The Basics
Eh, the pic of Syndra is a bit too tall, so I'll spoiler it until I find a more panoramic one.

League of Legends (popularly known as LoL) is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game created by Riot Games.

You play as a summoner that selects Jayce to battle with and against other summoners and their respective lesser-tiered champions. During games, your champion will level up, get gold for better equipment and hopefully destroy the enemy nexus. Outside of games, your summoner level will rise. This will unlock new runes to enhance champion stats, bestow mastery points for further champion customization and goodies like avatars. At max level you can then compete in ranked matches and/or judge player behavior in what is called the Tribunal.

New Player Guide

1. Make an account: NA EU (West) EU (Nordic & East)
It is worth noting that referring new players has perks, so I would ask for a referral link in the thread rather than a vanilla account.

2. Download the client: Right here
The official Mac client has been discontinued.

3. Play the tutorials! New User Guide
The game can be a bit overwhelming, and I highly suggest you play the tutorials OR find someone willing to do a few vs. AI games with you.

4. Join the "Penny Arcade" Chat Channel to find helpful people and people to escape solo queue with! Click the little double speech bubble looking thing at the bottom right of your screen. Click the + speech bubble right above it. Type in "Penny Arcade" and introduce yourself. Not everyone you see in the thread will be there, as not everyone plays on the same server. You can ask these people how to play champions, we pretty much have someone who plays each kind of Riven, whether it be bunny girl (broken tier), crimson elite (garbage tier) and every kind in between.

5. Check back on this front page for info on "Weekly PA Events". They're a great way to get to know the people, and there's no strings attached since they're only custom games that won't affect your normal win/loss record in any way, shape, or form.

6. Play vs. People
Do it, damn you. As said above, the AI is not going to give you the legitimate LoL experience. You don't want to hit your 20s solely from bot matches.

7. Get yer free champs.
Subscribe to Riot's Youtube and get a free Alistar skin! Includes the champion! Free Tristana if you're into the Facebook thing. Promo skins always include the champion if you never bought it.

The Dos and Don'ts of LoL

Meta Stuff
1. Don't buy champions randomly!
LoL has two currencies: Riot Points (RP), which are bought with real money, and Influence Points (IP) which are earned solely by playing games. Champions can be bought with both, but every week there will be ten free champions to play with. Play these champs instead. Get a feel for each type of champion and see which you find more fun. It's far better to do this as opposed to buying a champ randomly and ultimately being unhappy with it. Also, (it's rumored) you can get ONE refund opportunity for (I believe I read) up to 3 RP purchases. After that, it's your own fault for spending RP.

2. Don't buy Tier 2 Runes.
They are pretty much a waste of IP. Buy Tier 1 and save up for Tier 3. Or, if you're baller like Hargaad, don't even buy Tier 1. Wait to hit level 30, then buy all the Tier 3 runes you need.

3. Do queue with friends.
Playing with randoms is a crapshoot, and playing with an armordillo or two can put the odds in your favor. Play complementary champs and request feedback on how you did in each game (even if you won). Likewise, you can offer advice to others you saw having trouble in a polite manner (because if you aren't polite, you're likely to get flamed).

4. Do learn the champions
When a new rotation occurs, it is wise to play a few games with each champ. Knowing what each champ is capable of will be useful even if you hate how they play and never intend on using them. For example, Karthus has a skill that does damage to every enemy champion, regardless of location! If you know this, then you can be a jerk and take Soraka.

5. Do read guides.
There are multiple ways to play a champion. This combination of skills, runes, masteries and items is called a "build" and are the general strategies for any champion. The recommended items in the game store are not always accurate, and the order you level skills can have a big impact on how the early stages of the game play out. Sites like Mobafire and Solomid offer builds for just about every champion. It's cookie-cutter, but a great foundation for new people. Once you learn the ins and outs, you can tweak a build to better serve your playstyles or as a reaction to enemy or ally players.

