Welcome to the Sega Digital thread. Sega is increasingly focused on digital download, and rather than making a bunch of topics for $5 games, it'd be nicer to keep it in one thread that I update. Sega's strategy is to release DD content pretty consistently.
Currently, Digital Download is a major pillar of Sega's stratgy. They shut down Sega of America and opened Sega Digital in it's place, an entire division of the company dedicated to digital distribution games. They're the wing that handles all the stuff like the 3D Space Harrier remake, or Sonic CD, or Jet Set Radio. That sort of stuff.

Official Press Release:
SEGA AND DISNEY INTERACTIVE ANNOUNCE CASTLE OF ILLUSION FEATURING MICKEY MOUSE
Iconic SEGA Genesis Title Returns to Consoles in Summer 2013
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO– 15th April, 2013 –SEGA® Europe Ltd., and SEGA® of America, Inc. in collaboration with Disney Interactive today announced the upcoming digital release of Castle of Illusion staring Mickey Mouse™, a complete re-imagining of the iconic Mega Drive/Genesis side-scrolling adventure first released in 1990. Developed by Sega Studios Australia, Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will be available worldwide for digital download on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for Xbox 360®, PlayStation®Network and Windows PC in summer 2013.
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse first debuted on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990 to critical acclaim. Excellent controls, music, and graphics helped to bring the magic of Disney to millions of SEGA fans around the world. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will continue this tradition. Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Castle of Illusion has stunning visuals and new gameplay mechanics. Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.
“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a SEGA classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation,” said Chris Olson, vice president of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.”
Unannounced in the PR - members of the original Castle of Illusion team have been rehired by Sega to work on this remake.
UPDATE 04/12/2013: Sega has released a castle of illusion teaser showing off the castle, some marching soldiers, mizrabel, and the apples used in the Genesis port as a primary weapon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCDm48hbH0E
Seems to confirm that this is a remake of the genesis version, not the SMS version (since that one used marbles). As well, this should still be awesome.UPDATE 04/04/2013: Remember that Castle of Illusion collection I talked about a while back? Well it just got a hell of a lot more interesting...
UPDATE 03/26/2013: Sonic the Hedgehog Remastered has been announced. It's a full remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 running at 60 FPS with various modes and additions. It is using the Retro Engine that powered Sonic CD. Android and iOS announced thus far, but you better believe it's coming to everything Sonic CD came to.UPDATE 03/19/2013: Super Hang-On 3D, which was previous released on the Sony Playstation 3, has been announced for the Nintendo 3DS for 600 Yen. Additionally, 2 more unannounced Sega 3D Classics are being teased. Here's hoping for Outrun 3D and Afterburner 3D!UPDATE 01/23/2013: Probably the best place to discuss this, but Sega has purchased Relic from THQ, making them the unquestioned RTS king and a serious player in the PC game. If you've doubted Sega's commitment to Digital Distribution, you should probably start paying attention right about now.UPDATE 01/10/2013: HELL YEAH, Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed is finally available for preorder on steam for only $27![/]
