    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a memory card?
Most likely, yes. Even if you avoid the PSN entirely, there are still some retail games that will require a memory card to save progress.

    What's PS Mobile?
It's a new service Sony have launched to target the cheap app space on certain Android devices and the Vita. Both games and non-game apps will be available, so it opens a window to some very interesting things. Right now it's only available in Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia but it's expected to expand soon.

Are all PSP, PS1 and Minis games on the PSN backwards compatible?
No, currently there are a number of games you can only download through a PS3 and others that don't work at all. The games known to NOT work are listed below and it's important to point out that compatibility varies depending on the region. Some games may work in one region but not in another for instance. For a more fleshed out NA list, see here.

    How do I switch accounts?
This video explains how to switch them. One thing to note though, is that you don't actually need to take your memory card out of the Vita when you do this. If you leave it in there, it will ask if you want to format the memory card as well and you can select not to.

How do I get into the in-game options in PS1/PSP games?
Simply press down on the screen while in game and the menu will show up, letting you play with a few settings. The in-game menu lets you remap controls, add a bilinear filter to help eliminate aliasing, increase disc speed (to decrease load times) in PS1 games and more.

How do I take screenshots in-game?
Simply press the Start and PS button at the same time. Some games disable this feature, though, so if it's not working, that's probably the reason.

What do I do if my Vita has frozen?
Here's a handy little guide to help you out.

    What's "Cross-Buy"?
It's what Sony has labelled their 'buy one, get the other free' PS3/Vita game promotion. It works just as intended, though so far only for PSN games. You buy the game and get both the PS3 and Vita versions of it.

Similar to this, there are also some games that have Cross-Buy DLC.

What Cross-Buy games are there then?
    Here's the list:
    Out:
    Alien Breed
    Bentley's Hackpack
    Big Sky Infinity
    Dragon Fantasy Book I
    Foosball 2012
    Guacamelee
    Hotline Miami
    Hustle Kings
Jak & Daxter HD Collection (PSN only)
    Knytt Underground
    Limbo
    Motorstorm RC
    Pinball Arcade
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (PS3 version only)
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault/Q-Force (PS3 version only)
    Retro City Rampage
Sly: Thieves in Time (PS3 version only)
    Sound Shapes
    Spelunky
    Thomas Was Alone
    Top Darts
    When Vikings Attack
    Zombie Tycoon II: Brainhov's Revenge

    Upcoming:
    Cloudberry Kingdom
    Divekick
    Dragon Fantasy Book II
    Frozen Synapse Tactics
    Hohokum
    Lone Survivor
    Luftrausers
    Snapshot
Stealth Inc. – A Clone in the Dark
    Superfrog HD

    Games with Cross-Buy DLC are:
    Big Sky Infinity
    Dead or Alive 5/5 Plus
    Foosball 2012
    Guacamelee
    Hustle Kings
    LittleBigPlanet 1/2/Vita (costumes)
    Motorstorm RC
    Pinball Arcade
    PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
    Sound Shapes
    Street Fighter X Tekken
    Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
    When Vikings Attack
Wipeout 2048 (free Wipeout HD and Fury DLC if you own their PS3 equivalents)
    Zen Pinball 2

How do I play local/ad-hoc multiplayer PSP games online?
This will require a PS3. On the PS Store there's an app called Ad-hoc Party, which will let you connect to it and play with others that are using Ad-hoc Party. One problem with this app though, is that they're region locked. So people using the US version of the app can only play with others that are using the US version. Luckily it isn't region locked, so European users can create a US account, download it, log back into their normal account and use it to play with people in the US. So to reduce confusion, I suggest everyone here use the US version, as most of us seem to be based there.

