[Painting Miniatures] The War of Art 2: Brushes covered in paint edition
Posts
3 films in so far.
That looks very good. The skin tones are very eye-catching.
You should post a picture of all your guys together. I only ever see bits and pieces.
Im just the new guy around here,
but, it seems to me that you need to start breaking legs when people don't come through >.>

We expect nothing less from you.
Perhaps I can interest you in my meager selection of pins?

First miniature of the year. Whoop! No longer missing anything

I need to go play battlefield. Get my M1014 with frag rounds engineer rolling.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
These models are pretty rad. My only (minor) gripe is that I would have preferred the tail to be a separate leg instead of molded into a rear leg.
They're Barghest Fiends from Puppetswar.
It's too thick to just attack with a knife, so I'm using a pin vice to turn it into swiss cheese before cutting it away.

This is 90's GW as hell. Just need to paint the rim goblin green and give it a big paper banner on the back.
It's basically the entire GW Studio Dwarf army from 1994 compressed into a single miniature.

So depressed, that I finally finished the Riptide I got for my birthday in September.
This is one of the most dynamic poses I've done, with the Riptide leaping backwards, raising it's shield to block incoming fire, as it jets over a surprised fire warrior and pathfinder, and the way it's posed made it damn hard to actually get a decent picture of.
Man, it's been so long since I've painted anything - I think my camera agrees, because it's got that foggy patch on there for some reason. I guess I better try cleaning the lens before I do anything else.

Thanks!
I am painting a unit of plastic Man-O-War Shocktroopers. They have been primed using the GW black primer spray. I am trying to apply a base coat of Macragge Blue. If I thin the paint any at all (with water), the paint does not adhere well to the model, but instead pools together (as if it were really watery and applied to glass).
Some further details:
This occurs on most parts of the models, but not all of the parts. That is, the paint adheres normally to the shields and weapons of the models.
The models were assembled when primed, so the same conditions / primer / amount of primer should be on the entire model.
Other models primed at the same time do not appear to have this issue. Just the ShockTroopers.
If I don't thin the paint, it'll adhere. Of course this is thicker than I would like it.
It appears I can brush on some of the GW Imperial Primer, and then thinned paint adheres properly.
So, my workaround is to use brush on primer, but I am curious as to what could cause this issue in the first place, any thoughts?
I've never encountered primer that repelled paint. It's possible if it's a bad batch of primer I guess - but if you've used it on multiple models, I can't see why the Man-O-Wars are behaving so.
This is a common thing, believe it or not. You're much like me, in the respect that you always dilute paints, especially citadel paints. However, a variety of reasons can cause your paint pot to change in viscosity and the binder can dilute. I've witnessed this effect from paint pots I've left in my car in the summer, and when I start to paint with them, the paint is more 'runny'. Some paint pots are out of the factory 'thin'. For example, Privateer Press paint pots are like this, in contrast to Citadel.
So, believe it or not, I've started painting straight from the pot a fair bit these days when I use Privateer Press paints. I don't know if the newer Citadel paints are still thick and chalky - they used to be very thick, and you always diluted.
Also, and this is a thought, the Man-O-War model has lots of curved plates and flat surfaces. Paint will always run if it's too thin on curved surfaces.
Ordered them Dec 18th, got a shipping notification Dec 28th, picked them up last week.
Then again, I'm in Sweden, which is pretty much next door to Poland.
I use acrylic medium to thin my paints. Both Citadel and Vallejo have bottles of medium.
Yeah, you might notice I'm kind of big on that sort of thing, when there's enough base to work with.
Have you seen the base I made for my Trygon Prime -
-or my Storm Talon-
- or the one I made for my secret santee for a Fire Prism/Night Spinner a couple years back?
(Those last two are supposed to provide the appearance of the ship cruising high above the battlefield - for the storm talon, it's also a literal depiction of it's Escort rule - wizzywig, bitches!)
My original plan was to have the Riptide crouched atop a ruined wall, right arm extended in a firing position, left arm up to shield its upper body, covering the retreat of tau infantry models dashing through a gap in the rubble beneath its legs, but that turned out to be way too much to reasonably fit even on the oval base. Plan B was having it leaping forward off of debris on the base, but that kind of aggression didn't suit my view of the suit.
The pieces that have the issue are very curvy, so perhaps that is part of it too.
It is almost like it is acting as if no primer had been applied ... a couple spots under arms that were missed by primer act the same.