6. Do be polite and do report
Sometimes people will suck or do shit wrong. It's a game, so try to keep that in mind when things get a little unhinged. If you insult or yell at people, even if they DID do something wrong, you're likely going to get that person defensive and things break down. Instead of focusing on the game, you focus on hurling insults at each. Stay calm, and politely offer advice when needed. And yet, people are jerks. It happens. Simply /mute them and quietly report them after the game. Taking their bait is probably what they want you to do. Do not give them the satisfaction! Keep your cool.

7. Buy skins
Having a skin for a character is a great way to say "Hey I'm fucking awesome with this champion so get the fuck out of my way." If your team is using more skins than your enemy team, you basically have already won. If you're playing as , you've won the awesome award.

8. Check out The League, premiering its 4th season on October 11th on FX!

Game Stuff
1. Do not be aggressive
There will be a serious urge to want to kill enemy champs. Resist! Death is an all-around loss: your opponents get more cash and experience, you miss out on experience and your lane risks getting pushed. If you set-up a kill and fail, do not continue chasing. In many cases, you will just die to a tower or get ganked. While later on you will learn when to take risks, early in your career it's best to be less aggressive and just let the other guy get away.

2. Do not focus on KDR
Your kill-death-ratio is not the end-all of your value. It is possible to lose despite having a serious kill advantage over the enemy team! Certain champions, once getting the right items, can be unstoppable murder machines. Even if you do kill them a lot, if they reach this threshold, it's possible for a dramatic reversal to occur. It is far more important to support your team's objectives: push towers, protect your own towers from being pushed and keep your team informed of enemy activity. It is far better to have a modest KDR and win, than be the team killer and lose.

3. Do watch the minimap and your enemy
Enemy locations are important! In your low-level games you will likely have two champs tops lane, one mid and two bottom (in later level games, one from top will be off "jungling," so top will have just one champ). If a player in YOUR lane is missing, let the team know. The player might just be heading back to base to buy items, or they could be trying to jump your friend in another lane. And mention when they came back to your lane! But this doesn't mean you should rely wholly on team recon. Watch the minimap yourself for enemy locations in other lanes whenever you can. People aren't perfect, and sometimes that warning comes a bit too late. Another set of eyes is always useful.

4. Do buy wards.
Wards are items that grant you vision of an area for 180 seconds. They are, without a doubt, one of the best purchases you will make. You can plop them along the river and have advance warning of ganks. They'll grant you vision of the brush. They'll alert you of enemy attempts on big-reward neutral monsters like the dragon or baron. If you attack them in the middle of something like that, you could mob up their entire team. Or maybe you are aware of a gank attempt on you. You could alert a nearby friend, bait the ganker in and turn the tables. Buy wards. BUY. WARDS.

5. Do buy wards.

6. Do something.
So you just wiped the enemy team out. Hooray! But...what are you doing now? Did you just go back to your respective lanes and farm? Incorrect! You now have precious map control, and should be taking advantage of it. Gather up as a team and take out a tower. Head to the dragon and get a clean kill. Steal enemy creeps (especially their blue and red buffs). You can always check the status of both teams by pressing tab. If multiple enemies are waiting on respawn, then you need to press that advantage.

7. Don't just wait around all day when you're in a position to win.
IOX0g.jpg

8. Do buy wards.
Seriously, kids. If Hargaad can do it, so can you. I know you have 75 gold just laying around sometimes. Don't feed us with your bullshit of, "But I need to save for x item!" No! Fuck you, and your high horse. If you don't buy wards, and you die a lot, nobody on your team is going to be able to save you from a beefed up (whatever) lane. Consequences will never be the same!

Meet the Team

Like any group activity, stuff is usually broken down into roles. It's worth noting that champions don't always fit neatly in categories. A champion's role in the team may depend on what build has been chosen, and sometimes you may fill several roles depending on the group composition. When picking champions, it's a good idea to see what people are doing and fill in any holes.

