I Had a Secret Santa Ship to the Wrong Address

Double_ChrisDouble_Chris Registered User regular
So, I am signed up on the Reddit Gifts Secret Santa exchange. I got a notice that my SS had shipped my gift and was tracking it online, when I realized it was going in the wrong direction.

See, a couple of months ago I was living in Washington, and am now living in Missouri. I forgot to change the shipping information on that site, so he sent it to Washington. Now, my old roommates still live at that address, so I know I can trust them to re-send it to me if it were to be delivered while they were home.

However, on the USPS website, it says they attempted delivery already and left a notice. Now, what do I do at this point? Will USPS attempt to re-deliver it? If my friends go down to the USPS office with the notice, will they be able to pick up my package? I really need help here, I don't want this to get lost.

I believe they'll attempt it a couple of times. Fedex did for me anyways. 3 to be exact, not sure on the specifics of USPS though. I don't think your friend can pick it up from the office without an ID but you might be able to call and talk with them to see what can be done. Probably involving a fax or something if they would even allow it. Worst comes to worst, they send it back to who shipped it and you can ask them to re-ship it to your current address.

Edit - Sorry, I used Fedex not UPS, anyways to pick it up from the office I believe you need ID of the person it is addressed to.

I've picked up packages meant for other people living at my address before, IIRC there's a spot on the paper that they send you that you can sign, but obviously that doesn't help you in this case.

You might be able to fax/email your friends a copy of a signed letter and a photocopy of your ID that says that it's okay for X person to pick up your package, seeing as they live at the same address that the package is being delivered to. If it gets to the point where it needs to be picked up it should say which post office it's at and you can always call them to ask what your options are. They will probably try to redeliver though, have you called your old roommates and asked them what the notice said?

I let them know that the package was going to them, but I didn't think to ask if they actually got the notice or what it said.

This page will let you request a redeliver or hold at the office. There's a note for info - you can type in roommate's name to see if that helps. Should be fine if they have an ID with that address.