Where are my Vita saves stored?
You know the little bubbles on the main screen? Yeah, DO NOT DELETE THEM! While some retail games save your progress straight to the game card, there are a number (including Uncharted GA) that don't. They, alongside downloadable games, save to the memory card and are represented by the bubbles. So deleting them, will actually delete your save as well. If you're running out of space, back your save up to the PS+ Cloud Storage or the game itself to your PC/PS3/Mac and then delete it. Patches and installs will be backed up as well, so you when you put them back on your Vita, you won't need to download/install them all over again.

    What's PlayStation Plus?
PS+ is Sony's online service. It provides a couple of very useful features: PS+ cloud storage and auto-update. The cloud storage allows you to upload all your game saves to it and then re-download them at will. While auto-update automatically checks for game patches/firmware updates and downloads them, uploads saves to the cloud storage and syncs your trophies.

The biggest part of PS+, however, is the PS Store content. Alongside additional discounts on games, Sony have a selection of games available to download. These games can be played so long as you're subscribed to PS+ and since the expiration date is saved in the registry, you don't need to be connected online. And if your subscription expires and you eventually re-subscribe, you'll be able to play the games from your first subscription again. You don't need to keep them downloaded, they'll be in your download list. Sony swaps games in/out of the selection each month, so it's worth keeping an eye on.

I play mostly Japanese games and JRPGs though, so there won't be a lot of chances to whoop me at pinball (not even out here). But ピコットナイト? Fuggedaboutit. Let's kill stuff. There's always LBP and Lumines too.

I'm glad they finally added a big bunch of PSOne Classics to the Vita store. They just need to add CTR and my husband will be happy haha.

Also, why on earth is New Little King's Story $40? If it was available on physical media I'd think about paying that much, but for a download only port? No way.

You're still a terrible person for not liking Peace Walker. It was one of the only Metal Gear Solid games to make any kind of sense.

Better a PSN-only release than no release at all. And it's a remake/sequel, not a port.

Oh no I'm happy to see it come to the US digitally rather than not at all, I'm just not down for paying full retail price for a digital only game. $20 tends to be the sweet spot for me for digital only stuff, like Corpse Party. That felt like the perfect price for that game. I will probably look into the game in the future though when it's on sale down the road. I've got Ragnarok Odyssey and Zero Escape this month as well as Persona 4 next month to look forward to anyways.

You think they should've dramatically dropped the price despite being a full priced retail game in Japan and Europe? That seems pretty ridiculous to me. And as vagrant_winds pointed out, it's not a port at all, it's a completely new game. If you want the physical version so much, just import it from the UK.

They could have at least thrown in a $4-$5 digital discount for NLKS like some other Vita games have done with their PSN version.

The Silent Hill: Book of Memories demo was unfortunate - it was too fun for me to immediately ignore it but not impressive enough for me to definitely want to buy it at full price. Definitely going to be waiting for the reviews on that one.

I just paid about $80 (a rough conversion from Japanese yen) for the latest Ys title. Enjoy your $40 games!

@RainbowDespair - Now that PS Mobile is out, any chance we'll see your studio's games on the service?

Yeah I'd agree that a small digital discount would've been nice, even for just the first couple of weeks. But then it's not like Konami have even tried to market it or anything.

I wish I could've used a longer title. I still had Zero Escape, Need for Speed and Ragnarok Odyssey to reference before I had to cut it short. October's a pretty awesome month for the Vita.

Loot the Land is fun. I'm not sure if it was worth the $3.49 I paid for it, but it's been diverting enough. It's missing some crucial information (why did I get a medal on this level? What do I need to do on that level to get one too? Am I close? Do I spend more money? Less? Go faster? Kill more guys?), but the actual gameplay is pretty engaging.

It's pretty, too. Native res, I guess? My brain was in PS mini mode, and it took me a second to remember that I could use the touch screen.

You're still a terrible person for not liking Peace Walker. It was one of the only Metal Gear Solid games to make any kind of sense.

Come on now, the first two MSX games, 1, 3, and Peace Walker are easy enough to understand. 2 was an experiment in crazy story telling and 4 had the burden of wrapping up 20 years of plot. It was long winded, but far from the most convoluted game ever.

