Editing/Compressing Video

For youtube!

I recorded something with fraps and it's over 3.5 GB at 1 minute 30 seconds. I've been looking through a lot of tutorial information and such but I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions or things to keep in mind (or even recommendations for software)

VirtualDub with x264vfw compression. It's what I use for my YouTube channel.

I more I learn about this stuff the wider and deeper this rabbit hole gets. At this point, It's just intimidating. I can't even figure out how to make virtualdub use this codec, and here this guy is talking about megui and AVS scripts and bitrates and augh.

    Windows Movie Maker

I dont think I understand. You're telling me to use windows movie maker for what? And if I'm using that, then what is virtual dub?

Isn't this supposed to be simple? I always assumed video editing went something like record, edit, upload, but now it looks like record, edit, compress, upload. Am I missing something?

If VirtualDub is too confusing, use Windows Movie Maker. And yes, it's supposed to be simple, and VirtualDub is pretty simple, but if you're having trouble, WMM is even simpler. You do need to compress before uploading because FRAPS records giant files.

I have virtual dub. And I have the codec source files. But I'm not really sure what to do with them.

In VirtualDub hit Ctrl + P and select the codec, then go to File > Save as AVI.

  • DirtyDirtyVagrantDirtyDirtyVagrant Registered User regular
Right. That's the whole issue. The codec doesn't appear in the list when I go to the compression menu (ctrl+p)

Usually that's because you installed the codec incorrectly. If you can't get it to work, XviD is another codec that's almost as good.

You say "source files" and that you don't know what to do with them, so I'm betting that's why you're having trouble (although I don't have experience with VirtualDub). Source files usually need to be compiled, which can be confusing for your average (and somewhat above-average) computer user. I personally always just find a pre-compiled installer if it exists. What if you download and run the codec installer from here instead? Same problem?

Yeah, all I have is this folder with a bunch of stuff in it. There's nothing to run.

I had actually already downloaded and ran the pre-compiled one, but it did nothing. I saw something on a forum post about having to run it from the command line, but I'm not sure about that.

e: Well that time it appears to have actually installed something. Still, it doesn't appear in the virtual dub menu of available codecs.

Augh I just do not understand how this works at all. I've tried every conceivable avenue to get this fucking thing into this codec selection menu thingy and it's just not happening.

You may need to restart the software?