1. The Carry: If your team is a car, then the carry is the engine. It's what makes the team function. The carry, when doing its job, will be able to easily destroy the whole team. But, just like an engine is useless without any other parts of your car, the carry relies on its team to get the gold necessary to buy the items needed to kill swathes of enemies. Early on, carries tend to be more vulnerable and weaker than other champs. LOTS of people pick carry in random, because it's the star character that generally gets all the kills. One of the reasons Caitlyn is so great is that she can carry a team since her AS ratios are amazing and she can easily carry and dominate fools.

2. The Tank: Following the car metaphor, the tank is your steering. It'll guide the team into battle, and in many cases will be the one starting the fights. Tanks are there to absorb damage and lock down the most dangerous champions on the enemy team so you can position yourselves to win the fight. Some tanks do this with CC, whereas other tanks have some damage and will soften up the enemy team instead. Tanks still tend to need the rest of their team to back them up. Rammus is probably the most boss at doing all of this, and with zazz.

3. The Support: I guess support are your tires or something? Maybe the AC. Either, support help the team out with buffs and generally shields or healing. Healers tend to assist the carry by allowing the carry to stay in the lane longer through said healing or shields. Unlike, well, just about everyone else, Support don't rely so much on gear and thus will purposefully AVOID getting last hits so that their lane partner can farm gold faster. Because of their reduced need of gold, support should also be buying and placing wards when needed. It's worth noting that EVERYONE should generally buy wards, but as a support you can afford to take the financial hit. FEW people pick support in random due to how hard it is to influence games. You have to be very proactive to make up for bad teammates as a carry. Veigar commonly supports the enemy team to their graves.

4. The Jungler: Jungling is a more advanced concept, and you won't see it until higher summoner levels. This is due to runes and masteries allowing for more efficient jungling. It is still possible on a few champs, even at Summoner Level 1, but very uncommon. As the name implies, the jungler sits in the jungle and kills neutral creeps. This benefits your team by creating a second solo lane (top lane), resulting in more experience and gold for your team as a whole. Once the jungler hits a certain gear/level point, they look for opportunities to gank enemies. This is generally done via strong CC abilities, such as Warwick's ultimate or Nunu's slow coupled with his speed buff. Skills such as these will enable the jungler's teammate in that lane to easily assist with the kill. When not ganking, the jungler will return to the jungle regularly to keep up in terms of gold and experience. Due to their roaming, the jungler has plenty of opportunities to place wards for its teammates. Riven can do this and she's amazing. Only, Rammus can do it faster, and still have plenty of juice left in his zazz-tank.

This is a very simple guide! There are other roles in teams, but this is a rough outline of the basics. Roles can easily overlap, and a champion can fill more than one role! Experiment and see what works and what doesn't.

    Weekly PA Events

    PAving Grounds
I'll make this as brief as possible, and insert more info as questions and rulings arise.
Day and Time: Saturdays at 5pm PDT (8pm EDT)
Team Drafting Type: Snake and Salary

    Map: Proving Grounds
Game Type (currently): All Random. Not Draft or Blind and 'random'...it must be the game type, "All Random"

    Hargaad's Duties
Hargaad tries to run a tight ship. Hargaad makes the rules.
Hargaad runs the spreadsheet. Hargaad (and Auralynx) are working on the rewards.
Hargaad will take care of tallying the points while we draft.

    Captains' Duties
Captains are responsible for a rather short list of responsibilities.

    1. Drafting
    Drafting will be in snake-draft order. 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, etc.
Volunteering as a captain gives you the privilege of choosing which team you will command. You can be first, last, or anywhere between. The earlier you volunteer, the more options you have. Simple enough?
Hargaad will tally the points you've spent. If it looks like teams are uneven in points, we'll have to reach a majority-vote agreement between captains and Hargaad as to whether we will let a noticeable point difference between over-the-limit teams slide or not.

