Need recommendation on LED LCD monitors

HorusHorus Los AngelesRegistered User regular
My old LCDs are on life support and I think its time to upgrade to something bigger and better. I am looking at LED but I am unfamiliar in what specs I should look that benefit what I work a lot. I do a lot of school work/research, web development and graphics..... lets add gaming. I just want really crisp and clear screens that reduce eye fatigue if possible.

Please recommend me what specs to look at in LCDs to know the good from the bad.

If you can still find it at a good price, the Sony Playstation monitor. 240hz, and 3D; has two inputs for HDMI and one for component. 24", too. I bought this one last year and I love it.

I have a pair of Dell S2240m LED LCDs on my desk, IPS panels and they're really nice. This is work though, at home it's a u2412 but that might be pricey. Look at the Dell IPS LCDs, everyone i've reccomended them to really likes them.

    What does IPS mean?

usually means about an extra hundred bucks.

IPS - in-plane switching.... the liquid crystals are aligned horizontally instead of on an angle. This procress greatly increases vertical viewing angles. When coupled with the high brightness and contrast of the glaretype displays, color reproduction is almost perfect. Basically it becomes a 1/4" professional graphics flat CRT monitor.... which is why the display is primarily for those in professional graphics.

basically its one of the things that make monitors easy to look at from side angles instead of head on.

Also generally something like 90+% color accuracy and 16:10 instead of 16:9 resolutions.

I have one of the Apple cinema displays which use the same IPS panels as the Dells and it's great. Equivalent to an SSD in how it improved my computing experience. You'd probably have to crossfire/SLI something for multiple 27-30" screens, but I am much happier with one larger screen from a design and use standpoint.

I used to have a 27" Thunderbold display at work connected to a PC. It's a FANTASTIC monitor, but I hesitate to recommend it to PC users. I don't know if it happened to you, but I could never see my BIOS prompts/messages while booting up. I also needed an adapter for my video port.

Don't you need a thunderbolt connection to run the new cinema display? We're you using a switch? My mini DP ACD did not have those BiOS issues. In any event, I agree, which was why I was recommending dell IPS; should be same quality as the ACD.

If you are interested in something like the Apple Cinema Displays, or the Dells, then monoprice just put out a model that uses the same panel (same exact IPS lcd panel, from the same factory, it just didn't pass apple's 100% perfect inspection, so it will be nearly the same unless you inspect the thing pixel by pixel with a microscope) and doesn't have as good of a stand, or an on-screen display option menu, not as many inputs. People have been buying units like this off ebay straight from Korean companies for about a year now, and almost everyone loves them.

Yeah, i needed an addapter for the video connection. What kind of video feed did the old cinema display have?
