Chivalry: It's kinda like War of the Roses with more decapitations
Posts
Basically good archers with it (I've being practicing but I'm not great) can stun fuck a single guy with it while they desperately try to block.
Honestly having played Mount and Blade I prefer chivalry much more. You may have a bit more control over your swing in M&B but the sheer impact/speed you get in Chivalry is incredible.
Though I suppose a lot of that is presentation as well as mechanics.
I sometimes play an archer in duels with friends when I feel like being a dick. Take a couple potshots while they close the distance and finish them off with the short sword.

The only thing I like better in WotR is playing archer. I played archer the bulk of the time in WotR, in Chivalry I can't be bothered to fuck with it. And that's in part because actual melee combat is more enjoyable in Chivalry.
Of course, WotR does have horses, which Chivalry does not...but in all my time playing WotR I can't remember ever even seeing two guys on horses fight each other. The usual pattern would be one dude in the server gets a horse, runs a few people over, his horse gets shot out from under him, he gets mobbed and hacked to death, lather rinse repeat.
On the one hand WotR's looks much more polished, on the other hand Chivalry's archery is kinda janky and inaccurate in a way that makes hits feel great.
I just wish it was harder to maintain momentum while side stepping arrows honestly.

Love ya, BionicPenguin.
As I discussed towards the front of the thread. A good archer isn't that bastard at the far back field hitting one guy ever 5 arrows.
Good archers either hold flanks (with the heavy bow) or at the most aggravating pieces of shit who stop your blows from ever working by twanging you with the light bow.

I think I might have a real problem.
Are you using the maul? It's fustrating at times but I promise it'll addict you with the sickening thud of a cranium bursting.
In Chivalry, the melee combat is a very visceral experience. You feel weapons as they strike each, your implements have mass and convey a sense of weight that leads to a satisfying experience when you smash an opponent's head in. Combat is brutal, bloody and quick; I think the way the game handles it is probably a good representation of the chaos of mass medieval warfare.
Despite this, Chivalry also has the possibility for skilled play. There is more to the game than mashing LMB, and you can see this with the guys who dominate the leaderboards as they slaughter several opponents at once.
War of the Roses, on the other hand, is a much slower game. It has more of a simulation feel to it, with weapon vs. armor type, attack type, and melee range playing a larger focus in combat. However, this leads to a tendency for combats to last longer, as players circle around each other trying to jab one another with hits. Roses is perhaps deeper in its strategy, but I do feel that the game could use a few more grapple-type moves to bring in a more brutality to the combat.
Also, while perhaps it is just me, the defense game in Roses can sometimes be frustrating. Often, when I specifically try to block in a certain direction, the game registers my mouse movement incorrectly, which can lead to some frustrating deaths. Also, ping seems to be a huge factor in this game, and oddly having a high ping can be beneficial.
That said, I've been playing Roses more often lately, because I like the leveling / gear unlocking method in the game. I guess I like my carrots. Though I think I would rather have a game where the combat leaned towards Chivalry's implementation, but with the RPG aspects of War of the Roses.
*I can't really speak much for the ranged gameplay in either title. I like it's implemention in Roses much better, but I'm horrible at ranged in either game.
*Lastly, while I haven't gotten a chance to play a mounted character in War of the Roses yet, I have seen mounted opponents engage each other quite a bit. Though I will say the majority of the time cavalry circles the battlefied looking to take melee stragglers unawares. This is perhaps a bit realistic though, as I think this is a role that cavalry played in actual warfare.

However, it would be interesting to see what happened if you were able to create melee only servers. Notably in the arena stage, where bows seems a bit out of place for the setting.

Don't I know it. I'm a self-hating archer and I do it in duels purely for trolling purposes.

I worked my broad dagger too, but I kept getting flanked by other archers/MAAs. I know it says to adjust mouse sensitivity - but man, these guys were around on my backside before I had time to turn 90 degrees.
I didn't know unlocks worked with any weapon in the tier! I got through Vanguard and Knight, but I was miserable trying to level with the light jav. Oh man, that's such a relief.
Also: Opening with the alternate LMB attack is kryptonite to shield users. And about time...they were fucking impossible to beat with a 2H.

With this game being on sale during the summer sale, I know a bunch of you peasants picked up a sword and decided to try to lop-off a knight's head. I got a slight head start and bought this a week ago on a GMG sale.
I'd love to play with some fine PA folks, so either add me to Steam or post here. I will get on the PA vent whenever I play this, so I hope to see you there too!
Archer hate boils down to the same hate people have for camping snipers in FPSes.
That and there's this odd mentality in the community that Archers don't belong in this game at all.
Either way, learn the Archer and troll your way to hilarity all day e'ryday. It's amazing just how mad some bros can get.
Archers should be getting at least 30% of their kills by just flat out stabbing a dude, the backstab passive is there for a reason.
Also if you just got this game:
a) add Royal Canterlot Voice on Steam
b) see the maul, ultimate combat ambush, weapon at work
c) go unlock the maul yourself
d) join me in a front line known only to our foes as 'the windmill'
I still much prefer the poleaxe.
The Pole axe may be technically a better weapon.
But the pole axe doesn't one shot vanguards.
Also, playing an archer is the best thing when you're actually good at the game. People come after you expecting an easy kill, but whoops shortsword in your face.

AGATHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The Maul is my weapon of choice when I've reached the end of my rope or just want to be the best Barbarian I can be. Exploding heads with it is one of the most satisfying things you can do in that game.

Just like, afk swing at roughly head height and start giggling like a lunatic.
Because provided it's not a duel, you gon' pick up kills.
Eventually your whole team will band together and you'll be one giant mass shouting "AGATHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" as you charge towards your trembling foes.
But we all know the Order is the best faction.
Yeah but a composition like that is really easy to crush.
Just switch to a vanguard heavy comp or a shield knight and go shove their faces in. A team like that has absolutely zero front line and so just bulking up yours will win you it pretty effortlessly. Also interupting duels is everyones job. Creating unfair situations should be your main goal. When you come up to a brawl you should stop and consider which enemy is the most likely to survive or which friendlies are in the worst position and try and strengthen those fights in your favour. I see tons of people either making the mistake of acting like the game is for 1v1ing or piling 5v1 onto a single target and as a result causing a ton of pointless team damage and getting out of position.
They're just annoying, where I roll my eyes, but I don't get mad at them or anything.

But all the voice acting is purposefully over done and hammy. That's what makes it so incredible.