    2. Coordinating
Create the custom game, direct your team to a separate Ventrilo channel, join a team LoL chat channel. Delegation of coordination responsibilities is allowed. The general assumption is that you are the final say for your team. Own it, and never apologize. If people don't like it, they should have volunteered to be a captain.

    3. MVP
Hargaad has rewards for top MVP. It will be your duty to communicate with your team on who you all thought was MVP of all opposing teams as well as the collective performance of your own team. One MVP per team.

    4. Proper Judgement
This will probably get absorbed into "Drafting" but it should be pretty common knowledge. Just try to not abuse the system. If things look pretty uneven, Hargaad will step in to reset things, but I'm not always quick to correlate the names to their skill. Hargaad has other things to focus on setting up without the distraction of determining who is stacking teams with absurdly over-the-limit point teams.

    Everybody's Duty
Be respectful. As long as everybody has an understanding that captains mean to try their best to win, there should be no need for apologies.

Shut the fuck up, and listen to Hargaad. It gets really loud and cluttered having more than 10 people in a Ventrilo channel, and it's difficult to inform people of new rules, confirm drafting names, etc. The less people start talking about off-topic topics, the easier and faster things can progress.

If you can't stay, that's fine. Hargaad would prefer that people stay for all games, because the awarding of 2, 1, -1, and -2 points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place has less drastic change than awarding 1 point for each win and taking away 1 point for each loss which would result in awarding (possibly) 3 points for a clean sweep and taking away 3 points for a bad night. Understandably, life happens. You just need to understand that there is a line of judgement that Hargaad has to decide how to deal with the outcome of any games after you leave which may not be what you feel is appropriate.

Pay attention to the enemy team, too. At the end of the night, captains are to gather the popularly agreed-upon votes of their respective teams to decide who the MVP for each team is based on the games you played against them. Also, teams must vote for one of their own for MVP based on all games. It can be for any reason. Good sportsmanship, good K/D ratio, amazing support, great coordinator, whatever. You may present your argument to the rest of your team why you feel your choice is the right choice, but an agreement must be reached, and captains do not have to report the reason why you all chose the MVPs, just who you all voted MVP.

Hargaad would also like to note that sometimes voting for your best player should take some more reflection. Did the person who did the best do so because they're highly skilled? What about the less-skilled player? Did the less-skilled player perform exceptionally well against a team that is mostly higher-skilled players than they are? Just something to think about.

    The Rules
    Pre-Game Rules:
Provided there are less people joining Hargaad and Co. for PAving Grounds, some rules may not apply. They will be discussed in their own paragraph of such occurrence.

The chosen starting time (currently, 5pm PDT [8pm EDT]) will be the dividing point of which, those in LoL channel "PAving Grounds" will be considered priority draft players. Those arriving after will be designated late-comers. When drafting commences, late-comers are ineligible to be drafted until either all priority draft players have been picked, or the remaining priority draft players are too expensive to draft, in which case, late-comers who might be inexpensive enough to fill a slot on a team may be drafted. *In the case of low-show numbers for drafting, there will be no division based on timely arrival, but point-drafting will still be in effect.

Salary (point) drafting will be in effect. The point-cap may vary, but Hargaad's hopeful bar will be 50 points. If Hargaad had an actual system that calculated the average points of the available players that show up on any given week that also provided for captains to draft people in a manner that still balances the cost of each team, that would be fantastic. As it is, there is no such system. Hargaad cannot force any of you to play each week. Having a variance each week means that points won't always balance out just right. If Hargaad feels that teams are getting overly-stacked, the draft will be reset, and Hargaad will have to start holding hands for draft picks. Hargaad is not affectionate in the least, and really does not want to have to hold your hands. *Again, it will be difficult to balance teams with a small turnout. Hargaad will do his best to, and expect the captains to, try to keep things as fair as possible.

