It'd help if the game had a test drive mode, both to test new designs and new features..

If they don't have one on the back end, they really should.
Agreed. The most fun part of a mech game for me is in the design. Switching shit in and out to see if it works.
However, being penalized for this kind of experimenting (Hey, how do the numbers look with endosteel and add a few more heat sinks?), even just the c-bill cost, really takes a lot of the fun out the design portion.
It'd be nice if there was an offline mechlab that would allow you to shuffle things around to your hearts content. Even better if it could then upload your designs to the in-game mechlab.

I just want to know what the role of the commando is intended to be in a game with better armed, better armored, almost as fast mechs with jumpjets.

I love this response to the bitching about the Wang offering an unfair advantage. Guy named Ghost Bear says,
oh god, quit crying. Shoot the damn arm off, it has a huge hitbox. There, the mech is 75% less effective.

    Comedy gold. And true.

Also 3 missile hard points. Commando with 3 streaks is going to tear up just about any other scout.
The other variants? They're just there to fill up space ;-)

I have literally seen commandos tear people up with dual erppcs more often than I've seen it with streaks.

We have found an issue with the current DHS implementation where the engine DHSs are acting like single, standard heat sinks. Unfortunately this was missed in testing on all levels of development including myself. We apologize for the oversight and have found the problem.
I figured this out in two matches by myself via the highly scientific method of "attempting to use an ER PPC and then facepalming after firing it a couple times."

Obviously PGI needs to hire me.

seriously. We managed to not only notice a problem, but figure out it was somehow only tied to HS in the engine.

Actually we found out it was only the heatsinks in the engine when a CSR responded to Gaslight and told him that. Which makes me think the whole thing was an intentional change and the devs just don't want to admit it.

  • evilbobevilbob RADELAIDERegistered User regular
Or the CSR was told that's what was happening but not explicitly told it was a mistake, and passed it on as this is why and it's intentional.

Streak Commandos piss me off because, right now, you can't knock lights down and streaks still go right for CT. That means Commandos can run around all day long with zero need to aim or avoid collissions, but still have all the advantages of high speed and are a threat far exceeding what they should be able to do for that weight of weapon.

But oh well, that'll only last until streaks get patched. I hate Gaussapaults significantly less than any streak loadouts, because at least the Gaussapults have to aim.

  • TheGerbilTheGerbil Registered User regular
The best counter to the six streak cat if it is the only enemy around is to simply shut down.

Which is hilarious and effective, against a single Cat.

Less effective with one Cat plus 3 others around. Power down then and it's headshot city.

Probably popped a case fan. Unfortunately those things tend to be like 50 bucks (no really). If you don't have a cooling pad already, I'd get one to help reduce the strain on your laptop case fans.

I'm convinced that most of the vocal people on the MWO boards are absolutely inept at this game. It's like when I saw people bitching about triple AC/2 Dragons after the last AC buff. I just sat there going "really?" AC/2 Dragons last about 10 seconds tops when I run into them and then I just haters gonna hate moonwalk away as the armless Dragon sits there going "...fuck."

EDIT: @Tox Can you put into the OP that if people want sigs they need to PM me?

    Moonwalking is OP. Nerf moonwalking.

So it's time to admit it; I have piloted the Jenner precisely no times since the patch. It's been all Cicada all the time. Great looking mech, both inside and out, lovely hardpoints, and quite frankly? As the metagame stands, I would much rather the enemy have another medium than a light.

320XL, 1 LLas, 2 MLas, DHS, ES, FF, all the armor and heatsinks I could want. It's my new crack.

How is your repair bill? Mine is consistently above 60k if I die. So grinding up to an atlas will take forever if I am not playing with the PA guys.

On the plus side, 3xac2 cicada is even more fun than 3xac2 dragon. Crash on exit bug is gone. Forest map is fixed for me so I can get 30 fps like the other maps instead of 5 fps.

But lbx10 seems weaker or something. I was circling around a cat unloading round after round and couldnt even blow an arm off. Maybe I was lagged or something but I remember it was more powerful than that.

So I finally got some time (and Hurricane X-COM has passed) and I'm thinking I should dive in. But the game seems a bit intimidating. When do you guys normally play and would you be willing to guide a newbie in?

That's probably a lag / hit detection issue. For as much noise as they've made about fixing the server syncing issues, "lag armor" is still extremely prevalent and one of the main reasons lights/Cicadas are so ubiquitous now.

Well that and no knockdowns :P

    ---

After playing around with the Wang, I've come to find it more useful than I expected.

Not head and shoulders better than other Mediums, but that AC/20 really does hit like a freight train (if the game actually awards you some hits). Assuming you can protect that right arm long enough to get through most of the match, you're able to do some serious damage with 28 AC/20 rounds.

And it will be even better once engine double heatsinks are working. Not sure it's better than Ninja's Cent-AL build though. That thing is going to be a beast when Engine Doubles start working.

So my Brawlmeister Awesome build is pretty fun (2xLL, 1ML, 4xSRM6), but after the games last night with you guys I think when open beta hits I'm gonna change over to a Reaper build Atlas.
The Atlas is is faster, takes more punishment and has more flexible weaponry, which means the Brawlmeiser becomes basically useless if grouped with one.
The problem is, because the Atlas takes so much more punishment I always had to let them go first, but then wasn't quick enough to circle around and attack the target from the sides. As I also have to get so close this always led to lots of standing in each others firing lines, impaired visibility and pushing each other around (which will be really bad once collisions are back in).
If I played another Reaper I could at least lead the charge on another target, which I can't really do in the Awesome. While it does a lot of damage, it isn't good enough at taking damage to really feel comfortable having the sole attention of the Atlas the other team gets for me being there. It can kill most Atlas builds, but afterwards I am normally to heavily damaged to really be of much more use. Even most mediums really seem to be able to put the hurt on me.
The build basically seems designed to swoop in once the enemies attention is tied up, and then tear them apart with it close range damage. Which doesn't really work if a Reaper is leading the charge.

Edit: Trying for a 9M with a 280 engine, 3LL, 1ML, 2xSRM4, 1SRM6. Should be nearly as damaging but might be fast enough to still be of use when grouped with a Reaper build.
