Cheap or free open ended games.

I was playing Survival Crisis Z, and I was wondering if there were any other games like it. I'm not really into the whole zombie thing but I like the idea behind the game of it being a free roamer and choosing your own objectives. I don't know what to google for so I'm wondering if anyone else knows of any games that costs only a few bucks or is free, and has the same type of gameplay. For the PC of course and downloable. And I already have Mount and Blade.

Haha, you know I didn't think about that. I was mostly thinking along the lines of cheap downloable games though. I played Morrowind on Xbox but unfortunately it isn't BC.

Heck, I might just pick Morrowind for PC up though.

The combat in Gothic 2 is *much* better than Morrowind (ignoring the mods which improves it of course). The problem with it is more related to the controls themselves, which really takes some time getting used to.

For $15 you have no excuse not to get San Andreas. The most open endedness ever achieved in a game. From base jumping to homicidal rampage, to pimping, to taking that van off the side of the mountain there is too much insanely sweet stuff there for only $15.

So, while I understand the beautiful thing that a simple google search can provide... what's up with the lack of linkage to these wonderful free things?

GTA 1 & 2 (and Wild Metal - Odd, I remember it... but not playing it) And you get to sign up for a WONDERFUL <_< newsletter. Totally worth it for... GOURANGA!
    Survival Crisis Z
Mount & Blade (This is the PA forum post... I'm uh... going to buy it right now actually) (obviously not free. But the first 6 levels is)

And uh... out of principle, I fully support not linking to Battlecruiser 3000AD!
In related news, I played the demo once. Is there a support group, or a class action lawsuit for emotional distress...

Edit: And a real contribution - Dwarf Fortress
It's like Sim Dwarf... but with more intentional "suicide" than Maxis would allow.

If we're straying into Roguelikes then it simply has to be ADOM, for me. I dare say it's quite a bit more open-ended than Nethack. If you're new to roguelikes then the interface is still a pain in the ass, though.

Sorry if this is a derail but I'll quickly try to convert archenemy.

Well there are two main hurdles to get over, really.

Usually there are a whole heap of keys to learn, but it's really just a matter of printing out the list of shortcuts and having it next to you as you play, I had the ADOM shortcuts stuck on the wall next to my computer for weeks, but you can pick up the basics really quickly. Afterall a lot of the commands aren't used on a regular basis.

Secondly, the graphics. I never really found these that bad in the first place, there's a certain charm to them, to me. I'm not even joking when I say that eventually you just see "Orc, Giant Slug, Tome" etc. rather than the ASCII symbols. I know I do, anyway.

    Pictures?

The town where you get the first few quests and grab your starting food.
    adom.gif

The overworld. This is the same each time but individual dungeons and such are randomly generated.
    adom.png

There are three things that draw me in to ADOM more than anything else.

    - Random content. I love entering a dungeon I've entered dozens of times before and being surprised by finding a vault full of undead or a giant bee nest. There's always the impending danger that something that can easily kill you will stroll around the corner and do just that, which leads nicely onto...

    - Permanent death. You've got to love it. Each time you play you're living out a life up until it's end. I can't quite describe it but it appeals to me beyond the obvious feeling of danger. I guess I was never a fan of getting stuck at one part of a game so at least when you die here, you're dead, that's it. Time to start again and learn your lessons. Of course, there are ways around permanent death if you're some sort of wuss.

    - The little things. There's a huge amount of content in most roguelikes, Dwarf Fortress being an extreme example. Little things in ADOM can make all the difference, though. Many of these are little things that will surprise you when you discover them, so I'll spare you any example, but just rest assured there's a lot to stumble across here.

Hope that helps a little. Of course, it's open-ended too, so we do still have a vague link with the original topic.

Ironically I just found out I had an almost month old email inviting me to Lord of the Rings Online Beta right after I made this post. I will take a look at those roguelikes though. The only thing that turns me off from them is ASCII. I mean, I want to play Dwarf Fortress, but I just can't.

Also, Falcon's Eye is more of an isometric nethack clone. Looks a bit like ye olde ultima games.

And frankly, I'm appalled that nobody brought up Vega Strike(Or the subsequent mods for it).

It's kind of like WC: Privateer.

Oh, and here's IVAN, which is a little more straightforward than Nethack (there's always a giant plant at the last floor of the first tunnel, for instance), but has more involved graphics. You can see what you're wearing, your condition, etc. It's really impressive when your wand of metamorphosis explodes and turns you into a diamond golem, a huge gleaming manlike figure that tears through everything with impunity.