It is up to captains to create the custom game, or an appointed teammate. It would be in generally good form for captains to just briefly inform the other of "Hey, I'll make the game." Simple as that.

Rerolls: This shouldn't be difficult to understand. Each team is allowed one reroll per match. To reroll, simply have one teammate 'quit' the match while in team selection. As the client works atm, the leaver will have to find the game again in the custom lobby. Easiest done by (first opening up the private games, then) sorting the creator's name column and finding the person who made the game.

    Scoring
Each player starts a week worth an initial amount. After all games are played, Hargaad will update their new score based on their performance in the latest PAving Grounds.
Scoring will change based on how many teams there are.
4 Teams will be scored based on overall standings after all games. 1st place=(+2) points; 2nd place=(+1) point; 3rd place=(-1) point; 4th place=(-2) points
3 Teams will be scored based on each match. +1 point for a win; -1 point for a loss
2 Teams will be scored +1 for winning or -1 for losing. Should players remain interested in playing more, a "Best of 3" will be held, but additional points will not be awarded. It will still just be +1/-1 for the winning/losing team of the 3 games.

    The Prizes!
Not entirely sure of the magnitude of the prizes, but there will be prizes awarded to the top MVPs.
1st Place MVP will get a prize.
2nd Place MVP will likely get a consolation prize.
3rd Place MVP may or may not get something. Available prizes have not been finalized yet to guarantee something to trickle down to 3rd place.

RP will be awarded, but how much is unknown to me at the moment because I don't have that much free money to spend. That being said, I still have plenty of time before the year is up to get a few more RP codes, so stay tuned for updated and more info. :)

    PAinhouses
(to be filled with what @Schuss wants me to insert)
    Basics of PAinhouse:

Team Drafting Type: Snake and Salary

Map: Summoner's Rift (Winter map no longer available)
    Game Type (currently): Draft

Alternating weeks will pertain to one of the following:
    1. Theme Week
At Schuss's discretion, a theme will be presented to all teams for all games which will provide a challenge of reduced selection of champions or a change from the current meta-style play of 1 jungler, 1 tank top, 1 AP (or counter) mid, 1 AD and 1 support (or kill-lane) bottom.
    2. Normal Week
No themes present, unless a team chooses to at their own discretion. No bonuses awarded for running a gimmick composition.

Repost from last thread on Jayce so it doesn't get lost

Oh boy, I have been maining Jayce in ranked so this is all 1200 elo advice.

First, Jayce is more of a poke champ than a burst you down and murder you champ. So to that end, as a top lane champ (which is where he belongs) you should be constantly poking and harassing past level 3 (or else where you wont eat lots of minion harass in return).

As such, against melee champions, you want to default to stay in hammer stance. That way you are regening mana with last hits and if they come close to the minion line, use your q to jump to them, then hammer them away with e. IMMEDIATELY after that switch to ranged stance and blast them with w/3 autos. If you are flush with mana also accelrate a q in ranged stance into them. Basically if you are doing this and unless they have super high sustain, they should be whittled down quickly. At this point, just zone them or if they get close, combo and ignite them for a kill.

Against a ranged champ, you want to do the opposite, stay in ranged stance, harass with w when able and then if they are foolish and get close switch to hammer and pummel them. Though that is more unlikely.

In all these situations you are dictating the terms of the engagement and poking the other person much more than they are poking you.

Jayce is a solid counter to most top lane choices. If your opponent has no natural sustain, combo twice and proceed to zone to your hearts content. If they have sustain, like vladamir, continually poke them in ranged stance as they approach the minion line. In this sense you are like the ocean, constantly wearing them down.

    I almost always max R>>>E>>>W>>>Q.

For build order, go double dorans, into a bloodthirster or maw of malmortious depending on whether they are an AP or AD top. Second item is either a LW or Frozen Malllet depending. Round our your kit with an atmas. Buy lots of wards. Blow people up.

