Alright I've joined the team. This brings back so many memories of SETI@Home, a bunch of friends and I used to be in a team together about 7 years ago or so. It was awesome. We'd spend all this time bragging about work units done. I'm going to see if I can get a few of my friends going on the Folding@Home, and maybe sign my PC up to.
SETI is cool and all, but I think this is a much better use for distributed computing, IMHO of course.

But we can make it a game! It could be fun! We'll base it on work units.... hmm... gotta work some sort of D20/Card based system in there. Oh this'll be a blast!
Guys...? Guys??
Hey, where are you all going? IT'LL BE FUN! PUNCH AND PIE! PUNCH AND PIIIIIIIIIE!
Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression there slurp. But it is for a good cause - kinda like child's play, but with number crunching.
That's not to say that you shouldn't support Child's Play. Do both - more to bribe St. Peter with when the revolution comes and we're the first up against the wall.

That entire post is hilarious with all those references, and it makes me want to start folding. I don't have a PS3 (they should make it a free live arcade download for the 360 -- not trying to dump on the PS3, just so that more people could fold more on more consoles). I should throw it on my 24/7 media server, if I can remember to tonight.
Edit: Oh, and has anyone done any comparisons to see how efficiently the PS3 folds compared to various PCs? Is it able to leverage the cell efficiently? Given how folding can be broken up across lots of work units, I wonder if the work units themselves can be divided across those 7 psuedo-core-hoojawatzits.

It is amazing how many numbers the PS3s are crunching. Here is the OS stats page:
OS Type Current TFLOPS* Active CPUs Total CPUs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 151 158615 1623857
Mac OS X/PowerPC 7 8717 95292
Mac OS X/Intel 7 2660 7128
Linux 35 24873 215528
GPU 40 676 2163
PLAYSTATION®3 102 3409 4338
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total 342 198950 1948306
Jesus. That's... kind of scary. I think we can say - in a console-bias free way that the above is pretty fucking impressive.
Yeah, Stanford states:
With about 10,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale.
It's a really cool program; distributed computing is awesome. Sony/Stanford need to add a few more bells and whistles to the GUI so that people will be interested in keeping it running. Maybe a leaderboard of top PS3 teams? Or the ability to show your teammates on the map, maybe with red dots?
Seriously, liking the 1.6 update so far, and I'm up for giving folding a blast later on when I go to bed - downloading Tekken 5: DR at the moment though. Finally.
I should note that according to the FAH site the PS3 (as well as ATI GPU) units are only suitable for certain kinds of data processing.
That said, it's still damn impressive.
The PS3 numbers are impressive, but the GPU numbers are really impressive, considering how few are running it. I hope they get it working for nVidia someday.
If I can remember my old account info, I'll sign up with the PA group. I used to fold quite a bit, but haven't lately.

So.... Does this mean that the Cell processor is actually very very good?
I must say, this is a great thing that Sony is doing, and Microsoft and Nintendo should follow suit. If all the consoles out there were churning away on Folding@Home whenever their CPU was idle, imagine how it could get done!
Anyway, I've joined the group and installed FAH on my work computer, and will put it on both the computers I have at home. I should have done this ages ago, it's such an ingenious method for doing large scale computations.
Has anyone has issues with the PC graphic version? It seems to be doing wonky things to my video card. Should I opt for the non-graphical one? I've had to disable it for now as it causes my computer to randomly reboot, crash video reliant software, or goof up my video settings.
I just wanted to post a quick congratulations to the Folding Arcadians team.
We've posted our first work units - you can see some statistics here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=54717
Congratulations to Xander51 - whoever you might be. If you wouldn't mind dropping me a PM, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. On that note: To everybody out there - yup, I work for a giant retailer and that means SWAG.
Starting with Xander51 Folding Arcadians will have some prizes for work units completed.

I've also got some cool stuff for our ps3arcadians out there (website is up, wiki is coming soon). So if you've got a PS3 and you're interested - you can add me on your PS3 as a friend (rogerwilco) or you can send me a PM here.
*a mighty thank you to Vicious_GSR for coming up with the original logo, which will be on display at the ps3arcadians wiki when it's up. Cheers!
Unlike SETI - these work units are huge - so it'll take a while on a Mac/PC - mine's been running for three days now. The PS3 can chop through them in about 8 hours - that's why we've got some people on the list (my work PC says it will be done sometime next week :-S )
It's really easy to have multiple machines under one user name - just pop in that user name. Simple Thanks for taking part!
I registered as PA_Lockecole, although it looks like I want have any units completed until sometime tomorrow. Ah well, still pretty cool. I always loved the idea behind distributed computing.
i just installed it for the first time..its using up 80%ish of my 3 ghz core 2 duos processor..and estimating 104 days to complete 1 WU...
Let it run for awhile, for some reason it says it will take forever for a little while, did that to me too, then went down to ~1.5 days after a few hours.

The X1900, like most graphics processors, is essentially just a giant, parallel floating-point unit. The Cell also does pretty well at floating point (at one stage in development, Sony was thinking about having the Cell do all the 3D stuff for the PS3, but they realized that wasn't feasable). Traditional CPUs aren't nearly as good at floating point calculation, but they handle fixed-point and out-of-order excecution much better than a GPU or similar chip can.
I'm fast approaching the age when the medical profession will start wanting to stick their fingers up my pooper, so if this folding@home project could potentially improve my chances of surviving having something found up there, then I'm all in baby!

Is that a bad sign?
Also, does anyone know if there's a way to get this to open on startup?
Dunno, I'm running the console version at work now, doing the same thing. It does have a startup option though, but it runs as a windows services, so it a bit different.
I just hit triangle and went to Identity - assigned myself to team 54717 (while it was running) and I was off to the races. At that point, you can hit triangle again, go to the stats section and go to team stats if you want to see how we're doing.

No advice here? I'd like to continue doing this, but not if it's going to jack up my computer.

If its giving you trouble just run the console version. I don't expect they tested every video card setup in the universe for this.

There's a game somewhere in this? With points, levelling up, and whatnot?
It's like Progress Quest, except it cures cancer?

Do we have a SETI@Home group or will I have to stick with the OverClockers?

So, there was mention of Punch and Pie?

Yeah, looks like it updates every 50,000 steps (every 1%) on the console version. Took me about 30 minutes to finish 1% at work.
