doesn't have any of the wrapper that Recettear does. It's a roguelike/dungeon crawler that's (very loosely) in the format of something like Demon's Souls. It's not anywhere near as deep or difficult as a Demon's Souls, but it's a lot harder than something so cutesy has any right to be. You have a hub world and a set of dungeons that unlock as you progress. Each dungeon is a series of ten or so rooms followed by a boss battle, and you've got to get through it in a single life. Dying bumps you back to the hub world, but you don't lose anything. Your inventory works more or less like Recettear's dungeon crawling (though your equip slots are universal), and you can buy permanent health upgrades at the item shop. The thing that makes it sort of unique is the magic system. You pick up gems from enemies and the environment, which serve as single use spells. Red gem is fire, blue gem is ice, that sort of thing. You can carry six of them, and the one you cast is always the most recent one you've picked up. If you've got got multiple of the same color stacked next to each other, you can charge cast to do higher tier magic. 3 blue gems is a heal, IIRC. 2 yellow is a shield. It's largely a game of managing your gem stack to have the correct magic available in any given situation. There's also a treasure chest hidden in every room of every dungeon with unique loot, like crystals that change your weapon's attack pattern or boots that let you glide, and finding them is varying levels of obtuse.
It also has a fishing minigame, because of course it does.
The writing is every bit as good as Recettear. Like, I hate cuteness in all its forms, anime cuteness prime among them, but it's so goddamn charming that I actually enjoyed both of those games. Would totally drop the $2.50 on it if it sounds interesting.
Sold.
I'd almost resisted but damn, that sounds like my kind of thing. More so than Recettear (which I do really like).
Huh. I didn't get Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl on Steam. I must have bought it for cheap at retail.
How good is Call of Pripyat?
Lots (self included) regard it as the best of the Stalker Franchise.
Do you like STALKER? If yes, buy CoP right now. If no, buy CoP right now and then reevaluate your opinion. I actually prefer modded SoC, but it's by far the best vanilla game.
Can this be run un-modded out of the gate? Is it spooky? Does it also have gamepad support?
SoC lacked two of these three things, which has caused me to put it off.
Yes. Yes. No.
You're not going to play a STALKER game with a gamepad. That's just not how those games work. The closest you'll get is Metro 2033, which is, as far as I know, gamepad friendly.
Yeah, Stalker uses something like 30 keys on the keyboard, mouse not included no way you're gonna get it to work with a gamepad.

Yeah he sold me on it too. Now I own all the games in the pack.
I wish Steam would show me a record of past gifts. I've thrown out some random gifts and don't want to repeat myself. I can see gifts that I've bought but not who they went to. I see gifts I have not sent. I see gifts I have sent that have not been redeemed. I don't see redeemed gifts anywhere.
You basically need a wiki to find 90% of the hidden chests in Chantelise. An example of how silly it is:
One map requires you to run continuously around the second floor like you're running a lap around it. After you run a complete map the chest will spawn. There is an NPC in town that provides hilariously vague hints for some hidden chests. That's about it.
So I'm on the fence about Sins of a Solar Empire. I'm not typically into deep strategy stuff, but I always love the look of anything set in space. Is it likely that I'll get anything out of Trinity for 5 bucks? I really can't see myself dropping $30 on Rebellion.

That's... odd. You used to be able to see that back when "Manage Gifts..." was a window in Steam instead of a webpage.

It's this sorta 4X-RTS hybrid thing with the ability to have really big worlds (I remember using the orbital nuker to fire at another system and it taking like an hour to reach.) I'd say in multiplayer it's easily worth that, but SP only I couldn't tell you.

Sins isn't really deep strategy. It's not as 4x as an actual 4x game. It's a much more "lite" version; but it's deeper than your typical RTS.
I'm not really into that kind of stuff either; Homeworld is about as "advanced" of an RTS as I enjoy (and god did I enjoy it); but I still loved Sins.
There's no real campaign, it's just, pick a map (or create a randomly made one; usually not too good), and play. The story exists, but it's not told in the gameplay. So that effects some peoples views.
But other than that there's a lot of game to be played, and it can be quite fun. There's far worse things you can do with $5.
Ok, time for some giveaways! It's mid-sale and they're starting to taper! This is unacceptable!
First, someone gifted me a copy and I enjoyed it enough to buy another:
Second, I received this as a gift as well, but got two copies, so paying it forward:
Third, I grabbed a 4-pack and want to see more folks shooting many robots!

Okay well that's good to know. I doubt I'll get much multi going so it might be safe to skip this for now. I might look into Sins again once Rebellion drops further.

