Carpet Nightmares

We are in the process of moving out of our house, and the thing is going up for sale and needs to be nearly show-ready by Saturday afternoon. One of the big things we need to do is clean the carpets.

We have two cats, but they really are not carpet pee-ers, thank God. So aside from the occasional hairball behind the couch we've missed and enough cat hair under the furniture to build several more cats their impact on the cleanliness of the carpets in the house has probably been relatively minimal. We have a pretty good vacuum cleaner, so the hair is coming up without too much issue.

The thing is, there are some of the usual stains you get on carpets.. tracked dirt, one or two clumsy spills... and in one room, apparently one of us spilled coffee somehow and didn't notice? Maybe it was a cat. I don't even know, I don't remember and I'm not sure I saw it happen, but one way or another we moved a couple things that were next to our desk and there is this big dark stain. I'm pretty sure it must have been coffee or similar, from the look of it.

My question is, with these things in mind, which is better to use: a steam cleaner or carpet shampooer? Is it worth it to hedge our bets and do one then the other? We are going to rent things probably on Friday, but one way or another we really can't afford to replace all the carpeting so we just have to make it look much, much better really quickly... especially in that one room. The rest of the house would probably do fine with whatever is cheaper, but that one spot needs the nuclear option and I'm just not sure what that is.

Thoughts? I really, really want to sell this damn thing so I can stop paying utilities.

edit: Also, any tips on furniture indentations? Will whatever we get to deal with the cleaning be enough to take care of those? I know you're not supposed to do the ice thing.

Things I've been reading say that shampooing is better for stains but steam cleaning is better in every other way so maybe I should do the steam cleaning and see if that one spot needs shampoo?

Yep. Shampoo is better for nasty stains, and can generally be done in spots, if you don't want to shampoo the whole place.

Steam cleaning is much better for deep cleaning, and will basically get everything out of the carpet.

If you do both, shampoo first. The steam cleaning will get up residue from the shampoo.

I was thinking of just hiring someone, but the prices I'm finding are way too much. So rental it will be.

Right now I'm thinking about renting a shampooer, doing that Friday, and then Saturday going for steam. I think they'll need the shampoo, but I don't think that sticky carpets will feel very nice to potential buyers.

I'd accelerate your plans. You don't want to walk on carpet for about 12 hours after steaming it because it's wet and will instantly turn any small amount of dirt on shoes into ugly mud stains (if you need to get about the house, go barefoot with clean feet). You can shampoo with a steamer too, so just rent that on Friday and do all of it at once. Here is a link to the eHow on how to do it: http://www.ehow.com/how_3153_deep-clean-carpet.html

Yup, generally local grocery stores will rent these for like $15 per day. Think the cheapest I've found someone would be willing to do it for me was $200 for a whole house.

When I moved into my house the carpets hadn't been cleaned, found a guy that did it for $50 and it got rid of the smoke smell entirely.

have you tried any stain cleaners? i remember oxiclean working really well on stubborn pet stains, i imagine it would get coffee (or whatever) up as well.

A friend is loaning us some cleaning supplies tonight, I'll ask about the oxyclean. I've never used it for this, but it may help.

i have found that renting from home depot is a better option assuming your home depot has the rentals. you get a bigger more powerful unit and it is the same if not cheaper cost wise

Oxyclean is washing soda (soda ash) so you might be able to score some cheap versions at pool supply stores. Not that you'll need a gallon drum for the same price, but it's a handy product to have! It's basically cooked baking soda.

    Sodium Bicarb->(cooked) -> Sodium Carb

It also has a bit of Sodium percarbonate too.

But I am a frugal asshole so I do this shit and I thought someone here might be interested.

You should be ok if you pre-treat that one spot heavily. I would shampoo it by hand, work the shampoo into the carpet and try and get out what you can. Then steam clean. If that doesn't pick up the spot, go back over with shampoo and repeat.

You really should be able to get away with spot / hand shampooing and then steam cleaning, although if you are trying to sell it probably won't hurt to do the whole house with a shampooer and then go back with a steam cleaner. Your carpets will look cleaner and fresher because you've gone over it more times.

If you can find folex (http://www.amazon.com/Folex-Co-Instant-Carpet-Remover/dp/B000ILA3YY) it is magic and nothing else works like it, it's ridiculous. I've used it to get blood, vomit, dog urine, wine and other stains out that steam cleaners and carpet shampoo wouldn't touch.

Yeah seriously, Folex is amazing. I mean the whole shampooing business will probably work, maybe, but really, Folex kills every stain ever. It is glorious.

Skip the shampoo and the other carpet cleaners until the stains are mostly handled.

Go get some Nature's Miracle from your local pet shop. It is an enzyme based cleaner designed to deal with pet satins (hairballs to pee) but ALSO essentially destroys coffee, or any other organic stain quickly and with just a little blotting.

