WTB: Laptop for my dad

NateVaderNateVader Registered User regular
Apologies if this isn't the appropriate venue but I didn't see anything else.

We're looking to buy my dad a laptop for Christmas. The only guidelines I have is between $500-700 and he wants a Dell. If there are vastly superior products in that range I'm more than open to suggestions, but if Dell has some laptops that are worthy that would be best.

He'd be using it primarily just for internet, email and maybe the occasional Word or Excel file. He doesn't do any gaming (as far as I know), no video editing and only stores photos, he doesn't edit them or anything fancy.

A laptop that will last a good long while would also be a plus. They tend to hold on to their computers til the bitter end.

Thanks all!

If you have a CostCo membership, their Dells tend to have a little extra buns* like full Office or slightly better specs. Plus the warranty.

    *I'm leaving it.

do yourself a favor and buy your parents something that's designed with durability in mind... a thinkpad or a macbook are great choices that will last a really long time (a decade - honestly)

you can often find a one or the other (refurbished but with a warranty) on woot within your budget. today they happen to have a thinkpad.

in my experience a used/refurbished $1500 laptop (that now costs $500) lasts a lot longer and is much more pleasant to use than something that costs $500 new.

that, or an iPad + keyboard