@Fig-D saw my rage on the previous page and decided to assuage me with something I gauge could never be upstage...d:
A gift copy of Dead Space 2!
You are truly a gentleman among thieves and cutthroats, sir.
Er, stupid question: Is there a special way you have to claim a steamgift win? I've never won one before, so I have no clue. It says I won but I never got anything. I was a little worried that I was breaking some gentleman's etiquette by asking about this, so I hope I haven't made an unclassy faux pas. <<;
First place goes to @heenato who slipped in at the last moment (seriously, like 6 minutes before I closed the contest) with Doom 2 on May 23rd, 2010!
Second place goes to @CheesecakeRecipe who was also a late entry. He's getting Fallout 3 GOTY with a WGD of May 28th, 2010!
Third place is @DudemanX with Blur, placed on his wishlist on June 6th, 2010.
I'm pretty sure all three of these winners submitted their entries today. Which makes me wonder if I should have extended it, but OH WELL!
Anyway, that barely pushed me past $30, so I gave prizes to @Masume and @21stCentury as well, who had WGDs of July 3rd and July 10th, 2010, respectively. Curiously enough, they both wanted the same game, Space Rangers 2: Reboot.
At this point, I need to tell you a little bit of a story. You see, as of this morning, Masume and 21stCentury held the two earliest WGDs. Then, at 3rd place, was a goddamn 7-way tie. Apparently November 24th, 2010 was when Steam announced their big wishlist giveaway sweepstakes for the Thanksgiving sale of that year. I would have been perfectly willing to give out prizes to everybody involved in the tie, except that the total cost for those seven games was nearly $120!! That's twelve times the combined value of the at-the-time first and second place entries! I was agonizing over it because of the tremendous disparity; after all I had promised that if the first three winning games didn't cost at least $50 I would keep going.
Fortunately, heenato, Cheesecake, and Dudeman saved the day for me at the last minute. However, since I technically didn't hit $50, in honor of the emotional turmoil you all caused me, I've added all of those people to my Steam friends list (specifically @Professor_Snugglesworth@Sir_Carcass@HiT_BiT@ToyD@MoosehatIV@Pharezon@Vegan ) and I'll do my level best to get you at least one game off your wishlist before the sale is over.
The five winners have been added to my friends list as well; please accept my requests so I can more easily send you your gifts!
Thanks to everybody who participated! I got almost 25 entries, and I was honestly kind of surprised how long some games languish on wishlists!
Very classy of you, good sir! By the way, great idea for a giveaway.
I haven't played Fortune Summoners that much (Only played through the demo), but if you're on the fence whether to play it or not, I'd say to go for it.
There's a certain flow to the combat which is pretty confusing at first, but by the time I was done with the demo (which was a bit over an hour iirc) it clicked and became amazing.
At first, the combat seems unresponsive and clunky, but that's only if you button mash like you'd do in a normal Beat 'Em Up. It's quite deliberate and favors defense heavily. Invincible frames and parries are to be utilized to their fullest and attacking when the enemy is out of your range is a welcome to get your shit trashed pretty badly. There's also a varying length of delay for every attack in your belt, and you are expected to base your strategy on these delays.
For example, when fighting an enemy, it will attempt to dodge every normal attack that you throw at it, and then attempt to counter attack. When your enemy is right in front of you, it'll attack you with an attack that's far faster than your normal attack. So what you're expected to do in this situation is trade damage for speed, and attack with a quick poke, or parry the enemy's attack and counter with a stronger attack.
The writing is also good for what it is, and pretty charming without most of the creepy undertones that come with most anime.
Writing this post makes me want to play it now.

I tried the Fortune Summoners demo, and couldn't get a hold of the combat. Maybe I should give it another try. Doesn't seem too keyboard friendly though.

I haven't been able to find it. I've decided for the next Great Sale, I'm making a Spreadsheet. Keep track of who I've gifted and who has gifted me and who is being particularly classy in the thread.
I don't mind repeat gifting people - particularly when it's funny. However, some organization would be nice.

Sometimes they ask you to add them, sometimes they send it to your e-mail, sometimes they add you. Read the description and see if anything is mentioned. If you never get it you can report it after I think a week or two weeks as not received.

And I also keep a spreadsheet for all the buying/gifting/receiving stuff. Really helps to keep it all organized. Though I always cringe since I put the prices in the sheet and add them up as well.

Something important to remember that to chain attacks, you have to wait until your character has gone through all the animation of an attack to use your next one.
Basically, if try to use a stab while your character is using a normal attack nothing will happen. You have to use a stab after your character has already done a normal attack. I hope that wasn't confusing.
And yeah, the game is infinitely better with a controller.

So, STALKER - I own SoC, is Call of Pripyat or Clear Sky also worth it? SoC with Lurk runs like crap on my PC for what it's worth.
Some days Blue wonders why anyone ever bothered making numbers so small; other days she supposes even infinity needs to start somewhere.

Steamgifts is just a means of randomly assigning a gift to people who want it. After that it's up to the person who created the gift to either friend you & send it through steam or email it to you. Once they've done that, you then go and click "Received" on the Steamgifts page.
Would anyone particularly like a Red Orchestra Guest Pass? I just noticed I have one. So, before I randomly send it to someone on my Friends list, does anyone actually want it?
