If you loved....QTEs....you'll love Tomb Raider.

    Got it.

    But I do love QTEs

And RE4's use of them was rad as fuck

It was the original (except for Shenmue but fuck Shenmue)

that ign image is a visual metaphor for some marketing press kit's jizz

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
It's also a visual stimulant to evoke my jizz

If this game had been just a roller coaster ride like Uncharted 2, I mean, that's cool and all, but I don't find that kind of experience worth it in terms of extending the value of the game. Uncharted 2 showed you all its tricks on that first playthrough, and without those neat setpieces, it's kinda...nothing? As a first experience, it's unmatched, but I want something with a little more depth and replay value

So throwing up Metroid Prime and the Arkham games as a comparison is just...damn it, that is how you get me on board

I'm the crazy person that did all 400 riddles twice in Arkham City, the second time just for funsies with no Achievements to drive me toward it

But the worst parts of Uncharted were the QTEs. Remember in UC1 when you just die from a spike trap? You just die.

Wouldn't the survival aspect be significantly diminished if there were as many gruesome killings as Resident Evil 4, especially if you're killing people instead of parasite possessed zombies? Also, I hope they're able to adequately develop Lara Croft from a naive inexperienced person to a cold Terminator-like mass killer.

I'm guessing you haven't read many reviews yet?

    Prepare to be disappointed.

I didn't know there were that many reviews out but then most reviewers don't really care about those kinds of details. I never see reviewers complain about the utter ridiculousness of the stories in modern military shooters or the insane number of foreigners you have to mow down.

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
The reviews I've read seem to indicate that the turn to cold-blooded killer is pretty quick

It's a pretty big pet peeve of Yahtzees

Yes, but he does have valid points fairly often.

He definitely makes some good points but he often focus only on a small portion of the game.

  • KingofMadCowsKingofMadCows Registered User regular
Well, that is unfortunate. Although I'm sure that it's still a very fun game.

It would have been nice if they had taken a similar approach as Terminator 2 and The Sarah Connor Chronicles where even though it was a series about the apocalypse and mass murdering robots, they made a huge deal out of John and Sarah having to take human lives.

The gametrailers video review goes over the disconnect quite well. I think it's hilarious.

    Hahahaha perfect

Using that for my SE++ TR thread

That was my favorite part, couldn't stop laughing.

That was a surprisingly good review. Most gametrailer reviews I've seen don't talk about those kinds of things. The game must make a pretty big deal about Lara's reluctance to kill if the review dedicates so much time to the disconnect between gameplay and story.

i dunno nothing makes me care more about protecting a poor, vulnerable girl than having her do a +20 XP KILLER STEALTH AXE! into some poor sod's cranium.

I have to agree with the GiantBomb guys on this. The marketing/interview stuff preceding release of this game has just been terrible and is going to color people's perceptions far more than just playing the game would have.

Life or death, them or us situation. Yeah, after her first kill she should just break down and give up. Then the game would be perfect.

The whole 'you will want to protect her thing' is laughable. She's a fucking murder train with a ponytail. She'd be way more at home in AC3 than this.

I more want to be protected from her than anything. Luckily I'm not a generic mook with a machete so I should be okay.

The whole 'reluctant killer' thing is doomed the moment they give players the option to kill, though.
It's like in GTAIV where Niko complains that he wanted to leave the killing behind him and start a new life.
Yeah Niko, that may have sounded better if I hadn't taken you on a five-star rampage around the island this morning. Let's see, you mowed down those people buying hotdogs, rammed that car into the river, then headshot the cop driving the car chasing you. Now you're complaining because you killed a guy in self-defense?
Nathan Drake has killed around 1500 people across his games, and besides one line from one of the villains, no-one seems to think this is notable.
The only games where there isn't a disconnect between story and gameplay regarding deaths are ones where the protagonist is a sociopath. Saints Row, for example.

Woah woah woah.... Wait a minute

This game has a Metroidvania type thing going on too? Jesus Christ... I just obtained what I can only describe as a "super boner". Suddenly, Tuesday seems so far away.

I can't freaking wait for next Tuesday. After watching the Gametrailers review, I was 100% sold. Sure, the transition from reluctant killer to Murder Expert might be a bit jarring, but I mean, come on... we all want the shootouts, so it isn't like that's a big deal.

I for one love this murder happy Lara. I mean on an island full of crazies who want nothing more than to kill me, I think it's age to say most of us would probably kill just as much as she has to. And whilst it would need with our psyche, game developers and writers can't really linger on stuff like that too long in an action game.

So, you know, have fun walking into Gamestop to buy Tomb Raider with that thing pointing the way.

It definitely would have been nice if they had used a "Humanity" system or something, where Lara physically changes and cut scenes and such change depending on how you kill, and how many you kill. Give them different skill paths, where you can unlock both of them, but they become more or less effective based on your Humanity.

What you're suggesting sounds awesome. It would be more akin to the High Chaos vs Stealth gameplay of Dishonored. However, I don't know that taking Lara in a "dark" direction is really what they want to do. Especially since this is a prequel and we know she ends up alright.

I can't help but think that if they did what you're suggesting, that we wouldn't end up with some goth/emo character designs for Lara if they started altering her appearance to mimic how many dudes she has brutally murdered.

As long as she doesn't have a segment where she's hallucinating and encounters all of the people that she's killed... I think I'm okay with her being a 'reluctant killer' with a high body count. :P

Whoa, whoa, whoa... whoa. IGN basically just said that Tomb Raider is a mashup of RE4, Arkham City, Metroid Prime and Uncharted? Are you fucking serious? Wow. I will have to play this.

Is this a prequel? Because it sure as shit feels more like a reboot.
