DSL up to 3mbps vs fiber optic 12 t 20 mbps

I am a first time poster here and wanted to give back some feedback to everyone, since I found this forum to be helpful in my own situation. I was looking for advice regarding a high speed internet connections DSL (Fairpoint) and fiber (Comcast).

I found a post from 2 years ago (March 2011) from DoctorArch listed below:

“Well, it's time to consider my options again regarding internet because Comcast likes to mug me, force me to open my wallet, smack me around, and tells me to like it.

My situation: Currently I use Comcast's 12 mbps connection connected to a wireless router. 3 computers in the house, of which at least two are connected to the internet at any given time. I certainly can call myself a "heavy internet user." Additionally, two cellphones also utilize wireless internet whilst in the house. I also regularly use an Xbox 360 to play games and stream Netflix (and I do usually get HD video, although, with my internet being Cable, it can bob up and down irregularly).

If I change to the only other available option in my area, DSL 3 mbps, will that be enough for my needs?”

This is similar to the situation I am in (1 computer, 1 laptop, 1 smart phone, wireless router PS3 on line gaming, have used Netflix in the past but not currently).

I have decided to make the leap away from the juggernaut, monopoly company in our area we know as Comcast which was costing me around $160 (and rising) a month for internet and cable TV with no premium channels, to Fairpoint internet/phone/Direct TV bundle for $101 a month.

My concern is the change in internet connection from Comcast's Premium package of up to 20 mbps to Fairpoint's Standard package of up to 3mbps (all I am able to get in my area). I hope it will support all that I use it for. Research I have done seems to indicate as long as I don't do online gaming and downloads I should be all set.

I will have this all up and running in a week and report back to everyone with my results. Again, I just wanted to share something back with all of you since I found your advice to be helpful. Hope this works out.

That seems fairly ridiculous to me. I have Comcast's "blast plus" internet and basic digital cable, and it's only costing me $95 a month. Are you sure you don't have some other services tacked on there?

3Mbps is fine for one heavy user at a time. The incidental use of the wireless phones (email, IMs) and light gaming at the same time won't stress the connection. You'll want to keep only one device streaming video/downloading large files at a time, and it sounds like you can keep it to that.

I'm unique. Just like everyone else.

Nope no other services and I don't even have Blast Plus, just Premium.

My connection runs around 3Mbps and it's on a wireless transmission. While I have an above average ping for online gaming due to the wireless latency I have no other issues in regards of speed. I can download from two computers up to a combined 900kbps on a terrible router while browsing and not see much of a hit. Just avoid downloads while gaming and you shouldn't have an issue.
