So, I have come to an interesting moment with my 6 year old, who was about to " get his own dude" before my gaming group decided they no longer needed me to attend. He wanted to play so bad, but I cannot find another group in our area that we could attend. This lead to a new idea that I think would satisfy his budding table top geekdom, a TCG. Now, here is where I am a little leary, I played MTG for years and still have a few decks, but think it would be a little rough for him to grasp all the tapping and mana and special rules. I have never played Poke or Yugi in person only electronic versions, would either of these be a better suit for a younger kid, or are they just as complicated at the table?
I would recommend Duel Masters. It's basically Magic the Gathering Jr with an interesting card advantage mechanic when losing (as a player loses life points they gain cards which they can sometimes inst-cast for free which adds a very interesting momentum management to the game). It's a dead game in the English speaking world (but still supported in Japan) so you can find starters and lots of 100-200 random card grab bags on e-bay for cheap.
But I might mean formerly dead. It looks like Wizards of the Coast have started to re-release it under the name KaiJudo http://www.kaijudo.com/products/ and from what I'm reading they are going to be marketing this hard and properly supporting it plus it's aimed at the 6 - 12 year old market. Power levels of cards are being tweaked so whilst ruleswise it is pretty much the same game the cards are not strictly backwards compatible with the original DM release (and of course the card backs are now changed).
Edit: In terms of quality of game I think it's massively better than YuGiOh.
