Gentlemen... BEHOLD!
(A Jose Canseco bat? Tell me you didn't pay money for this!)
TMNT for GBA.
Finally, someone (Ubisoft) has figured to build a new turtles game by advancing the gameplay foundation laid down by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. It has been
so long, but we are finally getting a true successor to those games.
The Game Boy Advance game, developed by one of Ubisoft's internal studios, clearly used the arcade game as its foundation. The game dismisses any sort of platforming or puzzles that other Turtles games have had, in favor of one of the most satisfying combat systems seen in a brawler designs. Combos are key to kicking butt in this game -- if you're quick with the controls you can juggle an enemy into the air, and back-kick one of his cronies before the airborne guy comes back down for more. The higher the combo, the bigger the score, and the more experience you'll earn to upgrade your turtles' abilities. Money collected can be used to buy new moves, items and abilities between levels.
Combos? Upgrading abilities?
Fuck yes.
Also, you can use environmental objects as weapons in this game just like you could in the arcade games, by for instance chopping down a light pole to have it land on a crowd of enemies. Yes, you can still deflect enemy weapon attacks as well. Most interestingly, similarly to games like Final Fight, you can pick up and use some of the weapons enemies drop (such as the baseball bat Raph is wielding in that screenshot up above).
There is only ONE downside, and that is (according to IGN) there is no multiplayer component.
But, you can clearly see in screenshots multiple turtles fighting together, so perhaps IGN is mistaken.
Either way, dust off your GBAs or fire up them DSes, this game will be in stores within a week.

According to IGN it comes out the 13th (two days ago)... but I don't think that's right so I didn't post anything release-date wise. The movie comes out in about a week, so I would imagine the games do too.
The DS version looks scary...

I specifically want to know how the PSP version is shaping up.

Here's to hoping the GBA version is as awesome at TMNT IV: turtles in time.
Honestly, though, is it so hard to take the TMNT IV formula and add a really basic combo system?

You gotta love the concept art for this game.
Hey, wasn't this a move in TMNT IV?

Either way, I'll probably buy this, just so I have something awesome to leave in the GBA slot of my DS that isn't an RPG.
I'm crying at the fact that the game you just described isn't being made. I really, really, REALLY want it so badly.
Then make sure the nunchuck is used as a nunchuck and it wont fly apart when i beat guys up[and hit myself in the face]

Edit: i Love love love the original Eastman & Laird look.
Mediocre at best.
In fact, in the trailers for the movie there are night scenes where their eyes become totally "blanked out" just like the comics. On that note, I loved the mode in Turtles in Time that made the sprites seem more like their comic counterparts with the all white eyes.
But if you were merely talking about the "all red bandanas" thing, I'd love to see that represented more often as well. There also seems to be a prevalent problem with facial expressions in the scenes I've seen in the movie, sometimes they're just way too goofy looking (and those avatars near their lifebars in this game don't help that).
but the new character designs i don't like because their faces look "square" i guess.
I liked the demo for the PC/Console version, I'm excited for that too. The DS version does look scary though. The other games look like Ninja Turtles games, the DS game looks like a shitty movie game.
I'm definitely not too fond of the faces myself. I think they were trying to go for a more realistic representation of a turtle's jaw, but it really isn't as effective as the "saggy" faces used in the early comics.
Here's a few examples of the biggest offenders:
And I'm not too fond of Splinter or the humans:
I WILL NOT BE DOING 3DS FOR NWC THREAD. SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE TO TAKE OVER.

And I sort of like having multicolor Turtles, in skin and bandanas. The colors seem to go well with their personalities. Leo's calm blue, Raph's angry red, Mike is party orange, and Don is... um... eccentric purple?
Well, three out of four ain't bad.
I don't miss where they had their colors ALL OVER, though; brown kneepads, belts, wristbands, and elbowpads are cool by me.
Anywho, I wonder how much the GBA game will be? Cheap, I hope.

Wow, Splinter looks like that perpetually unlucky Squirrel from the Ice Age movies. :-(
I am worried.
Here's hoping for a PG-13 sequel with some E&L darkness to it, if it succeeds.
Also this game looks like the shit. Not shit. The shit.
In a positive sense.

Exactly.
we do not talk about fast forward here
4Kids has systematically ruined everything I hold dear.
On the other hand, ratings were slipping. So it was probably this, or nothing at all.
I'll take this, in the hopes that the movie might rejuvenate enough interest in the traditional aspects of the franchise for us to get the lost season and maybe see it continue from there.
...I was afraid you meant the original toon. :P

YES.
PREACH IT
I would also like to point out their utter retardation with DVD releases. I want to see the Hun Episode where he ruins everyones shit, and it ends in a 7 way fight between him, the turtles, Kirai, and Bishop, but instead there are like 5 dvds for every 2 episodes.
ONLY NOW DO WE GET FULL SEASON RELEASES
ARRRRRRGHHHHHH!
Now the real question will be Wii or 360 version? I messed with the pc demo a lil bit and I liked it (though I can't seem to find an option to configure my 360 game pad /cry) but I have a feeling they might fubar the Wii controls.
Although it's very simplistic, not sure if you learn new moves the further you go through. The turtles all seem to fight pretty much the same, just with different animations for the weapons. Keep hitting B for sword attack (Hold at end of combo to do some kind of spinny weapon thing. Raph throws his Sai's, Don spins on his stick, Leo does a move where his swords kind of levitate around his body), hit Y for melee (kick attack) which works in the same fashion as the weapons.
Holding down B on it's own does a charge attack, let go and aim towards bad guys and you do a dash attack similar in style to the first POP's mega pause-time-and-slash move.
The jumping attack is cool. Leap in the air, press attack, it goes all slomo and you jump down and pound the ground, not doing much damage to enemies but knocking them flying.
There's also an "anger" meter, after killing so many people it fills up and everything goes in to slomo. Not sure if it was just Raph but in this mode I could press X and it did a funky POP style throw-out-arms-and-knock-down-and-kill-bad-guys-in-area move. Like the first offensive move you get in Sands of Time.
Graphics themselves are mediocre, like a hi-res Xbox game. Swinging around etc is fun but glitchy, I landed under the floor a couple of times on Donatello's first level and glitched through the walls occasionally.
Other impressions: Don't want to spoil the plot or anything, but the first mission is a training mission, just to get you used to controls, with splinter narrating. Up to stage 4 and it was pretty easy thus far and the levels are ten minutes or under easily.
Anyway, definitely good fun!

I must own this...........now.
I havent really followed the new cartoon, so I looked at Wikipedia and... uh... wow.
So 4Kids completely ignored the huge cliffhanger at the end of the last season and replaced it with "LOLZ TURTLEZ IN TEH FUTURRRRR!!!" That's pretty terrible. 4Kids just keeps getting worse and worse.
IGN's hands on.....check out the video....NOW. if there was any doubt about buying this game, it has been DESTROYED.
You mean...why couldn't they make the DS version more like the GBA version?
it is bestest
