The number one cause of liver failure(which easily leads to death) in the USA is acetominophen overdose. The reasoning being that it is often put into multiple drugs. So joe goes to the Walgreens and picks up Tylenol cold and sinus, Dayquil, and Dr. Quixor's Curelixer. All containing Acetominophen. Joe's real sick so he slams them all down. Bam. Joe's skin is nice and yellow, he's got liver failure!

I work at a college health clinic. Its hilarious how many kids come in making this mistake...
    not hilarious

Guys, it has nothing to do with the painkillers. You'd have to take a lot more acetaminophen than that to hurt yourself unless you had some weird medical condition.

Like Szechuanosaurus said, it's the dextromethorphan. Dextromethorphan is a dissociative just like PCP and ketamine (and has nearly identical effects at higher doses). Even at the normal dose for cough medication it makes me feel loopy, which is why I don't take it.

Oh I know it has nothing to do with the tylenol or IBU, I was just making a "the more you know" statement.
The cause is most defenitly that he was dehydrated, hadn't eaten, low glucose, and has an upper respiratory infection. Throw some medication in the mix and that's bound to mess with your mentation. Drink some water, and have some cheese and crackers you'll be fine.

Okay, he apparently took five teaspoons by accident instead of the recommended two. That pretty much explains everything.

Looks like I'm a bit late to add my two cents (MD). I'll make my generic warning against diagnosing problems over the internet, and my legally required statement that I'm not giving medical advice.

I recommend that you wait a few hours and see if it gets better (the Dextromethorphan trip). It should. The therapeutic index is very high so you're very likely not in danger, even with five. I recommend that you eat only what you can tolerate, and don't push it - you're not going to starve after not eating for a week, let alone two days. Your appetite will return when you start to feel better. Doesn't matter what you eat, but ideally it would have some of each food group and not only ice cream...but if ice cream is good for you, then do that. If your appetite doesn't get better in a day or two, make a doc appointment.

Do, however, force a little liquid from time to time. Just water, maybe gatorade if you can manage. Even if you're vomiting, drink. If you can't keep anything down and you feel parched or dry (say, for another day), stop in at the ER.

    Hope you feel better soon.
