Warhammer 40k is a futuristic tabletop strategy game created by GamesWorkshop that pits multiple races and factions against each other for control of the galaxy. The wiki article can be found here.

Nurgle is the personification of powerlessness, Tzeentch personifies power, Khorne personifies duty and rage, and Slaanesh personifies the epicurean or the sensual. These four powers are not the only entities in the Warp, but they are the greatest and most powerful. It is said, in the background to Warhammer 40,000, that the nature of the Warp is beyond human comprehension and is truly unknowable.

The 41st Millennium is a savage age where Mankind battles for survival in a galaxy riven by bloodshed and destruction. Humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, assailed on all sides by aliens, traitors and daemons, and only the superhuman strength of the Space Marines and the uncountable numbers of the Imperial Guard keep the slavering alien hordes from bringing total annihilation.

Warhammer 40,000, the tabletop battlegame of the far future, allows you to wage war with armies of Citadel miniatures across miniature battlefields in the ultimate contest of strategy and skill. Each player is a commander who must choose his finest warriors, decide upon cunning battle plans and strategies, and lead his army to victory or death. Games can vary in size from small skirmishes of just a few dozen models per side, to massive clashes with hundreds of miniatures.


So, what exactly is Warhammer 40,000?
Each player collects an army of Citadel miniatures then, using the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook as a guideline, they fight epic battles against their fellow generals. Dice (like you'd find in almost any board game) are used to determine success and failure: to decide whether a bolter shell hits its target, or whether a lascannon blasts through the armour of a tank. Each game is played, not on a regular 'board' but on a special gaming area where models are not confined to 'squares' but are free to move as their controller wishes. Because Warhammer 40,000 is not played on a set game board, tape measures or rulers are used to see how far a miniature can move - an agile Eldar jetbike can travel faster than a foot-slogging Imperial Guardsman after all.

That all might sound a little complicated, but a short game or two is all that is needed to grasp the basics. Seasoned commanders find that the rules become second nature, and they seldom need to refer to the rulebook at all.


The Warhammer 40,000 Hobby
There's more to Warhammer than just playing games. In fact Warhammer 40,000 is an exciting hobby in its own right. Many players enjoy painting their Citadel miniatures to amazing standards, lavishing extra detail and attention on their models to make their army extra special and unique. Likewise, while your chosen battlefield can be as simple as a bare table with few obstacles, many wargamers like to build modular tabletops as detailed and exciting as the ones you can see on the Games Workshop website.

Most hobbyists begin playing Warhammer 40,000 with a friend or two, honing their skills, and developing their army in regular battles, but the fun doesn't have to stop there. There are thousands of wargaming clubs around the world where players challenge each other to games of Warhammer 40,000 every week. Also, every Games Workshop store has its own gaming tables and boards. Most offer gaming nights for you to come and meet new Warhammer 40,000 generals, discuss painting, modelling and gaming tactics - and of course, do battle. For the really adventurous there are regular Warhammer 40,000 gaming events all over the world, run both by Games Workshop and by enthusiastic gaming clubs and societies. From competitive tournaments where hundreds of players battle to determine a champion, to campaign weekends where each battle forms part of an exciting storyline, there are Warhammer gaming events to suit every taste - all you need is an army of your own and the courage to do battle.

Getting Started
All miniatures wargames need a few basic things before you can get started. First and foremost is a collection of miniatures. Second a place to play. Thirdly, and just as importantly, are the rules for the game. Warhammer 40,000 has grown and developed over more than 20 years and the current rules are the best ever.

There are two ways that you can get to grips with the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. It's available separately as a hardback volume - more than three hundred pages of glorious artwork, background and photography, as well as the rules themselves. This rulebook is the indispensable guide for hobbyists everywhere, it details the rich and colourful galaxy of Warhammer 40,000 and contains all the rules and instructions that you need to get started with your own games.