If you need to be tanky and dive the opposing carry (which I think is a suboptimal role on jayce), double dorans, into triforce, into frozen heart, if you need MR get a banshees or maw of malmortius as your third item.

Favorable matchups for Jayce --> Vladamir, Olaf, Irelia, j4, Teemo, Shen (your hammer will cancel his ultimate). Renekton, Kennen, Jax, GP, Rengar, Xin Zhao.
Unfavorable Matchups for Jayce --> Riven, Akali (possibly still undecided), Chogath, Rumble, Lee Sin, Yorick.

You will destroy darius top if you can avoid/bait his pulls. I have not played against a good warwick top as jayce so I have no idea where he falls, though I would imagine jayce would win that lane.

Good luck fighting for a brighter tomorrow!

My overall W/L has increased pretty drastically since I started jungling Eve.

    weird.

i've had the same luck with kayle and taric. although, i honestly don't know wtf to do with a frigging leona lane.

the only thing that really stops taric is a braindead adc that cant follow the dotted line to the victim.

    and leona. eff leona.

  • BurnageBurnage Registered User regular
How are Riven and Cho unfavourable for Jayce? If Riven gets close you punt her away. With Cho you dodge his skillshots because you've got speed boosts all day long, and then poke him down (or, more frequently, let it turn into a farm lane).

Also, not really sure that Atma's is worth it on him. Or anyone, really, since its nerf. Wriggle's is cheaper and gives you more sustain and roughly the same damage, in addition to free wards.

  • KayKay What we need... Is a little bit of PANIC.Registered User regular
When facing Leona as Taric, you need to be ON THE BALL.

You have a few choices, depending on positioning, situation and your ADC. Is it Ezreal/Corki/Tristana/Graves? Stun her as you see her come in, and hope they can hit their escape quickly. If you're close enough, and their ADC is too far away, pop Shatter and both wail on her. If not, just retreat.

If their ADC is in your face though, it's best to stun them, as most of their damage is going to come from the ADC and popping Leona's passive. If the only active enemy is Leona, the damage won't be too bad. If you think you can deal with it, and have Exhaust available, you can Exhaust the ADC when the stun wears off, Radiance/Shatter them (or both the ADC and Leona), and wail on the ADC. Once Leona's blown her CDs, it takes a while for them to come back, especially early game with no levels or CDR items.

Leona is an excellent offensive tanky CC support, but you can limit the damage by not panicking when she comes in, and react accordingly. It's not like a Blitz (or to some degree, a Naut) pull where the best you can do is stun whoever's closest, heal the carry, and pray.

honestly i have a much easier time against blitz. hell, i'll bait his pulls to just get in range of their adc.

but leona... 2 stuns, an 80% slow and bonus true damage....

    just infuriating.

I really like the Nasus/Veigar style Q. And partially Annies.

Where last-hitting with a specific ability does something cool. And it makes the choice in lane whether to go farming or harass much more strategic.

Also, Veigar is super-fun late-game when you have the full combo and can just go "YOU DIE NOW"
    I still miss old bankplank.

Although honestly you always feel real bad about harassing with an ability like that.

I felt bad about it until I started getting zoned hard when the other mid knew what I was doing and why I wasn't harassing them with it. Also I max Veigars W last, so I just have the ult, stun, or the Q until 8, and even then the W isn't great. Sometimes you just gotta get of a warning shot to prove you're serious.

Personally, I think W is one of Veigar's best abilities. Obviously, you want to max Q first for the increased AP (takes some time and skill to have at least half your CS as points in your Q stacks). I worry about cage last, tbh, because W is a great lead to make the enemy run in a different direction or else they take damage. When you drop the stun cage, you put W a bit behind them, and either they run away and take the W damage, or they have to run a different direction which could give you the time for Q to come back off cooldown, or allow you to push the enemy into a gank.

