Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, yay or nay?

I just saw Dark Messiah of Might and Magic cheap at Target, and I had heard some yay/nay things about it. What is general opinion of it here on the board? Does anybody still play multiplayer? All thoughts are welcome and helpful.

Its £14.99 here in the UK.

At that price in my opinion an absolute steal.

You should probably get it. It is good. Dont expect like second coming of christ or Oblivion quality, but the combat is pure fun.

Yeah, it's only $12.98 (US) for it here, at that price, as long as it's not absolute crap (I still wouldn't buy Enter the Matrix at this price) it should be worth it.

The game is a lot of fun. It is just a more developed hack and slash, but I've not seen a game with more visceral and satisfying first-person melee combat and the sheer number of ways to dispose of your enemies as in Dark Messiah. It's not Oblivion, but it never really tries to be, even though at launch that's what everyone seemed to try to compare it to.

As for multiplayer, I checked its servers yesterday and while there were a ton of official servers, there were only three or four servers with actual people in them.

The game is all about combat, and it does it better than any other game in it's genre. Yay.

You should check online to make sure you'll actually be able to play the game. Certain video cards simply crash at the load screen after the intro tutorial. The setup I have that is incompatible with the game is Vista 32-bit and nvidia 8800 gts. Many other 8800 GTS users report the same poeple.

this game is AWSOME, its really amazing and well told story. Italacized for being predictable and dry, but good presentation. The gameplay is pure gold. Only 2 qualms, short and horrible ending, yes all four of them (no climax or anything). the multiplayer is decent, but i found there was too much lag.

It's really fun, I picked it up at target on clearance for $12.50 not bad considering its like 30-40 everywhere else. Don't expect a deep gaming experience, it's just like a first person hack & slash.

Ditto, the game is awesome. Just make sure you read up on how to get rid of the sound skips if that problem plagues you.

    Too true.

I wish Oblivion had a Dark Messiah combat style, it might have held my attention. D:

I really should pick this up, the demo was amazing and I've been really wanting to play through this game using the kick as much as possible. That and freezing the ground and having guys slip over cliffs/into fires/spikes. That never got old.

The single player is very fun and pretty awesome. The mulitplayer is a mess (it's my understanding it was done by different people). It's completely unoptimized so good luck getting it to run (by contrast, the single player ran perfectly).

For that price it's worth it for the awesome single player though.

    Another week another DM thread.
Mutiplayer, if you can get it to work, is brilliant. I was dropping to 10FPS in Multiplayer, turned off Hi-Res Models and started climbing back to 30-40. Couldn't even notice a change in the textures, models. Shrug.

The combat, while somewhat repetitive, is a lot of fun. On that basis alone the game is worth picking up if you can get it for, oh, $30 or less.

The story and characters are all pretty derivative and uninteresting, but the pure fun-factor of smashing things in full ragdoll glory make Dark Messiah a good time.

Great game, I fully recommend it, especially at that cheap a price. My only tip is to keep all of the weapons with special properties that you're given. There's a use for each and every one of them, even though the weaknesses sometimes don't make sense or aren't obvious.

Did you manage to find the dragon weapons that do like +18 damage versus undead. Because at the end of the game I felt like death incarnate and it was awesome.

The life-steal weapons kicks ass against undead too. I used that and the daggers pretty much exclusively in the last few levels.

Edit: I could never use the +18 sword because I chose evil alignment.

I know, sort of a reverse Final Fantasy-esque cure on the undead?

The sword can be found in one of the dungeons during the game. Also undead sort of implies that they do have life. UNdead

I'm having fun with it. The melee combat is really satisfying. I want to try a playthrough sometime without using weapons or magic, just chucking barrels and kicking enemies into spikes and fires.

Well, I have since reformated since my earlier woes with installing/running the demo. IF it works properly, I will buy it. Unfortunately, Target is sold out, so I guess Steam is my only choice.

I never had a problem with Steam before. I think it was just a lack of external options.