The second way to get your claws on the Warhammer 40,000 rules is with the Assault on Black Reach boxed game. This awesome game in a box contains two fledgling armies, the superhuman Space Marines and the brutal Orks - as well as scenery, dice, measuring sticks, a getting-started guide and a pocket sized rulebook. This book contains exactly the same rules as the larger, hardback rulebook - but misses out on some of the extra information contained in it (there's only so much you can cram into a box!)

The important thing to remember with both the hardback rulebook and the pocket sized rulebook is that the game is exactly the same - the rules are identical, it's just that the rulebook contains extra background on the Warhammer 40,000 universe and guidance on collecting and painting your armies.

Which rules set is for me?

In the end, the only person who can answer that question is you. People who are completely new to wargaming, and Warhammer 40,000 in particular, often appreciate the getting-started guide contained in the Assault on Black Reach boxed game, as well as the awesome collection of Citadel miniatures it contains! The boxed game contains everything you need to start playing. It's hard to argue with getting the complete package all at once.

Veterans of the wargaming hobby, and players who already have experienced Warhammer 40,000 before, often choose to go for just the hardback rulebook - they understand the basics of wargaming and sometimes already have their own collections of Citadel miniatures, so they don't need introducing in quite the same way.

In the end, the most important factor is: which appeals to you. Most new Warhammer 40,000 players start with the Assault on Black Reach set to get their collection off the ground, and get themselves a copy of the hardback rulebook later - covering both bases.

So, tell me about the rules.
Games of Warhammer 40,000 are traditionally fought for five - seven 'game turns'. In each 'game turn' each player gets a go. They can move, unleash devastating ranged attacks and fight with all of their models. The rulebook explains how to do each of these things, and once you've read over it once, it becomes remarkably simple to do. In no time you'll be blasting your enemy's warriors with battle cannons and bolter shells, and hacking them down with whirring chainswords!

Orks The most widespread and warlike race of aliens in the bloodstained galaxy of the 41st millennium. From the depths of the galactic core to the distant ghost-stars beyond the galactic rim, burgeoning Ork empires rise and fall. In terms of sheer numbers and planets, Orks occupy more of the galaxy than any other single race, and if they ever unified, they would crush all opposition the stood before them. However, the Orks' passion for violence is so unquenchable that they spend their entire lives embroiled in war, and will fight each other as readily as any other foe.

Tyranids Without a doubt the most alien race encountered by Humanity. They have been likened to galactic locusts, remorselessly hungry and too numerous to stop. Tyranids are a nomadic, space-dwelling race that emerged from the void between galaxies into our own in search of new resources to consume. These hive fleets have discovered sustenance in abundance in the forms of the myriad species of the Milky Way galaxy, stripping planets of all bio-mass before moving on, leaving nothing but a ball of scoured rock in the wake of their titanic swarms. What's worse, no one seems able to halt, let alone reverse, the Tyranid tide as its tendrils bore ever deeper towards the heart of our galaxy.

    Chapter 4: Army Transports
    Because you need a way to cart all your wonderful new toys around, here are a couple recommendations beyond what you can get from GW itself:

    Sabol Army Transports A little expensive, but I use them exclusively, because of the quite reasonable international shipping price, and mostly for the fact that you can custom cut the foam trays to fit your models. Also available from the War Store.

    Figures in Comfort A wide range of precut foam trays, and carrying cases for whatever your needs.

    Battle Foam Sturdy solid cases and custom cut foam tray. Pricey, but guaranteed to keep your little dudes safe and secure in transit.

    Chapter 5: Painting Services
    The hobby's dirty little secret, for people who have entire armies in venerable shades of pewter and gray, and want something else, but lack the time, ability, or faith in their own prowess to do it themselves (but still have money).

    Blue Table Painting: Based in Utah, USA, these guys do good work for a reasonable price. They have quite a few videos up on youtube if you want to check out their work.