Unless you have 2 levels of e you will never hit with w unless they really mess up. Once you force them to buy merc threads with blue fuelled qewq+autos combos you can continue maxing stun if you want to keep hitting it. Rank 1 w honestly suffices, as veigar wants to farm in lane mainly anyway. So you have no problem sitting near tower and farming up Q.

Right. You want to give the enemy the option of eating a W, or running in another direction to mess them up.
I think people are just forgetting ranges. Veigar's E stretches further than his Q. Veigar's W has a longer range than his E. So, when you drop the cage, you have plenty of room for dropping W where the enemy is about to continue running, which will either chunk their health, or the enemy will run inefficiently in another direction.

Uhm, or you just level E to level 2 and they don't have a choice. They just lose lots of health. Also I don't really get the trap, if you want them closer you, they get closer and theeeeen you have your Q and ult left. He'll probably beat your face in. Or you want him to run away, which if he can't tank your W he'll want to do anyway.

    Vic_Hazard on

Yeah honestly that is...not good advice. Without using Veigar's ult his W is pretty much all of his damage. If you 'force' them to take 1-2 steps towards you after the stun to avoid the W then...you still lose. Because you did no damage. And it's a safe bet whatever they're about to do to you is significantly more dangerous than your single Q.

A Veigar whose E and W are on CD is a free target for pretty much any mid that isn't sitting at low hp. Two ranks of E, land your W. Otherwise you sit back and stay defensive.

  • FrozenzenFrozenzen Registered User regular
2 ranks of E until you force merc threads, then keep leveling it to be effective anyway. Think at rank 4 or 5 you can hit w anyway, been a while since I got the chance to play veigar.

Rank 3 would suffice, though you can definately still hit W with level 2 and mercs. You just either have to W first or give them the option of flashing out after the stun.

Bought Irelia last Tuesday to learn her as top. I think I got her down after 14 wins and 3 loses for normal games. It doesn't matter if I fall behind early, I just get tri/merc/whatever tanky items then carry the team fights for the win. But most of the time I just roll over against most of the match ups. Only ones I have problem against is Rumble and Darius.

Now learning to play Ez sometime this week...

Yeah the reason I don't get Veigar's W until later is that without the two ranks in E it doesn't have the same abilities for escaping that the E has, and I can't really get hits with it. So it's effectively useless until I've upgraded E anyways, and so I take R at 6, Q whenever I can, and E for two levels. So that makes it until 8 that I can get the W, and then I start going into W when Q or R aren't available. Then E or W to max kind of is a judgment call depending on how things are going. I'd rather have Q to farm and escape from ganks with E until I actually start just being able to melt a face in one burst. Then once I have the combo up and running I go into damage and start melting. And then the combo I use is E-W-Q-Item-R-Q.

Riven is rough because of her multiple gap closers in addition to her shield. Even with Hammer time, one she gets some AD and levels her shield you basically cant poke her at all. And with the multiple gap closers even hammering her away, she can still put damage on you. Its not a hard counter, but its a much riskier matchup and also her damage is really high if she catches you in a bad place.

Cho'gath just has insane sustain, which makes it not a great matchup. At best case you are farm lane, which I suppose isnt terrible.

Q is really mana hungry and W does more damage with the combo. 130% of your autoattack at max attack speed is pretty savage when you are building damage.

The thing about Jayce's W is this; the hammer form isn't particularly useful (primarily because it has an AP ratio), and even though the cannon form's 130% AD is awesome, you've really spent 4 ability points just to double its damage. Compare that to levelling Q, where the hammer form multiplies its damage by ten when going from level 1 to level 5, and the cannon form multiplies its damage by five - and both of them only increase in mana cost by 20.

    R > E > Q > W versus a tanky lane and R > Q > E > W for an opponent you need to keep away from is the way I'd suggest.

Leveling w doubles the scaling damage which scales on Damage and Critical Strike and Critical Strike damage. Leveling q increases its base damage
