Favourite Holiday Movies/Shows/Shorts

saint2esaint2e Registered User regular
Hey all,

Normally I don't like to start threads in SE++. It's kind of intimidating. But I just enjoyed a night of watching a bunch of Christmas DVD's and felt the urge to start a thread on our favourite holiday shows.

I don't mean to compile an exhaustive list, there are plenty of those out there, but I was hoping to focus more on the ones you remember from your childhood. I'm 33, so I have memories of the old Rankin-Bass shows like "Twas the night before Christmas", and of course their classic stop-motion Rudolph, and animated Frosty the Snowman, which are absolute classics.

But my favourite of all, for some reason, is Disney's "Pluto's Christmas Tree". It's about 7 minutes long, but it just doesn't seem to be the Holiday season until I've watched it. I'm sure there are other movies/shows/animated shorts out there that I've forgotten about that I would love to re-watch, so I thought a good discussion here would trigger some memories.

So I ask you, SE++... What Holiday shows do you love to watch each and every year?

    A Christmas Story.

It's not a terribly original opinion, but I fucking love that movie and watch it every single year.

@Cilla Black: my wife's Uncle is a Volunteer Firefighter in Chippawa, where the Fire Truck from that movie is housed. He takes the Fire Truck down to the town it was filmed in almost every year. A Christmas Story is huge in her family.

I just found one of my favourite shorts on youtube:

    Classic.

Lately, i've been watching tons of made for tv christmas-themed movies on lifetime and hallmark channel. My favorite so far was A Bride for Christmas, where a dude makes a bet that he gets a random girl to say yes to a marriage proposal, only she's left 3 previous dudes at the altar, a mix between she's all that, how to lose a guy in ten days, and runaway bride. I also watched two different movies about the kids of Santa searching for true love, Annie Claus is coming to town and The Merry-in-Laws, picture elf minus the whimsy and humor. Then there was another about a single psychologist who treats a guy who thinks he's Santa, but love is whats waiting for her under the tree (with psycho santa). And another starring summer glau about a magic elf helping her find love (spoiler: she does). I need to stop probably

I like the one where some American lady meets a guy from British aristocracy. A Princess For Christmas or something?

The Ref and A Christmas Story, back to back
one's a heart-warming nostalgic recollection of the perfect christmas from childhood
the other is about the reality of holidays with family and how much you want to fucking kill them

My wife got me the Fraggle Rock Christmas DVD last year. I had totally forgotten about it. Another good one for me is the Jim Henson Christmas Special where they all go to Fozzie's Mom's place for Christmas.

I remember being awed that the Sesame Street gang AND the Muppet Show gang were in the same space. And they even had a run-in with the Fraggles! I was big on crossovers as a kid.

    That one was pretty good!

I approve of any tv movie involving british royalty, Like the one where the British duke guy has amnesia and the precocious daughter takes him home to her lonely single mom who works too much and has no time for love

My favorite christmas movie isn't really a christmas movie.

When I was in the military, I was unable to get leave for the holidays. So two friends and I had a little gift exchange and we got together on christmas morning. We had a great time even though we weren't with our families, but one friend pops in a DVD which turns out to be probably the best christmas movie of all time: Bubba Ho Tep

No lie, my parents would listen to "Dave's Not Here" every Christmas Eve as we drove home from Red Lobster

We go to Red Lobster because, when I was a toddler, my parents asked me to name the fanciest restaurant I could think of, and that was my reply

Die Hard was going to be my smartass answer.

In all honesty though I love It's A Wonderful Life, and I echo every recommendation of the Muppets Christmas Carol.