Plus they're just fun to play.

Also, why on earth is New Little King's Story $40? If it was available on physical media I'd think about paying that much, but for a download only port? No way.
You think they should've dramatically dropped the price despite being a full priced retail game in Japan and Europe? That seems pretty ridiculous to me. And as vagrant_winds pointed out, it's not a port at all, it's a completely new game. If you want the physical version so much, just import it from the UK.

No, I don't think they should've dramatically dropped the price, I think it should have been a bit lower to start with. I think some of the PSN versions of Vita games have started a bit lower, like $35ish instead of the full $40. I'm also just saying for me personally, I will probably wait until a price drop and/or sale in the future to pick the game up since the price is currently too steep for me.

1 made barely any sense. Put it down on paper and read it. It's borderline crazy and connecting the dots is more a safety measure to vindicate spending all that time playing the game. Even the GC update didn't really help in any tangible regard. 2 made no sense at all, in any fashion. 3 was solid. 4 was ridiculous and went completely off the deep end that 2 didn't even know existed by the last third of the game.

I love the games, Big Boss'd everything but 4 because 4 is just boring as a game, but after recently replaying MGS the original, I can say any attempt to make that into a cohesive, reasonable story was more just me doing the leg work to make the tapestry of randomness into something a little more digestable.

Nihilistic claims that they have significantly upgraded the visuals for Call of Duty: BLOPS D.
PlayStation.Blog: How is the game progressing since we last saw it at Gamescom?
Robert Huebner, Studio Head, Nihilistic: Gamescom seems so long ago. I think the most noticeable thing is a significant visual upgrade; a richer color palette, more detailed models, and better lighting overall. Also we implemented an entirely new animation blending system that allows us to capture a lot of nuanced animation that Call of Duty players are accustomed to.

And to back that up? No new screenshots or video. Also, it's apparently Unit 13-esque in the single player department. No story mode to speak of, but "intense and replayable objective-based missions that allow you to get better and better over time to improve your performance."

I'm getting more and more skeptical. I loved Unit 13, but I don't think that's the kind of thing Call of Duty people are looking for.

MGS1 wasn't hard to follow at all. It told a complete, understandable story.

Complete? Questionable. Understandable? Sure. Making sense?

Why, yes, they called in a clone of a man to attack another clone on a island off the coast, housing nuclear material, in an effort to stop them from blackmailing the world for the remains of a man who had been dead for some dozen years to somehow create a super serum. Except this is all some plot to kill people with some mystery virus that only effects certain people, which somehow doesn't kill the host even though the trigger is part of his genetic code, and which invariably matters not at all as it never effects him. Oh right, rah rah rah walking tank. Also ninja. Why is the ninja there? Fuck you, thats why.

Peacewalker? Soldier who has been used leaves his country and forms his own mercenary outfit. Gets dragged into a cold war struggle over a series of AI test machines when he accepts a mission.

Yeah. I can see how they can easily be considered similarly confusing.

You can make the same sort of dismissive bullshit argument about any game. The fact that you're using that to support Peace Walker is absolutely laughable. Peace Walker has incredibly advanced AI's with personalities that were based on The Boss. In the 1970's. And Snake has a fucking horse.

    Oh and
you have two kids running around the base, one of whom turns out to be in her mid 20's and is a triple agent. Also, creepy Extra Ops mission.

Peace Walker's story SUUUCKED. But it was saved by its awesome gameplay, missions, RPG elements and co-op.

I've only ever played MGS1 and the story was so insane I just laughed my way through it and remember nothing. It was just insane. Like a 13 year old came up with all kinds of ridiculous ideas and kept going, "Then the bad guy goes BOOm kaCHOW BOW wamBAM but the hero goes KEerrwOP!"

It has been many years since then, but that's all I remember.

EDIT: @The_Spaniard, the bloom on those snow levels make it seem blinding. There is almost zero contrast in the floor there. Wow.