    Painted Figs: Based in Sri Lanka. Just about the best $/painting quality ratio out there. They do excellent work at a very reasonable price. Shipping is pretty expensive from the USA, but for anyone closer to that side of the world (like Japan) even with the cost of getting your models there and back, the price can't be beat.

    Game Fusion Studio: Based in California. They make and sell a large variety of terrain as well as offering mini painting services. Pricey, but they do some nice looking work.

    I think all my dice are weighted. In the opposite direction. Heh.

    My terminators are coming along. But I've rethought my commitment to finishing them this weekend. If I get their arms finished before the end of the week, I'll be happy. I've seriously just dropped down to concentrating on getting the hammer arms done. Plus, i think I'm going to have to pin and greenstuff one of the arms. The FW should pad went on kind of crooked and now seems to be getting in the way when I try to fit it to the model. It's annoying. And one of the reasons why I like things being built before being painted.

    EDIT: Oh, and just so it doesn't seem like my old 'woe is me, I can't paint' schtick, I've been painting, on and off, but I'm actually trying to use all the lessons I've learned her. I put on a base coat of Iyanden Darksun, then heavily washed them to get that darker color in the recesses. That part looks good, so then I went back to redo the Iyanden Darksun. I should have gone on to the next yellow color, but I started on hammers instead.

    After a a few trials, I think I figured out how I want to use all my leman russ hulls now that all the ordinance ones are nerfed to hell.

    One with 3 heavy bolter's will be a exterminator with a heavy stubber. Same cost as a base punisher, but better ap on almost every shot, better overall range, and has some utility vs light armor.

    Two of the lascannon hull I will just use as vanquishers with co-ax heavy stubbers to twin-link the main gun (finally use my FW turrets). These have been doing far better than I expected so far (one has yet to miss a shot, and they gunned down a pair of stone crusher carnifex that were down 1 wound), so I pulled out some FW decal sheets I had and started giving them markings and painting details along with the exterminator. Probably use these three as my heavy slots for a while.

    Here's what I have done with them so far: Annihilatum, Preatorian, & Hatred.

    I put a heavy bolter/dozer blade hull together as well for a demolisher, which I may switch in place of a vanquisher eventually. Still leaves me with two lascannon hulls I am not sure what to do with. Probably try to break them up to swap the LCs out for heavy bolters to run them as stock battle tanks (can't see taking LRBTs any other way). Maybe make one into a triple bolter hull to use with my other FW exterminator turret.

    I can kind of understand the response, whilst sending a message by tarring and feathering him right away could be an appropriate response, I don't imagine many tournaments have a system in place to easily deal with losing a person.
    As a spot decision (who really expects weighted dice?), I can kind of get behind disqualified but can still play - if only because his opponents need someone to play against if they're to do well in the tournament.

    Then name and shame him so he's got a ban from future tournaments.

    Though the comment on Dakka implied it was just a dice for the first turn? How did you realise, seems that's a significant enough roll that only needs doing once. Pretty sneaky.
    Clearly the answer though is Campaign Badge dice for tournaments, to be used on the first turn.

    They roll different, depending on how subtle they are trying to be; the really bad ones have an obvious pause-skip when they roll onto the weighted side. Plus if you actually pick them up you can tell the centre of mass is off by feel.

    Also, THH Bk1: Betrayal get! Either this thing is real leather or someone went to a lot of trouble to get that leather smell into leatherette. The packaging also includes an extra card slip to protect the metal corners, which is nice. Very definitely FW's highest production value book yet. Can't wait to actually read it. 8->

    Chessex has a booth at PAX and they had a tray with weighted dice in it. They are not like other dice in that they aren't the same size as any common die I've ever seen (think bigger than 16mm but not bigger than the huge d6's people use for turn counting and shit), the pips are different (no divots, and they're SHINY SILVER) and you roll that thing twice and you literally cannot miss it.

    It's kinda like if you have ever seen a casino die just once, you'd know exactly what a casino die looked like forever after.

