PS3 is currently generating 2.5x the amount of processing power the rest of clients are put together.
Eeesh.
EDIT: I'll get my PC on this soon.
Also, about a 360 client, I understand that the reason the PS3 is good is because of the Cell. However, if you look around you'll notice there's an ATI GPU client, which generates about 60x as much power as a standard PC CPU. There's hope for MS and cancer curing yet if MS pulls their thumb out of their ass!
Considering all the shit that's flying around about how Microsoft wouldn't let Bizarre release Geometry Wars for free and won't let Epic release new Gears content for free, they'd probably want you to pay for it. (I'm half joking and half not).
Just got my computer working on this whole folding buisness under the name Inquisitor. I think I have the basic one working, but I cant figure ou the ATI GPU one yet.
Edit: Apparently I dont have the right model of ATI card, so that would do it.
Fine, I'm in on this -- my dual-core laptop is up and going, per the console instructions on page 5. So, question: though configured exactly as instructed, and with different machine IDs, both cores are working on the same thing it seems. Should I be worried, or is the program smart enough to have them work on different parts, or something?
Edit: oh man, the goons are rank 9. We need to catch up, pronto!

From the Folding@Home FAQ:
I just finished a WU and now I got another for the same protein. Is there something wrong? No, most likely everything is fine. We're studying the dynamics of a few proteins, so you're likely to get the same protein to work on multiple times. Each WU gives us additional information about the dynamics of that protein, so it is important to us. Indeed, if we did only 1 WU per protein, we would not learn very much.
So how come some of us aren't on the team list on the folding@home team stats list? Do we get added after our first WU?
EDIT: If this question has been asked/answered I'm sorry - it's 4am and I'm going to be and not going to read through the thread Sweet dreams
Yes, you get added after you finish your first work unit.
Edit - Folding@home is showing thier combined processing power as 971 TFLOPS... (715 from PS3s!) getting very very close to PetaFLOP.
Completely random. I check to see who has completely work units, their name goes into a hat.
The names are then agitated gently inside said hat, then extracted in a scientific way involving a flourish and a lab coat. It seemed to be the most fair way of doing things

Hey, that's how L. Ron came up with Scientology!
On a side note, are there any possible ramifications from keeping a PS3 on almost constantly? It doesn't seem to get that hot, and I've got it in an open space secluded from any other sources of heat, but I do worry a touch.
I ask because I had the photo album viewer going yesterday for a few minutes, went to turn F@H back on, and noticed that the graphics went a bit wonky. Kinda looked like what happens when you overclock a GPU just a bit too much. Turned it off for the weekend, which is going to kill my cancer-curing contribution, but I'd rather have it working when I get back to contribute a few more WU's than for the display to be completely fucked.
PS3ers, make sure you turn off the controller while you're folding. I just found one of mine dead. Apparently they still use a good amount of juice just sitting there doing nothing...
Also why did you all make a seperate team? The official PA team (or, the un-official official..) it's up to 313 users now and about to crack the top 500...
On a related note, I think it's really neat to see the Cell processor at work, here. It's a really awesome piece of engineering, and this is the first application I've seen which really shows its stuff above and beyond what a standard processor can do. I'm not sure it was necessary to put it in a gaming console, but I've always admired the concept.
A rare kudo to Sony and their partners for some very cool technology and for teaming up with Stanford to get the client on there. It's honestly breathtaking to see how much more effective the Cell is at this than a normal, even dual-core processor, and the cause is quite worthy.

Well, went over it a few pages back - essentially I didn't search for the existing team, so it's my bad.
That being said, we're doing something a little different here. We're kicking off PS3arcadians.com (hopefully the wiki should be live later tonight after my host is finished transferring everything to a linux server) and we've got prizes. We put it to the group here and everyone seems content to have two teams.
As for un-official official - well, we're un-officially un-official! So there!
Just getting my PS3 online now (Yes I just bought one, and no I didn't get one just to fold :rotate:) I won't run it all the time like I do on my PC and Work computers, I don't trust the system not to overheat hehe, but I'm sure I'll crank out a WU now and again from it.
Too bad it can't run while you're watching a Blu-ray. I'm sure there's plenty of extra cycles, if I remember correctly, Sony said it only uses 2 SPEs to decode a HD stream in realtime.
What speeds are people getting out of their (non-PS3) machines? My iBook is going to take a couple weeks just to do one; I started when this thread began and am not quite 20% done . I feel so slow. The PS3 finishes one in about 8 hours, right, but how long do these usually take with an up-to-date computer (dual-core, 2-ish GHz, etc.)?

It takes my Athlon 3700+ about one and a half to two days to finish one if I don't do anything else (which usually isnt the case). My laptop and work computer both take around 50 hours per WU, but I forget the specs on those.
I started yesterday morning and had one finished at around 3 am or so this morning. But much of the day I'd left the computer on and hadn't touched it because I was out and about.

Now I can feel good about sitting on my ass. I'm helping.

While I am sure this isn't news to some of you, it's pretty much blowing my mind...
Someone always does.

It's awesome that all this PS3 news is getting more people on across the board.
I don't know how much it would help but the fact that so many people have one should count for somthing right?
Congratulations everyone! We're only 7 work units away from our next giveaway!!
Edit: Apparently I dont have the right model of ATI card, so that would do it.
I...I think I'm addicted to folding. This is my SETI problem coming back all over again, but for a good cause no less!

I am going to have to limit myself to folding@school.

Holy crap. the team is at 50 WU's now.

I am a freaking nerd.
Now I feel bad that because I play WoW I can't fight cancer.
I'm a...i'm a bad person.
21 users. 60 work units. In the top 8000.
In three days. Awesome job folks.
Edit: The draw for our 50th work unit will be held later today. It's sunny outside - I'm going running
how does this drawing work anyway, is it random or to the people with the most WUs

Yea I like the idea that we're the G&T Folding team. G&T people rule anyway

She must have been hired by Cancer.
How long is a WU taking on a PS3?