Launches January 31st
But even better is this GMG deal: http://blog.greenmangaming.com/2013/01/25-prepurchase-voucher.html
Steam voucher pre-order for $20!
UPDATE 11/27/2012: Model 2 collection for the PS3 drops, Xbox 360 release tomorrow
The model 2 collection announced a while back has finally landed, at $5 a pop. The following are available:
-Virtua Fighter 2
-Fighting Vipers
-Sonic the Fighters
-Virtual On
-Virtua Striker
These are enhanced ports from the arcade originals (the saturn versions were a bit different) and run at 1080p in 4:3 resolution. Due to various geometry bugs, the port team wasn't able to expand the view out to 16:9 like they could with Daytona USA.
These ports feature extras not included in home or arcade port versions. The teleporting Jeffery bug from VF2.0, for example, can be enabled at will (or disabled). Sonic the Fighters has characters that weren't playable in the original, namely Metal Sonic and Robotnik. Both of those characters were completed and still in the game, but couldn't be unlocked and thus were only selectable via hacking. Honey, from Fighting Vipers, was also in the ROM for Sonic the Fighters, but unlike Metal Sonic and Robotnik, she was not complete or playable. All 3 characters are now fully complete and selectable.
Virtua Fighter 2 for $5 is a fucking steal. That is one of the greatest Sega games of all time, and it's still a hell of a lot of fun to play. All the titles feature ONLINE PLAY.
UPDATE 11/21/2012: 3D Space Harrier for the 3DS, Space Harrier II Complete Collection for Japanese PS3 announced
holy shit:
http://www.gamer.ne.jp/news/201211210023/
This is the arcade Space Harrier, remade in 3D, for the 3DS, as opposed to Space Harrier 3D, the 3D SMS-exclusive sequel.
It also appears that the Space Harrier PS2 collection is coming to PSN in japan, which probably means a Space Harrier Vintage collection coming to the US. The Space Harrier Sega Ages collection contained every space harrier game made, from the arcade original to the Game Gear and SMS ports and sequels, along with the Genesis sequel. I could see a few of those titles being trimmed, like the GG version of Space Harrier. I could also see 3D space harrier coming to the PS3 or 360 as part of the collection, like how Super Hang-On was in 3D on the PS3.
Posts
Space Harrier 3D is one of the best SMS titles on the entire system, and a massive step up from the original SMS port. It's a great game that most pass up because A) It's an SMS game and You need 3D glasses to play it.
Superb music too.
Awesome that it is a fixed up version. My current go to version is the Wii's VC Arcade version of awesomeness.
It actually has a 2D mode built in, like several Sega Scope 3D titles. But accessing it is annoying - you need to play long enough to get a high score, then, using controller 2, enter your name as "three." You'll open an options menu to turn on and off the 3D effect.
Outrun 3D had a similar menu, but you reached it by just pressing pause on the title screen, like Zaxxon 3D. I think the only title to not offer a 2D mode was Maze Hunter 3D.
It wasn't even in the manual! I learned about it on some BBS way back in the day. SMS manuals usually had a section called Ask the Pros where they would discuss codes "the sega masters" had hidden in the game... but not in Space Harrier 3D. Frustrating. It also had a continue code, which made the game much more manageable.
Space Harrier will always hold a special place in my heart as the definition of my early-life arcade-going experiences. That music, that gameplay, that addictive quality - I loved it so much, and when Shenmue let me play as much as I wanted I was hooked again. Definitely keeping an eye on this one.
I traded my 3DS in two moths ago. Wasn't playing anything on it. It was a glorified Netflix machine.
I am a sad panda.