    Also Tasty, one die is enough to swing a game COMPLETELY. Need an explodes result? 6. Need to pen a landraider wiht lascannon? 6. Need to roll for a melta shot? Most of the most important rolls in the game come down to one die.

    Anyone arguing it was only once so not a huge deal is silly. He got caught on his first try. Had he not been caught, how many times would he have done it? Just cause he's a crappy cheater doesn't somehow make it less bad that he is a cheater. :P

    Also, I just realized you can either have a flying Daemon Prince or a slowboat walking one, no Jetpacks allowed. :(

    yeah, a couple specific dice, particularly different size/color form the rest, that are set aside for specific things like morale are always at a least a little suspicious.

    I have seen some funny exceptions to this though. A friend has a block of green/white dice for his dark angels and a block of blue/white for his eldar. Always starts with the dice matching the army he is playing, but as they fail him spectacularly as the game goes on (4/5 failed 2+ saves, roll 5 1s or 2s to pen on 5 hits with cyclones, fortuned eldrad fails 2 wounds), the offending dice get moved to the "morale" pile. By around turn 4 or so, the morale pile is so big that there are not enough dice left in the regular pile to do much of anything. At that point the dice for the other army are broken out in frustration, and the process begins again with the first set of dice used for moral and the new set used for everything else. Of course at this point, the first set of dice start rolling 5s & 6s on morale tests.

    I think I may have come up with a Nurgle list I really like. Lemme run it past you guys and see what you think. Working from memory here, so it may not be 100% accurate, but close enough:
    Chaos Lord, Mark of Nurgle, Power Lance, Bike, Veteran of the Long War, Aura of Dark Glory, Meltabombs - 140

    4x 7 Plague Marines, 2 meltaguns, meltabombs - 772

    7 Chaos Bikers, Mark of Nurgle, Veterans of the Long War, 2 meltaguns, power fist - 244

    3 Obliterators, Mark of Nurgle - 228
    7 Havocs, Mark of Nurgle, 4 Autocannons - 162
    7 Havocs, Mark of Nurgle, 4 Autocannons - 162

    Herald of Nurgle, Noxious Touch, Cloud of Flies, Palanquin - 80

    Are the bikers fearless?

    No, sadly, but they're Ld 10. An Icon of Vengeance might be something to look into though, to make them fearless.

    ugh.

    So i went onto the 40k wrecking crew forums to see if there was anything listed or spoken about from them on this whole thing. I found 2 things.

    Firstly, the guy who won, was a person who played and beat me in my 5th game. He played fine, and I'm not saying he's a cheater but here are the rules that the tournament winning player did not know:

    1. There is no "Reserves phase" it is part of the movement phase. Things used "per phase" cannot be used in some sort of imaginary "reserve phase". There are only 3 phases per turn.
    2. Flyers CAN move more than 18 inches. Yes, even though his army had 5 flyers in it he somehow did not know this rule. There were quite a few rules questions, none of which I was wrong on. I only hope he was playing his army correctly as I don't play necrons.

    Secondly, on the forums, the guy who was using weighted dice now has the sig "they call me loaded" and thanked the winner for "getting revenge" and putting the hammer down.

    Ugh. Well, I hope he likes being fucking called out on blood of kittens. The entire 40k wrecking crew are a bunch of douches. It really pains me.

    Where are the rules for the Stormtalon? And what are your opinions on the best weapons loadouts?

    And could it be magnetized to switch between the missile options and the gun options?

    I've gotten everything I think I want out of the DV set. Anyone want the chaos, the bikers, the librarian or the captain? Also got an AOBR ork set, 2 extra nobz and some gretchin to trade.

    I heard there's this thing called the law of averages, what's that all about?
    I used to regularly play against a math teacher in my Warmachine days. Apparently the law of averages doesn't apply to me or something. I used to drive him nuts with my rolls. He'd write my results down and average them out and EVERYTHING. Apparently I rolled an 8-9 on average with 2d6 and it drove him absolutely nuts.

    Granted I almost never beat him but you get the idea.