Then, after your stains are dealt with, rent a cheap steamer from a hardware store for general cleaning.

I have indeed heard good things about Nature's Miracle, too! I just don't have personal experience with it.

Honestly, ceres, carpet shampooers are mostly a waste of money; a steam cleaner will get anything that a shampooer would've, and then some. The only benefit to a shampooing is the nice smell it'll leave for about a day or so (when you shouldn't be walking on the carpets anyway).

I'll second Talios's recommendation: hand-wash the coffee stained spot with Folex, and then run a steam cleaner over the whole thing. If hand-washing won't get it out, a shampooing machine wouldn't have done any better.

I have removed stains that were years old and treated with dozens of other attempts with nature's miracle in a few seconds of blooting and a paper towel.

Pretty sure it's made from some sort of dark magic.

On the other hand, the money you'll spend on shampoo for the grocery store cleaners will put you close to the cost of a pro coming in, and you'll get better results with said pro.

...Which is why it's a good thing that, in my opinion, shampooing is a waste of money. :P

Rent a steam cleaner, use one of the stain removers recommended here to hand-treat the stain, use rented steam cleaner to deep clean the carpet. Should be smooth sailing after that (just remember to stay off of the steam cleaned carpet, like bean said, for a day).

Oh, and any impressions made by your furniture should be worked-out with the steam cleaning.

I will also throw a vote up for Nature's Miracle. Not only does it come in different flavors (Hard floor, carpets, general, etc) but my wife and I have been using it for almost a year. Aside from the scattered remains of destroyed toys, you almost can't tell we have 5 dogs and 2 cats.

  • witch_iewitch_ie Registered User regular
We recently had our carpet steam cleaned, but had them only focus on a few rooms and got it done for about $130. A few years ago, I spent around $400 on a carpet shampooer with the best reviews on Consumer Reports. It couldn't get the basic stains out that the steam cleaner did. Since time is an issue, I would suggest getting the rooms with stains in the steam cleaned and skipping the shampooer completely. We have cats who are not as nice to our carpets as yours and a combination of Miracle's Nature and Folex has worked for most stains, so if cost is a big issue, you can try those and take the remainder with you for future use.

I think we've been talked into spot cleaning with.. something, and then hitting the whole thing with steam. It wasn't a super hard sell in the end because of time, which we're behind on and none of this is getting started until tomorrow. Is Folex something I can find at a Home Depot or Lowes? We have a gift card for Home Depot sitting around so anything we can get from there is preferable at the moment. If not we might try for Nature's Miracle. Also, upon looking at the stains more carefully, they don't seem to have sunk in quite as deeply as I thought, so I'm a little more confident that spot cleaning will do it. My husband thinks it's more likely soda than coffee, and if it's soda it probably had sugar, and the sugar might really need the steam to break it up.

Any ideas for those massive furniture indents? Especially where the couches were for years, and the bed... they're pretty deep. I'm hoping the steam will be enough to pull them up, but vacuuming really isn't.

  • witch_iewitch_ie Registered User regular
We didn't move a lot of our furniture when we had our steam cleaning, but for the furniture we did move, I didn't see any indents afterwards. We usually still see it after vacuuming too.

  • The EnderThe Ender Registered User regular
Again, in theory, the steam cleaning should take out the indentations.

Steam cleaning is good for indents, and the oxyclean stuff is awesome, but you want to put it down kind of heavy.

Also you may want to check if your state has laws on rental carpets, where the homeowner needs to replace carpet between tenants and can't charge it against your deposit, you may want to check into that.

I think Lowe's is where we got ours, but according to Folex's site when you select Pennsylvania, it's available from both Home Depot AND Lowe's. So you're good on that!

I got a coupon for Lowes for changing my address, so I feel covered either way then! And it will likely come down to where we end up renting the machine from.

Although both stores' websites are being difficult about telling me what kind of equipment they have available. I'll have to call in the morning.

Nature's Miracle is about $7 at any pet store.

The stains are pretty much out save a couple that we're not too worried about, but the indents didn't come up which is a bit annoying. We may try ironing them as a friend advised, but honestly I'm not too worried about them either. They almost certainly look better than they did, and the GET OUT NOW push is mostly done. We have a few cleaning supplies to pick up tonight and we're out; if our realtor comes back and tells us to do something about them we'll worry about it later this week.

    Thanks guys.

Indents reset themselves after a good few hours or so, don't worry about them.

If your carpet is old enough that an indent stays until you steam it... you might need to replace it. But the buyer can do that and they'll probably just take a few grand off their offer.

Yeah; if the indents didn't come out with the steam cleaning, the carpet fibers may have been damaged by the furniture sitting on them for too long. It'll have to be replaced (unless the buyers don't give a shit, in which case, great!)