The best game on sale is Virtua Fighter 5 FS Complete at $20, which normally goes for $50. Beyond that, pretty much most of their recent games are discounted.
As for Virtual ON, didn't that get released a while back?

Tilting cabinet effects!
But Green Man Gaming has a steam pre-order voucher for $20!
http://blog.greenmangaming.com/2013/01/25-prepurchase-voucher.html
I can't find anything on google about it and the Steam page doesn't mention anything about requiring an internet connection.
Edit: I turned my modem off while playing to see what would happen. The message popped up again, but when I hit ok it just let me keep playing. Weird.
It's related to leader boards. The message isn't clear - it should say you need an internet connection to access full leader board features, but it's not actually required to play. Like you said, just dismiss the error and keep playing.
Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, and Wii U
EDIT: Because I realize the naming convention might not be obvious - Castle of Illusion is a part of a series in Japan called "I Love Mickey Mouse." I love Mickey Mouse is a series of 3 games developed and released by Sega in the early 90's. 3 games were made - I love Mickey Mouse, I love Donald Duck, and I love Mickey and Donald. They were the first disney games Sega had made.
They came to the US under a different title. I love Mickey Mouse became this:
I love Donald Duck became this:
And I love Mickey and Donald became this:
All 3 were better than Capcom's own admittedly awesome Mickey Mouse line of games. Years later, the games would be packaged as the SEGA AGES I love Mickey Mouse collection on the Sega Saturn. They are some of the best platformers ever made.
The I love Mickey Mouse series also spawned an 8-bit sequel series on the Sega Master System.
I love Mickey Mouse got an 8-bit port that is as similar to the Genesis version as the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog is to the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog - which is to say it's an entirely different, and equally as excellent game:
I'm of the opinion that this version is actually the best game in the entire series, and superior to its Genesis big brother.
I love Donald Duck also got a line of sequels on the 8-bit line of Sega machines:
The 8-bit version of I love Mickey Mouse also spawned 2 8-bit sequels:
Land of Illusion is also a strong contender for best in the series.
Legend of Illusion is largely believed to be the worst game in the series, and it was only released on the Sega Master System in Brazil, making it an extremely rare game.
This would be the first time these games have been rereleased in 15 years. Due to the legal mess of licensing rights involving Sega and Disney, it's widely been assumed that these games would never be re-released again. That this is happening is a small miracle. Sega showing up to show Warren Spector how it's done.
This is great news, I had two of the Genesis games as a kid, definitely will be picking this up, always wanted to try Quackshot
No Steam/PC release though?
Luckily, the PS3 is slick enough to support HID USB controllers, so I play everything in the Sega Heritage line with this motherfucker:
Castle of Illusion Genesis
Castle of Illusion Sega Master System
Land of Illusion Sega Master System
Quackshot would also fit right in, but the 8-bit version of Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion are nearly universally considered the apex of the entire series by those who have played them all. I'd like for the 8-bit version of Castle of Illusion to be included primarily because it's been ridiculously overlooked for going on 24 years now, and it's shocking to watch a master system game upstage a genesis title in just about every way. It has a more charming art style, catchier music (despite being based on the same source material), much better gameplay, and better level progression. It's easily one of the ten best 8-bit games of all time IMO, regardless of system. A true lost Sega classic.
I'm not so hot on Land of Illusion - it's excellent, but probably because I played it so many years after I had already played Castle of Illusion, it wasn't as mindblowing. It's pretty much to Castle of Illusion what Sonic 2 was to Sonic 1.
I'd love for these games to finally get some proper recognition. Sega seems to understand that a good part of the appeal of their heritage collection is a mix of obscure and high quality ports. Every collection has followed the same sort of formula - a marquee lost treasure surrounded by timeless classics. The Wonderboy Collection particularly spoiled us - we got the first ever US release of both the Arcade version of Monster Land AND Monster World IV, in addition to a great port of Wonderboy in Monster World, too. Letting the 8-bit Illusion games finally get their time to shine would fit right in with this model.
OH, and just to make sure: M2 is handling the ports yet again. They've handled every Sega Heritage release, save for the AM2 ports (which have their own internal team in Sega dedicated to them).

Add me!
Quackshot was one of the very first Sega Genesis games I got, after Sonic the Hedgehog, Columns, and Thunder Force III. It was drop dead gorgeous back in the day - even now it's still quite a looker. Those early Genesis games were such a huge step above everything that came before them. I particularly love that game's palette, because it's the sort of palette not often seen in a Genesis game. It has a pastel look to it, with a lot of wonderful use of baby blue and sherbert orange in compliment of each other.
The team that made these games is one of the most legendary at Sega, right up there with Sonic Team and AM2. Originally known as AM7, they rose to prominence as Team Shinobi. They have been, for virtually all of their existence, one of Sega's top development teams. Aside from the obvious Shinobi games, they're also the team that made the Altered Beast, original Phantasy Star series (including PSIV), Streets of Rage, and Clockwork Knight. In 1998, they changed their name to Amusement Vision, where they made games like Planet Harriers and Super Monkey Ball. Their crowning achievement from that era is probably F-Zero GX.
In recent years, they merged with Smilebit (Jet Set Radio, Gun Valkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta) and are currently known as Team Yakuza, where they've made (obviously) the Yakuza series and Binary Domain.
Absolutely stellar studio with an outstanding history.
Well, no, technically "Sega showing up to show Warren Spector how it's done" would involve Sega developing brand new 3D platformers instead of just porting two-decade old titles, to be fair.

Uh, no, those two-decade old titles are still how it's done. They're still the standard.
The person I've been talking to about this deal. Sega and Disney have been negotiating for this since before Spector came to disney and epic mickey was announced. Sega wanted to release the two illusion games early in the Wii VC's life.
Power of Illusion also represents a failed attempt at getting Sega back on to develop for the series.

This. So much this.
Is there a source for this? I'm only asking because I might go ahead and report on it later, if I get the chance.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Quackshot or Land of Illusion will be left out, because Sega can't help themselves but add in a dash of crazy to spoil a perfect collection (Dragon's Trap missing, S3&K missing from that Genesis collection).
Because I want that again so I can finally beat that 3D staircase that I never got past.
Oh, and give me ducktales. And a MM9 style retro sequel!
Also I would totally jump on Space Harrier 3DS the second it was announced for localization.
Mickey Mania - great game. Moose chase was a bitch though.
